Pituitary adenomas with sphenoid sinus or clivus invasion are not uncommon, but the pathogenesis responsible for this phenomenon remains unclear. Cathepsin K, expressed predominantly in osteoclasts, can degrade type I collagen and plays an essential role in bone resorption. Recent studies reported the expression of Cathepsin K in various malignant tumors, such as bone, breast, lung and prostate cancers, and its expression is further increased in bone metastasis or invasive subpopulations. In addition, cathepsin K inhibitors (CatKi) were demonstrated to effectively prevent or reduce osteolytic lesions in breast cancers with bone metastasis...

BACKGROUND: Multiple endoscopic surgical options exist to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). HoLEP alleviates obstructive prostatic tissue via enucleation, both bluntly with a resectoscope and by cutting tissue with the holmium laser, and removal of adenoma via morcellation. This article reviews patient selection for HoLEP in order to optimize outcomes, costs, and patient satisfaction. METHODS: A literature review of all studies on HoLEP was conducted...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Patients being treated for prostate cancer (PCa) have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. However, whether PCa patients are inherently at a higher risk of colorectal neoplasms (CRNs) is unknown. We aimed to investigate the risk of CRNs in PCa patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who had been diagnosed with PCa at a tertiary medical center and had colonoscopy within 1 year of the PCa diagnosis were investigated. Patients were propensity-matched 1:2 by age and body mass index to asymptomatic control subjects who had undergone colonoscopy for routine health screening...

Alterations in the cyclic (c)AMP-dependent signaling pathway have been implicated in the majority of benign adrenocortical tumors (ACTs) causing Cushing syndrome (CS). Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are enzymes that regulate cyclic nucleotide levels, including cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Inactivating mutations and other functional variants in PDE11A and PDE8B, two cAMP-binding PDEs, predispose to ACTs. The involvement of these two genes in ACTs was initially revealed by a genome-wide association study in patients with micronodular bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia...

INTRODUCTION: Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP) is a surgical approach for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Limited evidence suggests laser ablation/vaporization is inferior to enucleation with respect to reoperation rates. Our objective was to determine if properly performed laser ablation results in outcomes similar to enucleation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 198 patients with moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms and/or acute urinary retention had holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) or HoLAP between 2008 and 2014...

Pleomorphic adenoma gene like-2 (PLAGL2) is a member of the PLAG gene family. Previous studies have revealed that overexpression of PLAGL2 is associated with many human cancers. However, it has been reported that PLAGL2 also plays as a tumor suppressor. The precise role of PLAGL2 in prostate cancer (PCa) is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression and prognostic value of PLAGL2 in PCa. Data from microarray datasets demonstrated that the DNA copy number and mRNA level of PLAGL2 were significantly increased in PCa compared with normal prostate...

We report the incidental finding of a pituitary macroadenoma on an F-choline PET/CT in a patient with recurrent prostate cancer. The pituitary gland was clearly enlarged and intensely FDG avid (SUVmax, 6.6). The diagnosis was confirmed by a subsequent contrast-enhanced MR evaluation, and the macroadenoma was classified as nonfunctioning on the basis of normality of the specific serum hormonal profile. A follow-up F-choline PET/CT scan performed after 6 months revealed stable dimension, and uptake of the pituitary macroadenoma patient deceased 1 month later...

Nephrogenic adenoma (NA), referred to as nephrogenic metaplasia, is a rare benign lesion of the urinary tract. NA is histologically characterized by tubular and papillary formations lined by low cuboidal to columnar epithelial cells. NA is also immunohistochemically characterized by positivity for paired box (PAX) 2, PAX8 and cytokeratin 7, and negative for p63 and prostate-specific antigen. In this study, we present 3 cases of NA arising in the urinary bladder of elderly male patients with predisposing factors: patient 1 had undergone transurethral lithotripsy due to a ureteral stone; patient 2 had undergone transurethral resection of a urothelial carcinoma in the urinary bladder; and patient 3 had been treated with Bacillus-Calmettle-Guérin due to a urothelial carcinoma in the urinary bladder...
