The first detailed examination of non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis with electrochemical and electrochemiluminescence detections (NACE-EC/ECL), separation parameters and their interactions via central composite design was presented. This concept was demonstrated by examining the optimization separation conditions of seven antihistamines (chlorpheniramine, cyproheptadine, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, methapyrilene, terfenadine, and triprolidine) by NACE-EC/ECL. To evaluate the NACE separation quality, the chromatography resolution statistic function (CRS(-1) function) with regard to the resolution and migration time was established as the response variable...

Minocycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline derivative that is often used in the treatment of acne vulgaris. To date, there has been only one case report of anaphylaxis to minocycline. We report here a case of anaphylaxis to oral minocycline. A 56-yr-old woman visited our hospital after three episodes of recurrent anaphylaxis. We performed an oral challenge test, the standard method for diagnosing drug allergies, with minocycline, one of the drugs she had taken previously. She developed urticaria, angioedema, nausea, vomiting, hypotension, and dyspnea within 4 min and was treated with intramuscular epinephrine, intravenous antihistamine and systemic corticosteroid...

Overproduction of sebum, especially during adolescence, is causally related to acne and inflammation. As a way to reduce sebum and its interference with the process of follicular keratinization in the pilosebaceous unit leading to inflammatory acne lesions, antihistamines were investigated for their effect on sebocytes, the major cell of the sebaceous gland responsible for producing sebum. Reverse transcriptase-PCR analysis and immunofluorescence of an immortalized sebocyte cell line (SZ95) revealed the presence of histamine-1 receptor (H-1 receptor), and thus indicated that histamines and, conversely, antihistamines could potentially modulate sebocyte function directly...

H, antihistamines relieve urticaria by blocking the action of histamine on the target tissue, while demonstration of autoantibodies in the sera of a proportion of the patients having chronic idiopathic urticaria, use of immunosuppressive drugs for the treatment of these patients has acquired the greater rationality. We evaluated the role of corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide in the treatment of chronic dermographic urticaria. Twenty-five patients, 13 males and 12 females, between 18-53 years in age, having chronic dermographic urticaria were taken up for this study...

PURPOSE: To report a case of ocular allergy to topical vancomycin eye drops. METHODS: Interventional case report. RESULTS: A 76-year-old man presented with progressive itching, soreness, and burning sensations, photophobia, and tearing in his left eye 3 days after completing 2 weeks of treatment with 5% vancomycin eye drops. He had been suffering for the previous 2 years from chronic recurrent endophthalmitis and secondary glaucoma associated with cataract surgery in his left eye...

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common eczematous skin condition; as many as 10-17 percent of all children are affected, and 35-60 percent of affected patients manifest symptoms manifest during the first year of life. Treatment principles for AD in young children involve conservative measures such as avoidance of hot water and environmental irritants, combined with liberal use of emollients after bathing. Low potency topical corticosteroids (TCS) are the current standard of therapy for AD in young children, reserving mid- and high-potency TCS for severe disease...

We examined the pattern of prescribed drug use in Danish children and used a pharmacoepidemiological prescription database to identify all reimbursed prescriptions for children aged 0-15 y living in North Jutland County (population 95 189), Denmark, during 1997. We identified 154 189 prescriptions for 48 091 drug users. The 20 most frequently prescribed chemical substance subgroups comprised 71.3% of all prescriptions. The mean annual prescription rate was 1621/1000 children/y. Overall, 50.6% of the population received one or more prescription...

Minocycline, a semisynthetic derivative of tetracycline, has become a commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of persistent acne. It has been associated with a variety of adverse reactions, including one published case of serum sickness. We describe two additional cases of serum sickness reactions due to minocycline, characterized by erythematous rash, arthropathy, and in one case, angioedema. Both patients recovered fully after treatment with an antihistamine in combination with a brief course of corticosteroids...

Pruritus at the site of active acne has not been described before as a complication of acne therapy. We report 8 cases seen over a 3-year period at our department with localized itching mainly at the active acne sites, within 2-6 weeks of starting effective acne therapy. Seven had oral tetracyclines (oxytetracycline, Vibramycin or Minocin) with or without topical antibiotics or benzoyl peroxide. Only 1 patient received oral isotretinoin. The severity of itch was mild to moderate in most cases with the severest reaction in the isotretinoin-treated patient...

H2-antagonists differ from the commonly applied antihistamines (H1-antagonists) by blocking a different spectrum of histamine-mediated pharmacologic reactions. Their effects on the skin as the target organ may be stronger, weaker, or even reverse. The main representative of this group of drugs is cimetidine. Other compounds are still in experimental stages. Some controversial effects were reported in urticaria, pruritus, atopic dermatitis, mastocytosis of the skin, and also in acne and psoriasis. With polyetiologic symptoms, as are manifested in cases of urticaria and pruritus, the efficacy of the drug may depend on the underlying disease...

A 56-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of acne urticata, an intensely pruritic papulopustular eruption. Skin biopsy was nondiagnostic. Touch preparations of individual lesions were remarkable for numerous eosinophils. Peripheral blood count, bone marrow examination, and Philadelphia chromosome positivity confirmed a diagnosis of chronic myelogenous leukemia. A serum histamine level was markedly elevated. Treatment with hydroxyurea and antihistamines led to resolution of the skin eruption and improvement of the pruritus...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate different treatment schedules in some different types of acne using a quantitative counting technique. Systemic treatment with erythromycine 0.5 g daily and topical treatment with clindamycin phosphate solution 1% was found to be optimal from the efficacy/side effect ratio. The combined treatment was tried in heat-provoked and cosmetic acne with favourable results. Doubling of erythromycine dosage could not prevent premenstrual exacerbation of acne. Diazepam 4 mg daily for two weeks followed by an antihistamine in addition to erythromycine 0...

Patients with acne vulgaris and subclinical dermographism constitute a distinct, common, and hitherto unrecognized group. One hundred and thirty such clinical patients were observed in a private dermatology practice. These patients relate that their acne produces the symptoms of itching, burning, soreness, and/or tenderness. The lesions are characterized clinically by one or a combination of the following signs: erythema, violaceous discoloration, ecchymoses, and a scarlet to livid halo about the pustule or inflamed closed comedone...
