The metathesis reaction has been an important tool in both organic and inorganic synthetic chemistry. More specifically in polymer chemistry, ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), via the formation of an active metal-carbene species (MCHR), has been widely used. The elucidation of the mechanism for ROMP opened the way for the development of well-defined catalysts, suited to local conditions. In the present study, we employed density functional theory (DFT) to investigate three reaction pathways for the formation of a species capable of activating ROMP...

Non-transition metal oxides, including major minerals of the early Solar System, are known to evaporate decomposing into multiple gas molecules, while maintaining their stoichiometric compositions (dissociative congruent evaporation). Here, we derived the absolute rate of this type of evaporation using the transition state theory. In our modified transition state theory, the activation energy closely corresponds to the average energy of the molecules at the transition state, reflecting the degree of decomposition at the potential energy barrier along the reaction coordinate of evaporation...

Developing highly efficient methane (CH4) hydrate storage methods and understanding the hydrate dissociation kinetics can contribute to advancing CH4 gas storage and transport. The effects of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) (a thermodynamic promoter) addition on the kinetics of CH4 hydrate were evaluated on the microscopic scale using synchrotron x-ray computed tomography (CT) and powder x-ray diffraction. Microscopic observations showed that a 5 wt. % TBAB solution facilitated the nucleation of CH4 hydrate owing to the initial growth of TBAB semi-clathrate hydrate particles...

Background: Individuals suffering from PTSD following childhood abuse represent a large subgroup of patients attending mental health services. The aim of phase-based treatment is to tailor treatment to the specific needs to childhood abuse survivors with PTSD with a Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) phase, in which emotion dysregulation and interpersonal problems are targeted, and a trauma-focused phase. Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare STAIR + Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) vs...

The properties of colloidal quantum-confined semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), including zero-dimensional (0D) quantum dots, 1D nanorods, 2D nanoplatelets, and their heterostructures, can be tuned through their size, dimensionality, and material composition. In their photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications, a key step is to generate spatially separated and long-lived electrons and holes by interfacial charge transfer. These charge transfer properties have been extensively studied recently, which is the subject of this Review...

The reactivity of the reduction of NO pre-adsorbed on Rh2-9 + clusters by CO was investigated using a combination of an alternate on-off gas injection method and thermal desorption spectrometry. The reduction of Rh n N x O y + clusters by CO was evaluated by varying the CO concentration at T = 903 K. Among the Rh n N x O x + clusters, the Rh3 N2 O2 + cluster exhibited the highest reduction activity, whereas the other clusters, Rh2,4-9 N x O x + , showed lower reactivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for Rh3 + and Rh6 + revealed that the rate-determining step for NO reduction in the presence of CO was NO bond dissociation through the kinetics analysis using the RRKM theory...

Radiation-induced damage of biological matter is an ubiquitous problem in nature. The influence of the hydration environment is widely discussed, but its exact role remains elusive. Utilising well defined solvated-molecule aggregates, we experimentally observed a hydrogen-bonded water molecule acting as a radiation protection agent for ionised pyrrole, a prototypical aromatic biomolecule. Pure samples of pyrrole and pyrrole(H2 O) were outer-valence ionised and the subsequent damage and relaxation processes were studied...

Hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare genetic disorder, is associated with uncontrolled plasma kallikrein (PKa) enzyme activity leading to the generation of bradykinin swelling in subcutaneous and submucosal membranes in various locations of the body. Herein, we describe a series of potent α-amidobenzylboronates as potential covalent inhibitors of PKa. These compounds exhibited time-dependent inhibition of PKa (compound 20 IC50 66 nM at 1 min, 70 pM at 24 h). Further compound dissociation studies demonstrated that 20 showed no apparent reversibility comparable to d-Phe-Pro-Arg-chloromethylketone (PPACK) ( 23 ), a known nonselective covalent PKa inhibitor...

The catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, N2 adsorption and DRS to analyse the effect of pH parameters on the physicochemical properties of the materials during hydrothermal synthesis. The sonocatalytic activity of FeNbO4 microspheres was evaluated by using acid orange 7 (AO7) as the simulated contaminant. However, the presence of interfacial vacancies can serve as charge-trapping sites, leading to the localization of electrons and hindering interfacial charge transfer. Herein, dual oxygen vacancies in the NiFe-layered double hydroxide and Bi2 MoO6- x induced interfacial bonds have been designed for the piezo-photocatalytic N2 oxidation to NO3 - . Trace eyeblink conditioning (TEBC) has been widely used to study associative learning in both animals and humans. In this paradigm, conditioned responses (CRs) to conditioned stimuli (CS) serve as a measure for retrieving learned associations between the CS and the unconditioned stimuli (US) within a trial. Memory consolidation i.e. learning over time, can be quantified as an increase in the proportion of CRs across training sessions. However, how hippocampal oscillations differentiate between successful memory retrieval within a session and consolidation across TEBC training sessions remains unknown...

Heterocycles with saturated N atoms (HetSNs) are widely used electron donors in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. Their relatively low bond dissociation energy (BDE) of exocyclic C-N bonds has been closely related to material intrinsic stability and even device lifetime. Thus, it is imperative to realize fast prediction and precise regulation of those C-N BDEs, which demands a deep understanding of the relationship between the molecular structure and BDE. Herein, via machine learning (ML), we rapidly and accurately predicted C-N BDEs in various HetSNs and found that five-membered HetSNs (5-HetSNs) have much higher BDEs than almost all 6-HetSNs, except emerging boron-N blocks...

Mass-spectrometry-based methods have made significant progress in the characterization of post-translational modifications (PTMs) in peptides and proteins; however, room remains to improve fragmentation methods. Ideal MS/MS methods are expected to simultaneously provide extensive sequence information and localization of PTM sites and retain labile PTM groups. This collection of criteria is difficult to meet, and the various activation methods available today offer different capabilities. In order to examine the specific case of phosphorylation on peptides, we investigate electron transfer dissociation (ETD), electron-activated dissociation (EAD), and 193 nm ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) and compare all three methods with classical collision-induced dissociation (CID)...

However, the mechanisms underlying the accumulation of PFAS in these products remain unclear. Here, we used native mass spectrometry and molecular dynamics simulations to probe the interactions between 19 PFAS of environmental concern and two isoforms of the major bovine whey protein β-lactoglobulin (β-LG). Computational investigations were conducted on the QUINOX-catalyzed asymmetric allylation of aromatic aldehydes with allyltrichlorosilanes. Our calculations provide evidence that the catalytic allylation can follow distinct mechanisms, depending on the solvent employed. In toluene and CH2 Cl2 , the QUINOX-catalyzed allylation predominantly follows an associative pathway, while in CH3 CN, a dissociative pathway becomes more favorable. Noncovalent interactions, such as π-stacking effects for the associative mechanism and CH/π interactions for the dissociative mechanism, play a pivotal role in enantiostereodifferentiation in the asymmetric QUINOX-catalyzed reactions of benzaldehyde...
