As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread rapidly, there are still many unresolved questions of how this virus would impact on autoimmune inflammatory joint diseases and autoinflammatory disorders. The main aim of this paper is to describe the main studies focusing their attention on COVID-19 incidence and outcomes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondylarthritis (SpA), and autoinflammatory disease cohorts. We also revised possible pathogenic mechanisms associated with...

Animal models of autoimmune diseases, either spontaneous or induced, have been very useful tools to investigate the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of human autoimmune diseases as well as in the design of new therapeutic strategies for their treatment. The development of biotechnology and molecular biology resulted in the production of transgenic animals overexpressing or lacking a given protein. As a result of this technology, a great number of animal models of human diseases have been developed in recent years...

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a non-frequent vasculitis of small- and medium-sized vessels. Psoriatic arthritis (PA) is described as a "unique inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis" with an inexact prevalence rate due to the lack of widely accepted classification criteria. We describe the case of an 11-year-old boy that presented with fever of unknown origin plus clinical signs of sacroiliitis, bilateral enthesitis of the plantar fascia, and skin psoriasis. He acutely developed erythematous and tender nodular lesions in the lower limbs that lasted around 3 weeks and spontaneously disappeared at the same time as the fever...

Approximately 80% of the adult population suffers from chronic lumbar pain with episodes of acute back pain. The aetiology of this disorder can be very extensive: degenerative scoliosis, spondiloarthritis, disc hernia, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis and, in the most serious cases, neoplastic or infectious diseases. For several years, the attention of surgeons was focused on the articular facets syndrome (Lilius et al. in J Bone Joint Surg (Br) 71-B:681-684, 1998), characterised clinically by back pain and selective pressure soreness at the level of the facets involved...

AIM: To study features of heart disease in patients with alkylosing spondyloarthritis (ASA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 56 ASA patients. Most of the examinees had spinal problems, moderate activity, x-ray sacroileitis stage III. RESULTS: Pulmonary hypertension was detected in 60.7%, right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy--in 37.5%, RV dilation--in 30.4% patients. Interventricular septum, left ventricular posterior wall were thickened (p < 0...
