Recent discoveries have established functional guanylate cyclase (GC) catalytic centers with low activity within kinase domains in plants. These crypto GCs generate guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) essential for both intramolecular and downstream signaling. Here, we have set out to search for such crypto GCs moonlighting in kinases in the H. sapiens proteome and identified 18 candidates, including the neurotropic receptor tyrosine kinase 1 (NTRK1). NTRK1 shows a domain architecture much like plant receptor kinases such as the phytosulfokine receptor, where a functional GC essential for downstream signaling is embedded within a kinase domain...

We analyse the pattern of daily price of a collection of artistic non-fungible tokens, namely, the "Bored Ape Yacht Club" (BAYC) collectibles, over the first year of their life, from May 2021 to May 2022. Taking a time-series analysis approach, we consider the daily average price, and other variants of daily price index, derived from hedonic regression model. Aesthetic features of the collectibles do matter. At the same time, the price series emerge to be non-stationary, integrated of order 1, with their first difference exhibiting heteroscedasticity and autoregressive variance...

BACKGROUND: Cryptocurrencies are a popular investment tool today. However, some studies highlight the investing behavior of cryptocurrencies similar to pathological gambling. Investing behavior becomes risky when it is not based on proper and adequate analysis and carries the possibility of big losses as well as big gains. For this reason, we aimed to determine the potential risky investor profile by age, gender, personality traits and impulsivity levels. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Six hundred and fifty-four cryptocurrencies investors (529 was male, 125 was female, their mean age was 35...

Nymphoides peltata has been widely used pharmacologically in traditional Chinese medicine to treat heat strangury and polyuria. The aim of this study was to isolate the bioactive components from N. peltata and evaluate their potential use as antioxidant and anti-wrinkle agents. Phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of N. peltata roots led to the isolation of 15 compounds ( 1 - 15 ), which were structurally determined as α-spinasterol ( 1 ), 3- O - β -D-glucopyranosyl-oleanolic acid 28- O - β -D-glucuronopyranoside ( 2 ), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid ( 3 ), protocatechuic acid ( 4 ), vanillic acid ( 5 ), p -coumaric acid ( 6 ), caffeic acid ( 7 ), ferulic acid ( 8 ), neochlorogenic acid (neo-CQA) ( 9 ), chlorogenic acid (CQA) ( 10 ), cryptochlorogenic acid (crypto-CQA) ( 11 ), isochlorogenic acid B (3,4-DCQA) ( 12 ), isochlorogenic acid A (3,5-DCQA) ( 13 ), isochlorogenic acid C (4,5-DCQA) ( 14 ), and 3,4,5-tri- O -caffeoylquinic acid (TCQA) ( 15 )...

Chemical anomalies in polar ice core records are frequently linked to volcanism; however, without the presence of (crypto)tephra particles, links to specific eruptions remain speculative. Correlating tephras yields estimates of eruption timing and potential source volcano, offers refinement of ice core chronologies, and provides insights into volcanic impacts. Here, we report on sparse rhyolitic glass shards detected in the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core (West Antarctica), attributed to the 1...

However, the combination of versatile peptides and 2D materials are rarely used for multipurpose integrated applications, including biosensing, information processing and security. Sentientism is the most influential position in animal ethics. It presents sentience as decisive for integrating animals in ethics. Nevertheless, its significance for animal ethical argumentation is not quite clear. Does it mean (a) that sentience is a valuable state, which awards sentient individuals the moral prize of something like 'intrinsic value'? (b) Or is sentience an empirical fact that informs how animal welfare can be adequately realised in samples of certain species? (c) Or does sentience explain psychologically why humans identify emotionally with singular animals? Additionally, the questions show how different animals are addressed, namely (a) as individual units of sentience (individuality), (b) as representatives of certain species (exemplarity), and (c) as unique relata in distinguished human-animal relationships (singularity)...

Due to the increasing capabilities of cybercriminals and the vast quantity of sensitive data, it is necessary to protect remote sensing images during data transmission with "Belt and Road" countries. Joint image compression and encryption techniques exhibit reliability and cost-effectiveness for data transmission. However, the existing methods for multiband remote sensing images have limitations, such as extensive preprocessing times, incompatibility with multiple bands, and insufficient security. To address the aforementioned issues, we propose a joint encryption and compression algorithm (JECA) for multiband remote sensing images, including a preprocessing encryption stage, crypto-compression stage, and decoding stage...

Despite its relatively brief history, cryptocurrency has already had a profound impact on the economy, with some predicting that it will eventually replace traditional fiat currencies. Historically, it had dark associations with illegal activities in the early days, although perceptions and associations likely have, in recent years, changed for the better. Thus, understanding how people perceive the morality of cryptocurrency currently forms the motivation of the current research. We, in particular, examine associations dependent on political ideology...

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects around 15% of all couples worldwide and is increasingly linked to variants in genes specifically expressed in the testis. Well-established causes of male infertility include pathogenic variants in the genes TEX11, TEX14, and TEX15, while few studies have recently reported variants in TEX13B, TEX13C, FAM9A (TEX39A), and FAM9B (TEX39B). OBJECTIVES: We aimed at screening for novel potential candidate genes among the human TEX ("testis expressed") genes as well as verifying previously described disease associations in this set of genes...

Infectious diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly for children in low- and middle-income countries. Cryptosporidium is a diarrheal pathogen for which there is no vaccine and current therapies are only partially effective. In this issue of the JCI, Gilchrist, Campo, and colleagues surveyed a large cohort of Bangladeshi children to profile antibody responses against an array of Cryptosporidium proteins. They discovered 233 proteins to which children developed antibodies, identified seven as being associated with protection from reinfection, and provided insights regarding the longevity of Cryptosporidium antibodies and the development of antibody breadth...

This Cultural Commons article provide some coordinates that help explain why cryptocurrencies have recently become mainstream, indicating their connection to precarisation and new class formations. It considers how this change has been achieved by examining the impact of ICTs (information and communications technologies) on the process of socialisation and re-signification of finance. Finally, it explores how these shifts might be related to the emergence of a peculiar form of digital and cultural commons. It grants that this last idea might appear odd, far-fetched, or downright inappropriate, since investment by individuals for individual profit is a defining characteristic of the realm of crypto-finance...

Organophosphate pesticides are used in agriculture due to their high effectiveness and low persistence in eradicating insects and pests. However, conventional detection methods encounter the limitation of undesired detection specificity. Thus, screening phosphonate-type organophosphate pesticides (OOPs) from their analogues, phosphorothioate organophosphate pesticides (SOPs), remains a challenge. Here, we reported a d-penicillamine@Ag/Cu nanocluster (DPA@Ag/Cu NCs)-based fluorescence assay to screen OOPs from 21 kinds of organophosphate pesticides, which can be used for logic sensing and information encryption...

Ransomware is a malicious class of software that utilises encryption to implement an attack on system availability. The target's data remains encrypted and is held captive by the attacker until a ransom demand is met. A common approach used by many crypto-ransomware detection techniques is to monitor file system activity and attempt to identify encrypted files being written to disk, often using a file's entropy as an indicator of encryption. However, often in the description of these techniques, little or no discussion is made as to why a particular entropy calculation technique is selected or any justification given as to why one technique is selected over the alternatives...

Through cooperation, robot swarms can perform tasks or solve problems that a single robot from the swarm could not perform/solve by itself. However, it has been shown that a single Byzantine robot (such as a malfunctioning or malicious robot) can disrupt the coordination strategy of the entire swarm. Therefore, a versatile swarm robotics framework that addresses security issues in inter-robot communication and coordination is urgently needed. Here, we show that security issues can be addressed by setting up a token economy between the robots...
