The Peterhof Collection of spontaneous meiotic mutants of rye was used as a model to study the genetic control of meiosis key events in an organism with a large genome. A combination of methods, which included fluorescence in situ DNA-DNA hybridization, sequencing of recombinogenic proteins, and immunocytochemical analysis of meiosis proteins, clearly showed that mutation sy1 affects recombination events, asynapsis in mutant sy9 is connected with defects of the assembly of synaptonemal complex axial cores, and that synapsis defects in mutant sy10 are coupled with the presence of protein Zyp1 in the core region...

Chemoprophylaxis represents a preventive antituberculotic treatment of persons at singificant risk of developing tuberculosis, in whom active tuberculosis is excluded The decision on treatment is based on detailed history about close contacts, tuberculin skin testing, data on BCG vaccination, and clinical examination. Conclusions are quite different depending on the fact if BCG vaccine is routinely applied (the case in developing countries, due to high tuberculosis incidence) or not--(in developed countries, where negative tuberkulin skin test is a normal finding), and tuberculin-positive persons are considered recently infected and undergo preventive therapy...

This paper examines the drugs used in Ludwig Binswanger's private sanatorium "Bellevue" in Kreuzlingen on the Lake of Constance between 1857 and 1870. The available patient records have revealed the administrated drugs, prescriptions have been transcribed, and the guidelines for the use of the drugs have been reconstructed by means of the literature. It becomes obvious that the armamentarium of drugs prescribed was limited and can be connected with the treatment of physical ailments which the "somatist" Binswanger considered as the main cause for psychic disorders...

In the diagnosis and treatment of acute scrotal pain and swelling it is important to differentiate between testicular torsion and epididymo-orchitis. A special case of a thirty-eight-year-old male asylant from Nepal was presented in the urological service with acute scrotal pain. To exclude testicular torsion, a diagnostic exploration of the scrotum was done with the findings of an acute funiculitis with abscess formation. Under surgical drainage of abscess together with medical treatment the acute inflammation disappeared...
