Bifidobacteria are assumed to exert colonization resistance to enteric pathogens. We associated C3H germfree mice with either Bifidobacterium longum or Escherichia coli or both strains and studied how they settled in the gut and the lymphoid organs as well as their effect on mucus composition. Within 24 hE. coli colonized the gut of germfree or B. longum ex-germfree mice. In contrast,B. longum was established in the intestine of E. coli ex-germfree mice only 1 month after inoculation whereas it colonized the germfree gut within 24 h...

The effects of fructans in the diet on the mucosal morphometry (height of villi, depth of the crypts, number of goblet cells), the thickness of the epithelial mucus layer and the histochemical composition of intestinal mucosubstances in the distal jejunum and the distal colon were investigated by comparing germ-free (GF) rats, rats harbouring Bacteroides vulgatus and Bifidobacterium longum (diassociated (DA) rats), and rats with a human faecal flora (HFA). The rats were fed either a commercial standard diet (ST) or ST + (50 g oligofructose (OF)-long-chain inulin (lcIN))/kg...

BACKGROUND: Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is an association of multiple trichoepitheliomas and cylindromas, sometimes accompanied by other adnexal tumors. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old woman with trichoepitheliomas involving the naso-genal and mental areas associated with cylindromas and spiradenomas on the forehead and pretragal regions creating a turban effect. Other complete or diassociated syndromes were found in family members. No neoplastic tumor was identified. DISCUSSION: Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is an hereditary disease with autosomal dominant transmission...
