Previous studies reported inconsistent findings about the relationship between pretreatment thrombocytosis and survival in patients with cervical cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of thrombocytosis in cervical cancer. We searched databases to identify relevant articles. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs), odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Fourteen studies including 3,394 patients were eligible for the meta-analysis. Overall, an elevated platelet count was significantly associated with inferior overall survival (OS, hazard ratio [HR]: 1...

In the last decades, a group of viruses has received great attention due to its relationship with cancer development and its wide distribution throughout the vertebrates: the papillomaviruses. In this article, we aim to review some of the most relevant reports concerning the use of bovines as an experimental model for studies related to papillomaviruses. Moreover, the obtained data contributes to the development of strategies against the clinical consequences of bovine papillomaviruses (BPV) that have led to drastic hazards to the herds...

In the natural history of HPV infections, the HPV virions can induce two different pathways, namely the infec- tious virion producing pathway and the clonal transforming pathway. An overview is given of the burden that is associated with HPV infections that can both lead to cervical cancer and/or temporal subfertility. That HPV infections cause serious global health burden due to HPV-associated cancers is common knowledge, but that it is also responsible for a substantial part of idiopathic subfertility is greatly underestimated...

AIMS: To summarise and evaluate the current literature in gynaecological tumours treated with stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) through a systematic review using the Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guideline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search through Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane databases resulted in 22 pertinent manuscripts. Selected studies evaluated the locoregional role of SABR in gynaecological tumours, regardless of SABR clinical indication...

Cervical cancer (CC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death and a major public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa. This heavy burden parallels that of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, which increases the risk of developing CC. Despite the progressive reduction of HIV prevalence in the past decade, the CC incidence and mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa remain high. The heterogeneity of the distribution of the two diseases in the African continent, together with the different availability of human and material resources, stands in the way of finding an appropriate screening strategy...

Gynaecological cancers accounted for 16.3% of all cancers and 13.9% of all cancer deaths in women globally in 2012. Cancer of the cervix is the most common gynaecological cancer, followed by cancers of the uterus and the ovary. Although cervical cancer is almost exclusively triggered by human papilloma virus infection, approximately 5% of all uterine cancers and 20% of all ovarian cancers are caused by germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes. A number of genetic syndromes are associated with rarer gynaecological tumours...

BACKGROUND: Perineural invasion (PNI) is correlated with adverse survival in several malignancies, but its significance cervical cancer remains to be clearly defined. The objective of this study was to determine the association between PNI status and clinical outcomes in clinically localized surgically treated cervical cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed clinical records and pathology slides of 111 patients with cervical cancer treated with surgery at a single academic center...

Phytoalexins are substances produced by plants that act as potent inhibitors of pathogens. Pterocarpans are biologically active isoflavonoids most commonly found in the family Fabaceae that have the ability to act as phytoalexins. It is made up of a tetracyclic ring system possessing benzofuran-benzopyran. A very great number of pterocarpans have been isolated from natural sources and they are proved to have significant biological activities such as anti-microbial, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory and anti-malarial activities...

OBJECTIVE: The role of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy alone for staging of early-stage cervical cancer remains controversial. We aimed to determine the validity of this technique in women with early-stage cervical cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed women with early-stage cervical cancer who underwent SLN mapping followed by complete pelvic lymphadenectomy as part of initial surgical management from August 1997 through October 2015. All modes of surgical approach were included...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prognostic role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in cervical cancer are controversial. We conducted this meta-analysis to obtain a more accurate assessment of prognostic significance of NLR in cervical cancer. RESULTS: A total of 9 studies, consisting of 2,804 patients, were selected in this meta-analysis. Our pooled results showed that high pre-treatment NLR level was significantly associated with poorer overall survival (HR: 1.88, 95% CI 1...

INTRODUCTION: Cancer of the uterine cervix is the fourth most common cancer worldwide among women. However, there is limited data about elderly cervical cancer patients and gross underrepresentation of elderly patients in clinical trials. Hence, the optimal therapy of such patients is not well formulated. METHODOLOGY: We conducted this systematic review of evidence to assess patterns of care in elderly patients with cervical cancer. RESULTS: A total of 17,338 publications are reported in PubMed until July, 2016 pertaining to cervical cancer...

AIM: There is strong evidence to suggest vertical and horizontal modes of transmission of human papilloma virus (HPV), an established etiologic agent of cervical cancer. Infants, children, and adults can acquire both high-risk and low-risk infections by birth or by close contact even though HPV is mainly transmitted sexually. A thorough review of the literature was performed to assess the possible non-sexual modes of transmission of HPV. METHODS: An electronic search of databases for review articles, cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, and case reports on non-sexual modes of transmission among sexually unexposed women and children was carried out using search terms such as "human papilloma virus, HPV, transmission, horizontal transmission, vertical transmission, and fomites"...

The purpose of this article is to review women's health issues that affect underserved populations. Certain groups have a lack of health care resources or inability to access resources. Individuals encounter barriers to accessing health care due to socioeconomic status, transportation, intimate partner issues, and distrust of the health care system. These factors lead to health care disparities and a lack of appropriate care or quality care as it pertains to breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, and obtaining contraceptive care...

Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes is the leading cause of cervical cancer development. To this end several studies have focused on designing molecular assays for HPV genotyping, which are considered as the gold standard for the early diagnosis of HPV infection. Moreover, the tendency of HPV DNA to be integrated into the host chromosome is a determining event for cervical oncogenesis. Thus, the establishment of molecular techniques was promoted in order to investigate the physical status of the HPV DNA and the locus of viral insertion into the host chromosome...

PURPOSE: With the increasing use of simultaneous integrated boost in the treatment of cervical cancer, there is a need to anticipate the brachytherapy (BT) contribution at the level of the pathologic pelvic lymph nodes. This study aimed to report the dose delivered at their level during BT. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with pelvic nodal involvement and treated with a combination of chemoradiation followed by image-guided adaptive pulsed-dose-rate BT were selected...
