Metastatic disease involving the thyroid gland is uncommon. Solitary thyroid metastases from various primary sites particularly kidney, lung, and breast had been previously described. To the best of our knowledge, metastases from two topographically separate primary malignancies to the thyroid have never been documented hitherto. This is the first reported case of cancer-to-cancer metastasis involving an invasive breast carcinoma metastasized within a metastatic renal cell carcinoma in the nonneoplastic thyroid in a 58-year-old woman...

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are neoplasms arising from dispersed neuroendocrine cells, localized to the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), lungs, adrenal medulla, and other sites. The term "carcinoid tumor" is usually limited to NETs of the lung and GIT. Ovarian carcinoids are uncommon, accounting for 0.1% of ovarian malignancies and 5% of all NETs. Primary ovarian tumors arise in pure form or as a component of teratomas, while ovarian NET metastases are predominantly from gastrointestinal primaries. To the best of our knowledge, there are only two previous reports of bronchopulmonary carcinoids (PCs) metastasizing to the ovaries...

OBJECTIVE Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is the primary modality for treating brain metastases. However, effective radiosurgical control of brain metastases ≥ 2 cm in maximum diameter remains challenging and is associated with suboptimal local control (LC) rates of 37%-62% and an increased risk of treatment-related toxicity. To enhance LC while limiting adverse effects (AEs) of radiation in these patients, a dose-dense treatment regimen using 2-staged SRS (2-SSRS) was used. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of this treatment strategy...

Performance of thoracoscopic pulmonary segmentectomy for primary lung cancer or pulmonary metastases has recently increased. In patients with emphysema, identification of the intersegmental line is often difficult. For nonpalpable lesions, securing a sufficient surgical margin is more likely to be uncertain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of intraoperative computed tomography (CT) scan during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) pulmonary segmentectomy. This study included 12 patients who underwent intraoperative CT-assisted VATS segmentectomy between January 2015 and August 2016...

LAG3 is a surface molecule found on a subset of immune cells. The precise function of LAG3 appears to be context-dependent. In this study, we investigated the effect of LAG3 on CD4(+)CD25(-) T cells from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. We found that in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of NSCLC patients, LAG3 was significantly increased in CD4(+) T cells directly ex vivo and primarily in the CD4(+)CD25(-) fraction, which was regulated by prolonged TCR stimulation and the presence of IL-27...

The lungs are the most common sites of metastases from non-pulmonary malignancies. On the other hand, endobronchial metastases are rare. Various tumors have been associated with endobronchial metastasis, most commonly renal, breast and colorectal cancer. Advanced rectal cancerwith lung metastasis is common. However, endobronchial metastasis without lung metastasis of rectal cancer is rare, and easily misdiagnosed. We report one case of postoperative rectal cancer with endobronchial, pleuralcavity, pericardial cavitymetastasis, giving the comprehensive treatment of bronchial stentimplantation, chemotherapy, targeted drugs and remission...

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the thyroid are rare. The most common primary cancer to metastasize to the thyroid is renal cell carcinoma, followed by malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and skin, with breast cancer metastases to the thyroid being rare. Overall, the outcomes in malignancies that have metastasized to the thyroid are poor. There are no prospective studies addressing the role of surgery in metastatic disease of the thyroid. Isolated thyroidectomy has been proposed as a local disease control option to palliate and prevent the potential morbidity of tumor extension related to the airway...

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the elective treatment for cervical relapse from differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) but it is technically challenging, with risk of failure and morbidity. We explored the feasibility and the efficacy of Radioguided Occult Lesion Localization (ROLL) with intratumoral 99mTc radiolabeled human albumin macroaggregates ([99mTc]MAA) injection in this setting. METHODS: Fifteen patients who underwent ROLL by ultrasonography (US)-guided intratumoral injection of [99mTc]MAA between December 2013 and October 2016 for DTC recurrence were considered for this study...

The present case underwent right laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for collecting duct carcinoma (CDC). Recurrence occurred in the lung and the bone (skull and lumber vertebra) in 2011. Gemcitabine plus cisplatin (GC) chemotherapy and monthly zoledronic acid (ZA) was then started. The massive skull bone metastases were prominently reossified after several courses of the therapy. The patient received 16 courses of GC chemotherapy and monthly ZA, and pulmonary metastases and reossified skull bone metastases were stable for 23 months...

Pulmonary metastasectomy (PM) is routinely performed in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with oligometastatic spreading to the lungs. Patients with an aggressive tumor phenotype should be excluded from PM, since its benefit is outweighed by early tumor recurrence and impaired prognosis. Expression of PD-1 and its ligands are prognostic factors in a variety of primary tumors. However, their impact on patients' outcome in the setting of PM for CRC has not been evaluated before. 53 CRC patients with pulmonary metastases receiving PM with curative intent were included in this study...

Thymic carcinoma is a rare, aggressive disease with a low 5-year survival rate. The most common histological neoplastic thymic tumor subtype is squamous cell. We describe an interesting case of a 39-year-old woman who presented with mucinous adenocarcinoma that originated in the thymus and was treated via radical resection and venoplasty of the superior vena cava (SVC). Macroscopically, the resected tumor contained a solid region and multiple cysts with abundant mucin. Microscopic examination showed a papillary growth pattern of goblet cells with round nuclei...

BACKGROUND: Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) increased detection of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs), changing the management based on radiological and clinical factors. When 18-fluorine fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET/CT) was considered for the evaluation of nodules, the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) more than 2.5 is used frequently as a cut off for malignancy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate SUVmax PET/CT and pulmonary attenuation patterns at MSCT in patients with SPN according to morphological and pathological characteristics of the lesion...

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Numerous studies have been performed to investigate the correlation between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation status and the incidence of brain metastases (BMs) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), however, the outcomes were inconsistent. Thus, we performed this study to establish the role of EGFR mutation status in BMs. METHODS: Electronic databases PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CBM, WanFang, CNKI were searched to identify relevant trials...

Measurement of circulating tumor cells (CTC) offers promise as a clinical biomarker to monitor disease status, therapeutic response, and progression in cancer patients. However, its clinical value in lung cancer patients has not been fully explored. We systematically evaluate the association of CTCs with clinical variables and tumor markers in a cohort of lung cancer patients. Using the CELLSEARCH System, CTCs were detected in both small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients prior to therapy...

Mucinous adenocarcinoma is an unusual histological type of lung cancer, and its clinicopathological feature is distinctive from that of other histopathological types of lung adenocarcinoma. Mucinous adenocarcinoma has a mucus-producing function, which explains its name. The present study reports a rare case of a mucus-producing adenocarcinoma of the lung. A 60-year-old Chinese female patient was diagnosed with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung, which manifested as respiratory symptoms, including fever, cough and expectoration...

Rebiopsy is considered an option for specific types of cancer, such as breast, non-small cell lung, and prostate cancer, in clinical trials and in practice. The benefit of rebiopsy comes from the selection of a new treatment strategy based on the genetic profile of the cells, which may reflect the development of drug resistance or hormonal changes. For colorectal cancer, the presence of different genomic mutations between the primary tumor and its metastases is rare, and rebiopsy is therefore not generally performed...

BACKGROUND: Five-year survival in patients with localized prostate cancer (PCa) is nearly 100%, but metastatic disease still remains incurable. Clinical management of metastatic patients has become increasingly complex as novel therapeutic strategies have emerged. This study aims at evaluating the impact of the first metastatic progression on the outcome of PCa patients treated with curative intent. METHODS: The analysis was conducted using data of 913 cases of localized PCa diagnosed between 2000 and 2014...

Our laboratory previously reported an individual-level signature consisting of nine gene pairs, named 9-GPS. This signature was developed by training on microarray expression data and validated using three independent integrated microarray data sets, with samples of stage I non-small cell lung cancer after complete surgical resection. In this study, we first validated the cross-platform robustness of 9-GPS by demonstrating that 9-GPS could significantly stratify the overall survival of 213 stage I lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients detected with RNA-sequencing platform in The Cancer Genome Atlas (log-rank p = 0...

It has been suggested that hepatobiliary carcinomas are less frequent in Wilson's disease (WD) than in liver diseases of other etiology. However, the protective role of copper against malignancies is debated. Only a few cases of cholangiocarcinoma (CCC) in WD have been published. Here we report on a case of a 47-year-old male H1069Q homozygous, Kayser-Fleischer ring positive WD patient with a low ceruloplasmin level who was followed up and treated with chelating agents throughout nine years. The patient presented with neurological symptoms and liver cirrhosis at diagnosis...
