Ferroptosis, a new type of cell death has been found to aggravate intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, little is known about the changes of gut microbiota and metabolites in intestinal I/R and the role of gut microbiota metabolites on ferroptosis-induced intestinal I/R injury. This study aimed to establish a mouse intestinal I/R model and ileum organoid hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) model to explore the changes of the gut microbiota and metabolites during intestinal I/R and protective ability of capsiate (CAT) against ferroptosis-dependent intestinal I/R injury...

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an aging-related loss of muscle mass and function, which induces numerous adverse outcomes. Capsaicin and capsiate, separately extracted from chilies and sweet peppers, have the potential to induce muscle hypertrophy via activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1. The present study aimed to investigate whether chili and sweet pepper consumption are related to sarcopenia in the elderly general population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 2,451 participants was performed...

While exercise training (ET) is an efficient strategy to manage obesity, it is recommended with a dietary plan to maximize the antiobesity functions owing to a compensational increase in energy intake. Capsiate is a notable bioactive compound for managing obesity owing to its capacity to increase energy expenditure. We aimed to examine whether the antiobesity effects of ET can be further enhanced by capsiate intake (CI) and determine its effects on resting energy expenditure and metabolic molecules. Mice were randomly divided into four groups ( n = 8 per group) and fed high-fat diet...

Obesity is a chronic disease derived from disequilibrium between energy intake and energy expenditure and evolving as a challenging epidemiological disease in the 21st century. It is urgently necessary to solve this issue by searching for effective strategies and safe drugs. Skeletal muscle could be a potential therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of obesity and its associated complications due to non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) function. Skeletal muscle NST is based dominantly on futile sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA) pump cycling that leads to a rise in cytosolic Ca2+ , increased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis and heat production...

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the anti-obesity effects of exercise training can be further enhanced by capsiate intake. Methods: 8-week-old male mice were divided into 3 groups (n = 8 per group): sedentary group (SED; nontrained), exercise-trained group (EXE) and exercisetrained group with 10 mg/kg of capsiate intake (EXE+CAP)...

Peppers are fruits with wide genetic variability and multiple ways of being consumed that hold a relevant position in the human diet. Nowadays, consumers are interested in new gastronomic experiences provided by pepper cultivars that present new shapes, colors, and flavors while preserving their bioactive compounds, such as their capsaicinoids and capsinoids. However, numerous changes take place during their development that may alter their biological properties. Therefore, this work evaluates the capsaicinoid and capsiate contents in two traditional varieties of ornamental peppers ("Filius Blue" and "Filius Green'") during fruit maturation...

Quantification, using an accurate analytical approach, of capsinoids and capsaicinoids was performed on three chili pepper ( Capsicum spp.) genotypes: "Chiltepı́n", "Tampiqueño 74", and "Bhut Jolokia" at various stages of fruit development. The accumulation of capsinoids, in all these peppers started between 10 to 20 days post-anthesis (dpa), increased and reached the highest capsinoid amount at 40 dpa, and then decreased until 60 dpa. Conversely, capsaicinoids could already be determined at 10 dpa in "Bhut Jolokia" and their accumulation pattern was different from that of the capsinoids in this genotype...

With raising prevalence of obesity, the regulation of human body fat is increasingly relevant. The modulation of fatty acid uptake by enterocytes represents a promising target for body weight maintenance. Recent results demonstrated that the trigeminal active compounds capsaicin, nonivamide, and trans -pellitorine dose-dependently reduce fatty acid uptake in differentiated Caco-2 cells as a model for the intestinal barrier. However, non-pungent alternatives have not been investigated and structural determinants for the modulation of intestinal fatty acid uptake have not been identified so far...

Apple latent spherical virus (ALSV) can infect a variety of crops, usually without inducing symptoms. Partial gene sequences can be introduced into ALSV vectors for the induction of virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). These features are beneficial for the estimation of gene functions in plants, with relatively concise experimental manipulations. Given that the infectability of chili peppers (Capsicum spp.) by ALSV was unknown, an ALSV infectivity test was performed on the highly pungent Capsicum chinense cultivar 'Habanero'...

Chili peppers are one of the most widely consumed spices worldwide. While ample studies have been carried out to examine the effect of capsaicin in carcinogenesis, the chemopreventive effect of other major components in chili pepper, including dihydrocapsaicin, capsiate, and capsanthin, is relatively unclear...

Recent studies have shown that aronia (black chokeberry) and haskap fruits (contain anthocyanins) have beneficial health effects in animals and humans. However, some reports have shown that anthocyanin is poorly absorbed in the small intestine. In this study, we compared the intestinal absorption of aronia and haskap anthocyanins by using rats with a ligated small intestinal loop and cannulated portal vein. Our results clearly showed that the intestinal absorption of aronia anthocyanins was significantly lower than that of haskap anthocyanins, suggesting that the intestinal absorption of anthocyanins is influenced by the glycoside type (galactoside or glucoside)...

Chili peppers exhibit antiobesity, anticancer, antidiabetic, and pain- and itch-relieving effects on animals and humans; these effects are due to capsaicin, which is the main pungent and biologically active component of pepper.
