The neurological manifestations and complications of the acute phase of COVID-19 are numerous. They mainly concern the central nervous system in the frequent forms of encephalopathy, encephalitis and neurovascular pathologies. Peripheral neurological manifestations mainly include acute polyneuropathies such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and intensive care neuromyopathies. Most of these manifestations were described during the first wave of the pandemic. The epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects are addressed in this general review of the literature published from 2020 to early 2023...

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective tool in HIV prevention but is rarely prescribed by primary care physicians. A survey conducted among 147 physicians to assess their knowledge and interest in prescribing PrEP shows that 97% stated they have already heard of PrEP, but their knowledge of its indications, dosage, price, and side-effects is often incomplete or incorrect. For 69% of them, the main obstacle to prescribing PrEP is the lack of training on the subject. However, 70% of physicians express interest in receiving training to confidently prescribe PrEP to their patients...

Due to increased dependency and health needs, the follow-up of the patients in nursing home (NH) by general practitioners (GP) is difficult, in a context of an aging population and declining medical density. This study sought to describe facilitating or limiting factors faced by GP in Drôme, Isère and Savoy in their NH patients' follow-up and to collect suggestions for improvement. A qualitative study, with phenomenological analysis, was identified factors linked to patients (complexity, specific needs, Doctor-patient relationship affected, ethical considerations), to physicians (to conjugate his office activity with visits and emergencies) and to NH (cooperation with information sharing amongst professional microcosm, their representations by GP)...

BACKGROUND: Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare autoimmune disorder due to autoantibodies against Factor VIII, with a high mortality risk. Treatments aim to control bleeding and eradicate antibodies by immunosuppression. International recommendations rely on registers and international expert panels. METHODS: CREHA, an open-label randomized trial, compared the efficacy and safety of cyclophosphamide and rituximab in association with steroids in patients with newly diagnosed AHA...

DIABETES TEATED IN GENERAL PRACTICE. Blood glucose monitoring has been an integral part of diabetes treatment for many years, whether for type 1 diabetic patients on multiple daily injections of insulin, insulin pumps or artificial pancreas, and now for patients with type 2 diabetes, even without intnsified insulin therapy. Capillary blood glucose testing with glucose meters, developed in the 80s, has been largely replaced by continuous glucose monitoring with subcutaneous sensors, which since the early 2000s have revolutionized diabetes management, understanding and day-to-day monitoring, for patients and healthcare profressionals alike...

METHODS: Serum or urine concentrations of iron metabolism-related parameters on intensive care unit admission were measured in a prospective cohort of 133 eligible patients with sepsis according to the Sepsis-3 criteria, and these values were compared between survivors and nonsurvivors, categorized according to their 60-day survival status...

INTRODUCTION: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disease characterized by low platelet counts and increased risk of bleeding. After corticosteroids with or without intravenous immune globulin (first-line treatment), second-line treatment options include rituximab, splenectomy, thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs), and fostamatinib. In Canada, the choice of second-line therapy is influenced by access to medications. The goals of this narrative review are to 1) summarize the evidence for the use of TPO-RAs and other second-line therapies in ITP and 2) highlight differences in public funding criteria for TPO-RAs across provinces and territories in Canada...

Health anxiety (HA) is a frequent problem (up to 20% of consultants in the context of secondary care) responsible for decreased well-being, disability, somatic and psychiatric complications, which contributes to high healthcare expenditures at the population level. It is likely, if not definitely established, that the prevalence of ACS is increasing, and this can partly be explained by the growing medicalization of society in general, the appetite of Media for health issues, and the uncontrolled use of the Internet (which can lead certain vulnerable subjects to cyberchondria)...

PURPOSE: In Canada, three out of 17 medical schools do not mandate an anesthesia rotation in their clerkship curriculum. Understanding the effects of a mandatory anesthesiology rotation is important in determining its value to the specialty and guiding decision-making for medical educators. We sought to determine whether a mandatory anesthesia rotation affected students' understanding of anesthesiology, as well as their perspectives on anesthesia. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous cross-sectional survey of Canadian medical students graduating in 2021...
