From July 1985 through January 1986, 43 patients underwent urinary diversion that included creation of a continent reservoir from an ileal segment, according to the method described originally by Kock. An important modification included removal of a narrow strip of mesentery for 8 cm along the afferent and efferent limbs of the pouch to allow adequate ileal intussusception and fixation of the nipple valves to prevent reflux and to ensure continence. A strip of PGA mesh serves as a collar to fix the afferent-efferent limb to the pouch once the intussusception technique has been accomplished...

The authors devised a new handy apparatus for iontophoresis in order to prevent pulp irritation caused by tooth reduction. This study was intended to observe the ability of the device. 8% zinc chloride solution was iontophoresed in the dentin of extracted human and bovine teeth by the device. Then, the dye and microbial invasion tests were carried out to investigate how effectively it could seal the dentinal tubules. The following conclusions were drawn: 1. By the zinc iontophoresis, the zinc briefly penetrated into the deep portion of the dentin...

Experiments were performed on 27 rabbits, bivagotomized, gallamine triethiodide immobilized and artificially ventilated. The effects of electric stimulation of "Renzhong" (Du26) area, NPBM separately, and "Renzhong" area and nucleus parabrachialis medialis (NPBM) simultaneously, on phrenic nerve discharge were observed before and after electolytic and chemical lesion of NPBM. Evoked potential (EP) could be recorded in NPBM during the electric stimulation "Renzhong" area. Electric stimulation of the same site of NPBM where the EP was recorded could induce respiratory response and change the effect of electric stimulation of "Renzhong" area on respiration...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
S Jeffery, S E Hawkins
The presence of electolytes inhibited the transformation of Naegleria gruberi from amoeba to flagellate, the molarity required varying with the salt used, namely 80 mM NaCl, 90 mM KCl, 50 mM CaCl2 or 60 mM MgCl2. Non-electrolytes also prevented this transformation at 250 mM for either sucrose or glucose, and this is known to be an osmotic effect. That the effect of ionic solutions was different was demonstrated by varying the time at which the environemnt was changed from distilled water to salt solution. Experiments with suspensions of either living or heat-killed bacteria in distilled water, together with the supernatants obtained when bacteria were removed by centrifugation, showed that the inhibition of transformation which occurred in bacterial suspensions was not due to any factors produced by the bacteria and present in solution...

Hypertonic urea solutions (58 per cent weight/volume) were injected rapidly into ten anesthetized rhesus monkeys at a dose of approximately 2 Gm. per kilogram by the intravenous, intraperitoneal, or intra-amniotic routes. An additional monkey received an intra-amniotic dose of 12.5 Gm. per kilogram. A tracer dose 14C-urea was included for measuring absorption and elimination. The following parameters were monitored before and for four hours after urea injection: arterial and cerebrospinal fluid pressures, heart and respiration rates, urine flow, and urea clearance...

The effect of scorpion venom of Buthus Tamulus species on blood pressure, ECG, enzyme and electrolytes were studied in dogs. Venom was given in doses of 2 and 4 mg/kg body weight. Hypotension and tachycardia were observed with low dose and bradycardia was significant with high dose. ST segment depression, T wave changes, shortening of PR interval were the important ECG changes apart from ventricular extrasystoles. With high dose, QRS amplitude was reduced and duration prolonged. QTC interval was also significantly prolonged...

The present study was carried out in 25 hypertensive uremic patients on regular 4 h dialysis, 3 times a week. Plasma 18-hydroxy-11-deoxycorticosterone (18-OH-DOC), aldosterone (PA) and corticosteroids were determined by radioimmunoassay and competitive protein binding technique before and at the end of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd hour of hemodialysis. Plasma 18-HD-DOC was normal before dialysis and did not change significantly during hemodialysis, whereas body fluids and electolytes decreased progressively. No correlation was observed between blood pressure and 18-OH-DOC during dialysis...

The selective appetites of wild rabbits for 500 mEq/1 solutions of NaC1, KC1, MgC1(2), and CaC1(2) were studied in intact and adrenalectomized rabbits during daily treatment with either 4 IU long acting ACTH, 1.0 or 2.5 mg cortisol acetate, or 2.5 mg corticosterone. The animals were individually caged and external sodium balances performed. In intact rabbits, cortisol or corticosterone produced a significant stimulation of NaC1 appetite. The response to concurrent dosage of cortisol and corticosterone was less than half of that obtained with ACTH which produced a comparable alteration of blood glucocorticoid levels but a 10-fold increase in NaC1 intake...
