BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a serious complication of diabetes, impacting the autonomic nerves that regulate the heart and blood vessels. Timely recognition and treatment of CAN are crucial in averting the onset of cardiovascular complications. Both clinically apparent autonomic neuropathy and subclinical autonomic neuropathy, particularly CAN pose a significant risk of morbidity and mortality in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Notably, CAN can progress silently before manifesting clinically...

A novel method for tracking the tidal volume (TV) from electrocardiogram (ECG) is presented. The method is based on the amplitude of ECG-derived respiration (EDR) signals. Three different morphology-based EDR signals and three different amplitude estimation methods have been studied, leading to a total of 9 amplitude-EDR (AEDR) signals per ECG channel. The potential of these AEDR signals to track the changes in TV was analyzed. These methods do not need a calibration process. In addition, a personalized-calibration approach for TV estimation is proposed, based on a linear model that uses all AEDR signals from a device...

BACKGROUND: The complement system, an upstream recognition system of innate immunity, is activated upon SARS-CoV-2 infection. To gain a deeper understanding of the extent and duration of this activation, we investigated complement activation profiles during the acute phase of COVID-19, its persistence post-recovery and dynamic changes in relation to disease severity. METHODS: Serial blood samples were obtained from two cohorts of hospitalized COVID-19 patients (n = 457)...

BACKGROUND: Autonomic function can be measured noninvasively using heart rate variability (HRV), which indexes overall sympathovagal balance. Deceleration capacity (DC) of heart rate is a more specific metric of vagal modulation. Higher values of these measures have been associated with reduced mortality risk primarily in patients with cardiovascular disease, but their significance in community samples is less clear. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective twin study followed 501 members from the VET (Vietnam Era Twin) registry...

Nasal cycle (NC) is a rhythmic change of lateralised nasal airflow mediated by the autonomous nervous system. Previous studies reported the dependence of NC dominance or more patent side on handedness and hemispheric cerebral activity. We aimed to investigate firstly the possible lateralised effect of NC on olfactory bulb volume and secondly the association of NC with the lateralised cerebral dominance in terms of olfactory processing. Thirty-five subjects (22 women and 13 men, mean age 26 ± 3 years) participated in the study...

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is commonly diagnosed based on clinical criteria and abnormalities in noninvasive imaging reported in patients with biopsy-proven extracardiac sarcoidosis. Electrocardiogram and two-dimensional echocardiography have a low sensitivity for CS detection. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) and positron emission tomography (PET) have limitations in terms of cost and availability. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the usefulness of left ventricular longitudinal strain, measured using two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (STE), for the prediction of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) presence in CMR in patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis...

Iris melanocytes are innervated by parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve endings. Light affects autonomic nervous system activity via the retino-hypothalamic pathway. The hypothesis that the day-to-night variations in the sympatovagal ratio (LF/HF) may differ among individuals with different brown iris patterns was tested. A total of 621 healthy adults, aged between 16 and 50, with brown eyes and not diagnosed with a disease that might affect the autonomous nerve system were included in the study. BACKGROUND: Bradycardia represents a frequent reason for medical presentation and has a complex aetiology, including genetic disorders, like LMNA mutation. LMNA mutation is responsible for laminopathies, including LMNA -cardiomyopathy. Cardiac involvement is prevalent and is linked to dilated cardiomyopathy associated with conduction block, which is anticipated by bradyarrhythmia and supraventricular tachyarrhythmia. LMNA mutation carriers have higher risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD), malignant ventricular tachycardia, and extreme bradycardia...

This study aims to further investigate its safety and efficacy in patients suffering from vagal bradycardia. A total of 60 patients with vagal bradycardia who underwent CNA in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from November 2019 to June 2022. Preoperative atropine tests revealed abnormal vagal tone elevation in all patients. BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding whether ultra-rapid patterns of heart rate variability (eg, heart rate fragmentation [HRF]) are associated with coronary artery calcification (CAC) in a general population. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association between HRF and CAC, and whether these associations are independent of systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels. METHODS: From SESSA (the Shiga Epidemiological Study of Subclinical Atherosclerosis), we used data from 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to identify awake and asleep SBP levels, and data from concurrent 24-hour Holter monitoring to quantify HRF using the awake and asleep percentage of inflection points (PIP)...
