OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the role of treatment of superficial venous reflux in patients with combined deep segmental venous reflux as regards clinical symptoms as well as reflux improvement of the deep veins. SETTING AND DESIGN: We reviewed eighty patients, retrospectively selected on the inclusion criteria and having combined superficial venous reflux and segmental deep venous reflux who underwent superficial venous reflux ablation. The contralateral limb of 44 patients was used as a control group, asked to wear compression stockings for three months during day time with no surgical intervention...

The chronic venous disease covers a wide spectrum of venous disorders that are characterized by severely impaired blood return that primarily affects veins in the lower extremities. Morphological and functional abnormalities of the venous system led to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), and present as leg heaviness/achiness, edema, telangiectasia, and varices. The term 'chronic venous insufficiency' (CVI) refers to a disease of greater severity. Venous dysfunction is associated with venous hypertension and is associated with venous reflux due to poorly functioning or incompetent venous valves, which ultimately reduces venous return, leading to a cascade of morphological, physiological, and histologic abnormalities such as blood pooling, hypoxia, inflammation, swelling, skin changes (lipodermatosclerosis), and in severe cases, venous leg ulcers (VLU)...

SUMMARY: People with cirrhosis of the liver are at risk for complications that can worsen their quality of life and increase morbidity and mortality. Contrary to previous beliefs, cirrhosis does not protect against the development of thromboembolic events, and cirrhotic patients may have higher rates of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The study of chronic venous disease and its impact on patients with cirrhosis is unknown in the literature and may be an important fact since this condition also had impact on quality of life and morbidity...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a modified surgical procedure for the treatment of varicose veins. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was conducted on lower extremities with symptomatic great saphenous vein (GSV) incompetence that underwent stripping from the groin to the knee, with preservation of the superficial epigastric vein (SEV), between January 2015 and April 2022. Follow-up assessments were performed using Doppler ultrasound, Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS), and the Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ) at 6 and 12 months after surgery...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the combination of minimally invasive methods for the treatment of incompetent great saphenous vein and perforating veins. METHODS: Between December 2019 and October 2020, F-care radiofrequency ablation combined with ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and residual perforator ligation and concomitant microphlebectomy were adopted for all eligible patients. The clinical symptoms scores, complications, and quality of life were recorded...

OBJECTIVE: Patient characteristics and risk factors for incomplete or non-closure following thermal saphenous vein ablation have been reported. However, similar findings have not been clearly described following commercially manufactured polidocanol microfoam ablation (MFA). The objective of our study is to identify predictive factors and outcomes associated with non-closure following MFA of symptomatic, refluxing saphenous veins. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained patient database was performed from procedures in our Ambulatory Procedure Unit...

The purpose was to report long-term outcome and to analyse possible predictors for failure. METHODS: The study was a retrospective pooled analysis of two prospective cohorts previously reported, but with prolonged long-term outcome up to 5-years follow-up. OBJECTIVE: Recanalization of the saphenous vein trunk after endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is often associated with recurrent varicose veins or similar. This study aimed to assess the long-term results of RFA of the great saphenous vein (GSV) and identify risk factors for GSV recanalization and RVVs over the follow-up in patients presenting to dedicated outpatient vein centers. METHODS: All consecutive patients with incompetent GSV who underwent RFA between 2009 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed...

Hard-to-heal or recurrent leg ulcers can have multiple aetiologies. One of these is incompetent veins. The main focus of this article is to discuss the common treatment for venous leg ulcers with the use of sclerotherapy. This simple surgical procedure obliterates smaller veins and telangiectasia. Veins with larger diameters (varicosities) can be treated with ablation therapy. The intent of sclerosis or ablation therapy is to destroy the incompetent veins and allow the collateral circulation to improve venous return, decreasing venous hypertension, which then enhances skin closure, wound healing and the resolution of the ulcer...

OBJECTIVE: Remaining symptoms after treatment of superficial venous incompetence is a common problem. Duplex ultrasound (DUS) is often used during follow-up but does not permit an overall quantification of venous function. We have developed a plethysmographic method using occlusion cuffs for separation of superficial and deep venous reflux. By assessing the superficial component it is possible to quantify a potential sub-optimal hemodynamic treatment in patients with superficial venous incompetence...

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are a serious manifestation of chronic venous disease affecting up to 3% of the adult population. This typically recalcitrant and recurring condition significantly impairs quality of life, and its treatment places a heavy financial burden upon healthcare systems. The longstanding mainstay treatment for VLUs is compression therapy. Surgical removal of incompetent veins reduces the risk of ulcer recurrence. However, open surgery is an unpopular option amongst people with VLU, and many people are unsuitable for it...

BACKGROUND: endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) represents the gold standard in treating both great and small saphenous veins (GSV and SSV) incompetence. More than 1 million people are estimated to have lower limb venous ulceration in the UK. Such wounds are predominantly caused by sustained venous hypertension, as a result of chronic venous insufficiency, often due to venous valve incompetence or an impaired calf muscle pump. Compression therapy is key to venous leg ulcer management and the majority of nurses are aware of the importance of starting patients on compression therapy as early as possible. However, there appears to be a lack of awareness of the importance of venous assessment and that more patients could benefit from endovenous correction of superficial venous incompetence...
