In assisted reproduction, embryos derived from monopronucleated (1PN) zygotes are considered abnormal and unsuitable for clinical use. Outcomes of 1PN-derived embryos designated for preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) were analysed. These embryos, especially from intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), were found to have a low developmental potential; 1PN and 2PN day 5 blastocyst development for IVF was 14.8% versus 36.4% (P < 0.0001), and for ICSI, 6.6% versus 34.0% (P < 0.0001), respectively. With the use of comparative genomic hybridization or next-generation sequencing, PGS was successfully carried out for 74 IVF and 32 ICSI 1PN-derived blastocysts, revealing adjusted abnormality rates of 39...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency of pre-treatment in dyspermic males in IVF couples with a combination of micronutrients, for the purpose of improving the fertilization rate, the implantation rate and the outcome of the pregnancy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This controlled prospective clinical study was performed in two medically assisted reproduction centers. 59 males with mild oligo-astheno-teratospermia (OAT) were admitted to the study. All of them had a history of previous in vitro fertilization (IVF) attempts with female partners aged < 40 diagnosed having tubal or idiopathic infertility...

This multicenter cohort study on embryo assessment and outcome data from 11,744 IVF/ICSI cycles with 104,830 oocytes and 42,074 embryos, presents the effect of women's age on oocyte, zygote, embryo morphology and cleavage parameters, as well as cycle outcome measures corrected for confounding factors as center, partner's age and referral diagnosis. Cycle outcome data confirmed the well-known effect of women's age. Oocyte nuclear maturation and proportion of 2 pro-nuclear (2PN) zygotes were not affected by age, while a significant increase in 3PN zygotes was observed in both IVF and ICSI (p<0...

METHODS: In this retrospective study, 478 patients were enrolled from October 2012 to November 2014. The pituitary downregulation result, serum hormone levels, gonadotropin (Gn) dose during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, and outcome of IVF/ICSI-embryo transfer were compared between the two groups...

INTRODUCTION: Endometriomas are present in up to 44% of all women with endometriosis and have a detrimental effect on fertility. However, it is controversial whether endometriomas should be surgically removed before assisted reproduction technology (ART). Our purpose was to evaluate whether surgical stripping of endometriomas in subfertile women improves the chance of a live birth. Secondary outcomes were impact on ovarian reserve and pain. Material and methods We conducted a systematic review and metaanalysis with results reported in accordance to the PRISMA guidelines...

The aim of this chapter was to describe the standardized aseptic technology of permeable cryoprotectant-free vitrification of human spermatozoa in capillaries (for ICSI or IVF in microvolume). Spermatozoa, vitrified by this technology, are free from seminal plasma owing to swim-up procedure preceding vitrification and are free from permeable cryoprotectants. They are ready for further use immediately after warming without any additional treatment.

So far data on the effect of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) on the components of first trimester combined screening for Down syndrome are still controversial. A systematic search of the literature was performed in order to identify the effect of ART, particularly IVF and ICSI with fresh embryo transfer, on the nuchal translucency (NT), free β-hCG and PAPP-A measurements. Moreover, a meta-analysis and a descriptive graphical representation of the ratios between ART and spontaneous pregnancies (controls) values of median of the multiple of median (m0MOM) was performed...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the response to superovulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) in patients with unilateral endometriomas with diameter ≥5cm and in the contralateral healthy ovary. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected database included patients who underwent superovulation for IVF/ICSI cycles and had unoperated single unilateral endometrioma with diameter ≥5cm and healthy contralateral ovary. The primary outcome of the study was to compare the number of oocyte retrieved in the ovary with the endometrioma and the contralateral healthy ovary...

BACKGROUND: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as the most important factor to controlled implantation is one of the early embryonic signals in primates that is secreted by the embryo before its implantation. This study was designed to assess the effects of intrauterine injection of hCG before the embryo transfer in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycle on pregnancy rate in infertile patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized study was done on 100 infertile patients in two groups: intervention group received injection of 700 IU of intrauterine hCG 10 min before embryo transfer and control group did not receive hCG...

Although the in vitro fertilization-intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI) has been utilized widely, the management in patients with an autoimmune disease is still a challenge. The aim of this study was to demonstrate IVF-ICSI outcomes in infertile women with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). Patient data were collected from the cases registered from January 2006 until January 2014. A total of 6152 assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles were analyzed retrospectively in the Ankara Zekai Tahir Burak Women’s Health Education and Research Hospital...

BACKGROUND: The literature presents conflicting results on the epigenetic effect of in vitro fertilization (IVF) on the short-term and mid-term growth of children. These contradictory results may be related to the use of heterogeneous methodologies and non-longitudinal data. The goal of this study was to compare the body mass index (BMI) of children conceived via IVF and spontaneous conception (SC) children, using longitudinal data from birth to 5 years. METHODS: This study compared 118 singleton children born after in vitro fertilization, with or without intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), selected from a pre-existing single-center cohort to 320 SC children from the same geographic area...

BACKGROUND: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) occurs in 1% of pregnancies and is reported to be more common in in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) pregnancies. An abdominal ectopic pregnancy (AEP) is a rare form of EP, and there are few reports of an AEP after IVF/ICSI. In this case report, a rare case of AEP after frozen-thawed cycle of ICSI is presented. CASE PRESENTATION: After a frozen-thawed cycle of ICSI, the beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) level at 4 weeks 0 days of gestation was 3...

STUDY QUESTION: Is there a difference in mental development of children conceived by IVM in comparison to IVF or ICSI, independently, at the age of 2 years? SUMMARY ANSWER: No differences could be found in mental development of IVM children compared to IVF and IVM children compared to ICSI as well. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Only few retrospective or non-controlled studies addressed the health of IVM children and did not show a negative impact of the IVM procedure...
