The role of antibiotics in the treatment of ulcerative colitis is limited. We present a case of a 25-year-old woman who presented with a flare of ulcerative colitis after an episode of infectious gastroenteritis on a background of known primary sclerosing cholangitis. After the flare, she experienced persistent abdominal pain and diarrhea associated with elevated fecal calprotectin and deep rectosigmoid ulcerations on endoscopy. After unsuccessful trials of vedolizumab, infliximab, and tofacitinib, the patient was commenced on ustekinumab, tacrolimus, and oral vancomycin...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexual self-efficacy refers to a woman's belief that she can be sexually active and attractive for her sexual partner and has acceptable sexual function. One of the issues that may negatively affect sexual self-efficacy is HIV infection. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of counseling based on mindfulness on sexual self-efficacy of women affected with HIV. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial involving 62 HIV-positive women in their reproductive age...

A 67-year-old woman was enrolled in our 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT tumor clinical trial due to her lung adenocarcinoma. The PET/CT scan additionally revealed increased uptake of FAPI in the tongue. Combined with the patient's medical history and the contrast-enhanced CT of the maxillofacial region, it was suspected to be a hemangioma. Subsequently, the patient underwent surgery and was diagnosed with capillary hemangioma of the left side of her tongue.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological distress is prevalent in couples facing breast cancer. Couples often deal with breast cancer as a unit instead of as individuals. Couple's dyadic coping is important for their adjustment to breast cancer; however, little is known about how couple's coping congruence influences their distress. This study examined how common dyadic coping (CDC) and coping congruence impact psychological distress in couples facing breast cancer. METHODS: Baseline data were analyzed from 343 women with recently diagnosed early-stage breast cancer and their partners who participated in a randomized clinical trial...

The treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has undergone a change because of the advancement of new therapies, like immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), including pembrolizumab. BACKGROUND: We previously identified that zoledronate administered at 18-month intervals reduced fragility fractures by a third in a 6-year trial of women older than 65 years with osteopenia. This extension aims to identify the persistence of these effects. METHODS: Of the 2000 ambulant, community dwelling, postmenopausal women older than 65 years recruited in Auckland, New Zealand, with T-scores at the total hip or femoral neck in the range -1·0 to -2·5, we invited participants who received four doses of intravenous zoledronate, completed follow-up to year 6 of the core trial, did not have metabolic bone disease (other than osteoporosis), and were not using bone-active drugs into this 4-year observational study extension, during which further treatment was at the discretion of their own doctors...

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and highly aggressive primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma most often occurring in the elderly. Risk factors include chronic sun exposure and immunosuppression (1). MCC is associated with frequent recurrences and a high metastatic potential and mortality rate (1). It is the second most common cause of skin-cancer-related death after melanoma. At primary diagnosis with an apparent cutaneous tumor, loco-regional metastases are present in up to 30% of patients, and 6-12% have distant metastatic disease (2-3)...

The genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) encompasses a range of symptoms linked to the genitourinary tract stemming from the reduction in estrogen levels following menopause. These symptoms may endure throughout a woman's lifetime. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), known for its capacity to induce angiogenesis and the restoration effects of growth factors, has been widely employed in various disorders, including GSM. This article aims to comprehensively review the existing literature on the utilization of PRP for managing GSM...

INTRODUCTION: The advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors marks significant progress in the evolution of cancer treatment. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated the success of immune-oncologic (IO) agents like pembrolizumab (Keytruda™ ) in combination with chemotherapy against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) [Ann Oncol. 2017 Jun 1;28(6):1388-1398]. There is less literature investigating pembrolizumab in monotherapy and in cases of rare tumor mutational burden. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 65-year-old Native American and African American woman with previous incomplete lines of therapy diagnosed with recurrent TNBC and pulmonary metastases...

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend open surgery for atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) in the breast due to risk of underestimating malignant disease. Considering the ongoing randomized trials of active surveillance of low-risk ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), it seems reasonable to define a low-risk group of women with ADH where a conservative approach is appropriate. The aim here was to evaluate the management and risk for upgrade of lesions diagnosed as ADH in percutaneous breast biopsies in two Swedish hospitals...

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a common complication in patients receiving allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). GVHD is characterized as either acute or chronic based on symptomatology and histopathological findings. Despite advancements in disease-targeting therapeutics, steroid-refractory GVHD remains a significant contributor to mortality in HSCT recipients, highlighting the gaps in our understanding of its pathophysiology and treatment strategies. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with acute undifferentiated leukemia, who exhibited persistently elevated levels of serum total bilirubin (T...

Background : Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a heterogeneous and highly comorbid disorder. Suicidality, aggression and substance abuse are common presentations of BPD. Our case series is the first to highlight the role of brexpiprazole in improving these symptoms in patients with BPD. Case presentation : We describe three cases demonstrating the role of brexpiprazole in improving BPD's prominent features and comorbidities. All cases improved when brexpiprazole was added to their treatment regime. PURPOSE: Black women with breast cancer often present with more aggressive disease when compared to other races, contributing to an increased risk of cancer mortality. Despite this inequity, Black women remain severely underrepresented in breast cancer clinical trials. We aim to characterize factors that influence a woman's decision to enroll in a clinical trial, with the goal of identifying clinical interventions to aid in the recruitment of vulnerable groups.
