Impacts of exogenous microorganisms and tea polyphenols on acid production and conversion during in vitro colonic fermentation of konjac glucomannan (KGM) were assessed in this study. Colonic fermentation of KGM by the fecal extract of healthy adults resulted in a propionate-rich profile, as acetic, propionic, butyric and lactic acids production were 16.1, 13.0, 3.3 and 20.2 mmol/L, respectively. Inoculation of one of ten exogenous microorganisms in the fermentative systems increased acetic, propionic and butyric acids production by 50-230%, 9-190% and 110-350%, respectively, and also accelerated lactic acid conversion by 14-40%...

The lungs are the principal target organ in the infectious complications of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and this predisposition to infections is not the regional manifestation of systemic immunologic deficiency induced by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) only, because HIV also affects lung's own complex system of local defense mechanisms. It was demonstrated that pulmonary host defenses were compromised infection of alveolar macrophages with HIV and decreased production of solubile factors by lymphocytes derived from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was shown...

The aim of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of protein extracts from HaCaT cell line against bacterial strains, isolated from clinical materials, obtained from patients with clinical symptoms of acne (Propionibacterium acnes) and gas gangrene (Clostridium perfringens and Sterptococcus pyogenes). Reference strain of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 also was used. Protein extracts from cultured HaCaT cells were obtained by 3-fold freezing/defreezing cells in dry ice following by centrifugation and incubated with appropriate bacterial suspension (0...

Streptococcus faecalis, incubated in osmotically stabiliz medium in the presence of 1000 units of penicillin per milliliter, accumulated rather than extruded sodium; they accumulated much less potassium than control cells did. These changes were not due to binding of sodium by cell-wall fragments of cells treated with penicillin. Because penicillin had no effect on cation concentrations in stable protoplasts and nongrowing bacterial cells, this effect appeared to be related to the production of the penicillin-induced lesions of the cell wall...

The extracellular glycosyltransferase activity of Sterptococcus mutans GS-5 has been resolved into two non-overlapping fractions after gel filtration chromatography on Bio Gel A-15 columns. The activity eluting in the void volume, fraction A, was highly aggregated and synthesized both soluble and insoluble glucans. The activity retarded by the resin, fraction B, synthesized only soluble glucan. Almost all of the extracellular glucosyltransferase activity was eluted in the void volume when the cells were grown in Todd-Hewitt medium...
