Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to spinal cord, which is categorized according to the extent of functional loss, sensation loss and inability of the subjects to stand and walk. The patients use two transportation systems including orthosis and wheelchair. It was claimed that standing and walking bring some benefits such as decreasing bone osteoporosis, prevention of pressure sores, and improvement of the function of the digestive system for SCI patients. Nevertheless, the question of wether or not there is enough evidence to support the effect of walking with orthosis on the health status of the subjects with SCI remains unanswered...

Zingerone, a major component found in ginger root, has been known as anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic activities that are often associated with its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. In recent studies, we examined molecular mechanism of zingerone treatment on pro-inflammatory NF-kappaB activation via the redox-related NIK/IKK and MAPK pathways. Action mechanism of zingerone on NF-kappaB signaling was investigated in aged rat kidney and endothelial cells. The results showed that zingerone had not only the antioxidant effect by constitutive suppression of ROS, but also anti-inflammatory effects by suppression of nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB activation in aged rat...

Background. Thanks to modern methods of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, we currently possess the means to counteract the consequences of osteoprosis and limit the number of falls in osteoporotic patients. Material and methods. Based on an original questionnaire, we analyzed a group of 54 patients (48 women and 6 men) under treatment for osteoporosis in order to assess the level of physical activity and the reasons for its reduction in patients with osteoporosis, to determine the situations mostly endangered by falls, and to survey the opinion of patients regarding the need for a rehabilitation program to prevent falls...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible relationship between bone mineral density and polymorphism of the estrogen receptor (ER) gene in Shanghai healthy postmenopausal women. METHODS: 250 unrelated healthy postmenopausal women were selected for bone mineral density (BMD) determination by Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and polymorphism of estrogen receptor gene analyses by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). RESULTS: Pvu II polymorphisms of ER gene was associated with low Troch BMD (P = 0...
