Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important components of the innate immune system and function as the first line of defense against invading pathogens. In current study we identified, cloned and characterized a novel stylicin AMP from Kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus (Mj-sty). The full-length cDNA of Mj-sty was 428 bp with an open reading frame of 315 bp that encoded 104 amino acids. The theoretical molecular mass of mature Mj-sty was 8.693 kDa with an isoelectric point (pI) of 4.79. We assess the performance of six density functionals, each paired with one of five basis sets (a total of 30 model chemistries) for the prediction of geometrical parameters in the coordination sphere of nine vanadium complexes (for a total of 270 structural analyses). We find that results are generally consistent over the range of functionals tested and that none fail drastically. For bond lengths, the model chemistry PBE0/QZVP performed the best overall (having a MAD of only 0.02 Å from experiment) yet PBE0/6-31G* provides nearly identical results...

A pyrolysis gas chromatography (Py-GC) method has been developed to study the composition and microstructure of styrene/methyl methacrylate (STY/MMA) copolymers. The composition was quantified by Py-GC using monomer peak intensity. Because of the poor stability of methyl methacrylate oligomers, neither MMA dimer nor MMA trimers were detected under normal pyrolysis conditions. Well-defined amphiphilic four-arm star P(AA-b-STY) block copolymers have been dispersed in water to form core-shell micelles in which the shell consists of tethered PAA loops. The entropic penalty for having such loops resulted in a less densely packed PSTY core when compared to linear diblock copolymers of the same arm length. The surface of the shell is irregular because of the tethering points, but when cleaved the PAA chains extend to form a regular and relatively uniform corona.
