Acute low back pain is one of the most frequent reason for an emergency or primary care physician visit. Up to 90% of all adults will experience an episode of back pain at some point during their lifetime. Although the majority of patients have uncomplicated benign presentation and 80-90% recover within 4 to 6 weeks, there is a small subset who has an underlying potential life-threatening etiology. Among them are aortic dissection, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, vertebral osteomyelitis, spinal epidural abscess and the cauda equina syndrome (CES)...

Herpesvirus infections are significant in the care of turtles and tortoises. Clinical signs range from unspecific symptoms, due to the variety of organ manifestations, to the "classical" picture of rhinitis-stomatitis. The presented case study showed the typical disease only with respect to clinical symptoms following hibernation, but lacks stomatitis, erosions or plaques in the oral mucosa. On the other hand, skin lesions on the extremeties, causative with herpesvirus infection, could be diagnosed. In this case study, various symptoms, sampling procedures and diagnostics using two different PCR methods are presented...

We studied bone lesion alterations in three patients with diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (DCL) by imaging exams (radiography and scintigraphy) and histopathology. Two patients had bone lesions of distal extremities of hands and feet, and one infiltrating plaques in the skin. The study was conducted at three specialized centers (Presidente Dutra Hospital/Nucleus of Tropical Pathology, UFMA-MA; Gonçalo Moniz Research Center-FIOCRUZ-BA; Laboratory of Pathology of Infectious Diseases (LIM-50), University of São Paulo, SP)...

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor (OFMT) is a relatively rare tumor, most of which occur in adults with preferential localization in subcutis or muscles of the extremeties. Although Schwannian or cartilage origin has been suggested, histogenesis of this tumor still is unclear. The authors present a 6-year-old girl with retroperitoneal OFMT showing paraspinal extension, who is alive and tumor free 9 years after excision. In the U.S., leg ulcers present a significant clinical problem, occurring at a rate of approximately 600,000 new cases per year. In most cases, the cause of ulceration is venous or arterial in nature. One uncommon but significant cause of leg ulcers is sqaumous cell carcinoma (SCC). Although the incidence of SCC is higher in white than black populations, blacks with SCC typically exhibit involvement of areas of the skin that are not chronically sun-exposed, especially the lower extremeties. Predisposing factors include burn scars, chronic infection or ulceration, and chronic discoid lupus erythematosus...

PURPOSE: Signs and symptoms of delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction (DHTR) may resemble those of vaso-occlusive crises in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The diagnosis of DHTR therefore presents a challenge to the clinician when treating such patients. The current study describes a patient with SCA and DHTR secondary to red cell anti-s antibody, manifesting as painful extremeties, severe hemolytic anemia, and acute oliguric renal failure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 17-year-old patient with homozygous hemoglobin S presented 8 days after partial exchange transfusions with severe anemia and signs and symptoms resembling vaso-occlusive crisis...

Hydromyelia in patients with myelomeningocele and Chiari-II malformation is a relatively frequent finding on MRI studies. However, not all children develop symptoms from the hydromyelia that requires treatment. Furthermore, treatment of hydromyelia in spina bifida patients is rather complex due to the associated malformations. The authors retrospectively analyzed 231 MRI studies carried out on spina bifida patients who presented neurological deterioration. Hydromyelia was found in 48.5% of the patients. Forty-five children with severe hydromyelia required treatment...
