Toxoplasma gondii chronic infection is characterized by the establishment of tissue cysts in the brain and increased levels of IFN-γ, which can lead to brain circuitry interference and consequently abnormal behaviour in mice. In this sense, the study presented here sought to investigate the impact of chronic infection by two T. gondii strains in the brain of infection-resistant mice, as a model for studying the involvement of chronic neuroinflammation with the development of behavioural alterations. For that, male BALB/c mice were divided into three groups: non-infected (Ni), infected with T...

Introduction The characterization of tumor microenvironment (TME) related-factors and their impact on tumor progression have attracted much interest. We investigated cancer cells and CAFs to evaluate biomarkers that are associated with neoplastic progression, observing them in different interface zones of colorectal cancer. Methods On 357 CRC tissue microarrays, using immunohistochemistry, we examined the associations of podoplanin and α-SMA expressed in cancer cells and CAFs and evaluated them in different areas: tumor core, invasive front, tumor budding, tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) scoring, and desmoplastic stroma...

Based on previous studies, we hypothesized that the dietary inflammatory potential in pregnant women might influence maternal and child health. The objective of this work is to review the literature on the association of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) during pregnancy with early and late maternal and child health outcomes. We searched Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Virtual Health Library. Observational studies on DII in the gestational period that met the objective of this review were selected...

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of sclerotherapy efficacy for lower limb telangiectasias, which is the standard treatment for such condition, is commonly assisted by scores based on before and after pictures. This method is marked by its subjectivity, which impairs the precision of studies on the subject, making it unfeasible to evaluate and compare different interventions. We hypothesize that a quantitative method for evaluating the effectiveness of sclerotherapy for lower limb telangiectasias may present more reproducible results...

The detection of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. was performed, along with the identification of the ciliated protozoa biodiversity, to evaluate the correlation between these protozoa in freshwater quality monitoring. Water and sediment samples from two sites in the Atibaia River (Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil) were collected monthly for 2 years (n = 96). Pathogenic protozoa in water and sediment were detected by using immunomagnetic separation, followed by visualization by immunofluorescence assay (IFA)...

Triacylglycerols (TAGs) and cholesterol lipoprotein levels are widely used to predict cardiovascular risk and metabolic disorders. The aim of this study is to determine how the comprehensive lipidome (individual molecular lipid species) determined by mass spectrometry is correlated to the serum whole-lipidic profile of adults with different lipidemic conditions. The study included samples from 128 adults of both sexes, and they were separated into four groups according to their lipid profile: Group I-normolipidemic (TAG < 150 mg/dL, LDL-C < 160 mg/dL and HDL-c > 40 mg/dL); Group II-isolated hypertriglyceridemia (TAG ≥ 150 mg/dL); Group III-isolated hypercholesterolemia (LDL-C ≥ 160 mg/dL) and Group IV-mixed dyslipidemia...

However, the mechanisms that could influence functional capacity in individuals with chronic stroke are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine which modifiable variables would best predict self-reported functional capacity after stroke...

Peptides possess high chemical diversity at the amino acid sequence level, which further translates into versatile functions. Peptides with self-assembling properties can be processed into diverse formats giving rise to bio-based materials. Peptide-based spun fibers are an interesting format due to high surface-area and versatility, though the field is still in its infancy due to the challenges in applying the synthetic polymer spinning processes to protein fibers to peptides. In this work we show the use of solution blow-spinning to produce peptide fibers...

Few studies have assessed biomarkers for the differentiation of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). However, some elements of depression such as hormones and receptors of the renin-angiotensin-adrenal system (RAAS), the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and history of early-life stress (ELS) could be considered for differential diagnosis. Therefore, this study aimed to assess aldosterone and cortisol levels, MR and GR gene polymorphisms, and ELS as potential biomarkers for differentiating MDD and BD...

The objective was to evaluate the performance, carcass and meat quality of 40 lambs classified by RFI (residual feed intake) and RIG (residual intake and gain). Dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded to calculate the RFI and RIG, classified as efficient, moderately or inefficient. After the confinement period, they were slaughtered and the carcass and meat quality were determined. The efficient animals had DMI scores of 0.700 RFI and 0.400 kg/d RIG, lower than the inefficient ones with similar weight gain. The RFI efficient animals showed greater shear force, without effect in the RIG classification...
