Crystal violet (CV) is applied in daily use mainly as a commercial dye and antimicrobial agent. Waste water containing CV may affect aquatic ecosystems. Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, is non-toxic and an essential vitamin required for the functions of the human body. Riboflavin is photosensitive to UV and visible light in terms of generating reactive oxygen species. This study investigated the potential application of blue light on riboflavin, so as to come up with an effective way of degrading CV during its treatment...

Body functionality has been identified as an important dimension of body image that has the potential to be useful in the prevention and treatment of negative body image and in the enhancement of positive body image. Specifically, cultivating appreciation of body functionality may offset appearance concerns. However, a scale assessing this construct has yet to be developed. Therefore, we developed the Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS) and examined its psychometric properties among three online community samples totalling 1042 women and men (ns=490 and 552, respectively)...

The new Cu(II) complexes of 1/2/3-(bromophenyl)-3-(1,7,8,9-tetramethyl-3,5-dioxo-4-azatricyclo[5.2.1.0(2,6)]dec-8-en-4-yl)thiourea derivatives have been synthesized. The spectroscopic studies together with density functional theory calculations of Cu(II) complexes revealed that two parent ligands coordinate to the copper cation in bidentate fashion via thiocarbonyl S and deprotonated N atoms forming rarely observed four-membered chelate ring, with nearly planar [CuN2S2] moiety. In solid state, the mononuclear complex is formed for thiourea derivative with 3-bromophenyl, whereas for Cu(II) connection with 2- and 4-bromophenyl-thioureas the formation of dinuclear complexes is observed, the latter formed by the stacking of mononuclear complexes...

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the recent literature on paternal obesity, focusing on the possible mechanisms of transmission of the phenotypes from the father to the children. SOURCES: A non-systematic review in the PubMed database found few publications in which paternal obesity was implicated in the adverse transmission of characteristics to offspring. Specific articles on epigenetics were also evaluated. As the subject is recent and still controversial, all articles were considered regardless of year of publication...

BACKGROUND: Reference tissue-based quantification of brain PET data does not typically include correction for signal originating from blood vessels, which is known to result in biased outcome measures. The bias extent depends on the amount of radioactivity in the blood vessels. In this study, we seek to revisit the well-established Logan plot and derive alternative formulations that provide estimation of distribution volume ratios (DVRs) that are corrected for the signal originating from the vasculature...

The present study aimed to validate the absolute quantitative accuracy of a calibration method for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using cross-calibration factor (CCF)- and system sensitivity-based calibration methods. The CCF obtained with different reconstruction parameters was evaluated using a cylindrical phantom (diameter 20 cm, height 20 cm). SPECT images were acquired with a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (CT) phantom. Subsequently, they were reconstructed by using ordered subset expectation maximization with resolution recovery, scatter, and CT-based attenuation correction...

A number of methods have been reported for determining hydrophobic organic compound adsorption to dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs), but their accuracy and reliability remain uncertain. We have evaluated three methods to investigate the adsorption of phenanthrene (a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, PAH) to CNTs with different physicochemical properties: dialysis tube (DT) protected negligible depletion solid phase microextraction (DT-nd-SPME), ultracentrifugation, and filtration using various types of filters...

Deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV), T-2 toxin (T2), fumonisin B1 (FB1), zearalenone (ZEA), and moniliformin (MON) mycotoxins are common food and feed contaminants produced by Fusarium spp. However, while they are usually found to co-occur in a large range of commodities, only few data are available on mycotoxin co-exposure effects and cellular response mechanisms. In this study, the individual and combined toxic effects of these fusariotoxins were evaluated on the THP-1 human immune cell line as major fusariotoxins are mostly potent immunomodulators...

Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is the phytopathogen that causes black rot disease in cruciferous plants. The XCC2366 gene product is annotated as a protein belonging to the TetR family of transcriptional regulators. In this study, we evaluated the function and expression of the XCC2366 gene. Mutational analysis demonstrated that XCC2366 is involved in the resistance to acriflavin and is necessary for virulence in Xcc. In addition, the XCC2366 transcription initiation site was mapped at nucleotide A, 63 nucleotide upstream of the XCC2366 translation start codon...

Aspiration pneumonia is a cause of mortality in the elderly. Evaluating swallowing function is important. Videofluoroscopy and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing are comparable; however, observing all swallowing dynamics is impossible using the latter approach. We examined the significance of flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing using videofluoroscopy. Thirty-seven patients with dysphagia [70.0 ± 8.9 (range 49-84) years] were included. In random order, patients underwent videofluoroscopy with 10 cc contrast material, once without, and once with an endoscope inserted...

Asthmatic airways are inflamed and undergo remodelling. Inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2-agonist combinations are more effective than inhaled corticosteroid monotherapy in controlling disease exacerbations, but their effect on airway remodelling and inflammation remains ill-defined. This study evaluates the contribution of inhaled fluticasone and salmeterol, alone or combined, to the reversal of bronchial remodelling and inflammation. Severely asthmatic horses (6 horses/group) were treated with fluticasone, salmeterol, fluticasone/salmeterol, or with antigen avoidance for 12 weeks...

A multi-functional optical coherence tomography (OCT) approach is presented to determine ocular fundus pulsations as an axial displacement between the retina and the chorioscleral complex in the albino rat eye. By combining optical coherence elastography and OCT angiography (OCTA), we measure subtle deformations in the nanometer range within the eye and simultaneously map retinal and choroidal perfusion. The conventional OCT reflectivity contrast serves as a backbone to segment the retina and to define several slabs which are subsequently used for quantitative ocular pulsation measurements as well as for a qualitative exploration of the multi-functional OCT image data...
