NUT carcinomas (NC) are rare and aggressive tumours characterized by chromosomal rearrangements of the gene encoding for nuclear protein of the testis (NUT) located on chromosome 15q14. This article presents a case of a 60-year-old woman diagnosed with NC presenting as a fast growing primary tumour in the right palate. Further evaluation revealed a tumour mass in the lungs and widespread metastases. A review of the literature did not reveal earlier cases presenting in the palate. In order to improve early diagnosis it is suggested to perform immunohistochemical testing for NUT in all poorly differentiated carcinomas without glandular differentiation arising in the chest, and head and neck (Clin Cancer Res, 18, 2012, 5773)...

BACKGROUND: The primary neuroendocrine skin cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), has a well-known predilection to metastasize systemically. However, the experience of systemic metastases in MCC is mainly disseminated through case reports due to the rarity of MCC. PURPOSE: To elucidate the frequency and locations of systemic metastasis in MCC by reviewing the imaging of patients with metastatic MCC in a national cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with diagnosed metastatic MCC by imaging studies in Finland during 1999-2012 were included in this study...

BACKGROUND: Skin metastases occur in 0.7% to 9% of all patients with cancer and are usually considered a late event in the evolution of most visceral carcinomas. The development of a nodular metastatic lesion on the nasal tip is known as clown nose sign. MAIN OBSERVATION: We report a 64-year-old man that developed a nodular lesion on his nasal tip as first manifestation of squamous lung carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The biopsy of the cutaneous metastasis may be helpful to histopathologically confirm the suspected primary tumour avoiding invasive diagnostic procedures...

RATIONALE: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which target mutated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), have been the first-line treatment of late-stage lung adenocarcinoma harboring EGFR mutation. EGFR mutations are mostly identified in lung adenocarcinoma. However, it is rarely seen in lung neuroendocrine carcinoma, and treatment strategies remain under reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we describe a 54-year-old Chinese man diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma (cT4N3M1b, stage IV) with neuroendocrine differentiation and L858R mutation on exon 21...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are endogenous short noncoding RNAs, can regulate genes involved in important biological and pathological functions. Therefore, dysregulation of miRNAs plays a critical role in cancer progression. However, whether the aberrant expression of miRNAs is regulated by oncogenes remains unclear. We previously demonstrated that a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain 9 (ADAM9) promotes lung metastasis by enhancing the expression of a pro-migratory protein, CUB domain containing protein 1 (CDCP1)...

Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) is well described in patients with brain metastases, presenting symptomatically in approximately 5% of patients. Conventionally, the presence of LMD is an indication for whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) and not suitable for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the local control and overall survival of patients who underwent SRS to focal LMD. We reviewed our prospective registry and identified 32 brain metastases patients with LMD, from a total of 465 patients who underwent SRS between 2013 and 2015...

Benign metastasizing leiomyomas (BMLs) are rare sequelae of common uterine leiomyomas and most frequently found in the lungs. Most cases of BMLs occur with a history of prior gynecologic procedures; however, none have yet been reported in association with uterine artery embolization (UAE). This case report highlights the disease course for a 48-yo female with a history of both myomectomy and UAE for uterine fibroids who presented later with bilateral pulmonary BMLs. Though the pathophysiology of BMLs is poorly understood and this case is confounded by prior myomectomy, it does bring into question whether UAE has a role in BML development...

Small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) is an uncommon tumor characterized by an aggressive behavior with early metastasis, usually to the contralateral lung, liver, brain, and bones. There are only five cases of this particular tumor metastasizing to the oral cavity described in the English literature. We present the case of metastatic SCLC in the mandible with radiographic findings resembling a residual cyst. A 66-year-old man with previous diagnosis and treatment for a SCLC was referred to the Stomatology Department with a history of persistent pain in the mandible 1 year after the inferior right pre-molar tooth extraction...

The patient was a 77-year-old female with a history of treatment for cancer of the right breast 27 years earlier, who presented with a chief complaint of a subcutaneous mass in the left lower quadrant of her abdomen. A thorough examination revealed high breast cancer-related tumor marker values, and based on a computed tomography(CT)examination, a tentative diagnosis of multiple lung, liver, retroperitoneal, and abdominal wall metastases was made. Although there were multiple organ metastases, in view of the long interval before the recurrence, absence of any symptoms, and the patient's age, we initiated treatment by weekly administration of an aromatase inhibitor and trastuzumab...

The ability of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells to invade and metastasize is associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The process of EMT is, at least in part, regulated by microRNAs. However, it is unknown whether microRNAs regulate EMT in cancer stem-like cells (CSLCs), or which microRNAs are involved. In the present study, we compared microRNA expression in A549 cells, TGF‑β1-treated A549 cells, CSLCs characterized by the CD133+/CD326+ phenotype, and TGF‑β1-treated CSLCs. We found that miR‑181b‑5p expression was upregulated by TGF‑β1...

PURPOSE: Gliomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), accounting for about one third of all brain tumors. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the aggressive grade IV glioma with survival as low as 2-5% in the second year post-diagnosis, hence necessitating efficient diagnostic markers. More than 50% of the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) brain metastases are solitary lesions, often difficult to differentiate from gliomas by conventional imaging diagnostics...

PURPOSE: RT-PCR technique has showed a promising value as pre-screening method for detection of mRNA containing abnormal ALK sequences, but its sensitivity and specificity is still discussable. Previously, we determined the incidence of ALK rearrangement in CNS metastases of NSCLC using IHC and FISH methods. MATERIALS: We evaluated ALK gene rearrangement using two-step RT-PCR method with EML4-ALK Fusion Gene Detection Kit (Entrogen, USA). The studied group included 145 patients (45 females, 100 males) with CNS metastases of NSCLC and was heterogeneous in terms of histology and smoking status...

Metastatic tumor is one of several etiologies of space-occupying masses in the orbit that accounts for 1-13% of all orbital masses. In the adult patient population, breast cancer is the most common tumor to metastasize to the orbit, followed by metastasis from the lung, prostate, and gastrointestinal tract. Carcinoid tumors are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms derived from enterochromaffin cells, which are found primarily in the gastrointestinal tract and bronchial tree. Liver metastases are the classic presentation of distant disease...
