The late neurologist and author, Oliver Sacks, published an insightful 1986 review of Marjorie Wallace's book, The Silent Twins, in the New York Times. Taking exception to his assertion about Sir Francis Galton, I wrote a letter to the Times' editor. The letter was unpublished, but it brought a wonderful response from Sacks himself that is reproduced and examined. Next, brief reviews of twin research concerning the vanishing twin syndrome (VTS), discordant sex in a monozygotic (MZ) twin pair, and multiple pregnancy outcomes from assisted reproductive technology (ART) are presented...

47,XYY syndrome is a sex chromosomal anomaly in men, which may be associated with infertility and has an incidence of 0.1% of male births. The clinical and paraclinical characteristics of men suffering from this anomaly have not been fully described. In this retrospective study, we present 37 cases of 47,XYY infertile men with sperm counts varying from normal to azoospermia, referred to the Genetics Laboratory at the Royan Institute, Iran. Thirteen individuals were mosaic and 24 non-mosaics. Non-mosaic patients were classified as azoospermic (nine cases) and normospermic/oligozoospermic men (15 cases)...

This review describes necrospermia, its diagnosis, causes and management. Sperm vitality is commonly assessed in the laboratory of reproductive biology, with the eosin test or with the hypo-osmotic swelling test. Necrospermia is defined by a percentage of living spermatozoa inferior to 58%, and can be related to male infertility. Several pathological mechanisms may be involved and can be classified either in testicular causes (hyperthyroidism, local hyperthermia, varicocele), or post-testicular causes (epididymal necrospermia, dysregulation of seminal plasma, adult polycystic kidney disease, vasectomy reversal, anti-sperm antibodies) or both (infection, toxic, age, spinal cord injury)...

BACKGROUND: Among subfertile couples undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART), pregnancy rates following frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) treatment cycles have historically been found to be lower than following embryo transfer undertaken two to five days following oocyte retrieval. Nevertheless, FET increases the cumulative pregnancy rate, reduces cost, is relatively simple to undertake and can be accomplished in a shorter time period than repeated in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles with fresh embryo transfer...

INTRODUCTION: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) currently helps many couples with male infertility. However, ICSI procedure may cause asynchronous sperm decondensation. This could introduce a risk for aneuploidy. The ICSI technique also could cause damage to the second meiotic spindle during injection and cause significantly abnormal pairing of chromosomes when compared with In vitro fertilization (IVF). In this study, we have examined whether ICSI has a higher incidence of aneuploidy when compared with IVF...

INTRODUCTION: The use of GnRH agonist (GnRHa) for final oocyte maturation trigger in oocyte donation and elective frozen embryo transfer cycles is well established due to lower ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) rates as compared to hCG trigger. A recent Cochrane meta-analysis concluded that GnRHa trigger was associated with reduced live birth rates (LBRs) in fresh autologous IVF cycles compared to hCG trigger. However, the evidence is not unequivocal, and recent trials have found encouraging reproductive outcomes among couples undergoing GnRHa trigger and individualized luteal LH activity support...

The use of intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has increased significantly worldwide, often chosen instead of in vitro fertilization (IVF), yet long-term health outcomes are unknown and health differences between ICSI and IVF conceptions have not been comprehensively assessed. A systematic review of health outcomes of ICSI-conceived offspring beyond the neonatal period compared to IVF-conceived offspring was carried out. PubMed, OVID Medline/Embase, Informit, Web of Science and Proquest databases were searched on 9 November 2016 for studies reporting on health outcomes in ICSI-conceived offspring beyond 28 days after birth...

BACKGROUND: The expression of the 5,10-methylentetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene in human oocytes and preimplantation embryos suggests that the MTHFR gene is involved in folliculogenesis and female reproduction. Considering the importance of the MTHFR gene on female reproduction, the aim of this study was to evalu- ate the influence of MTHFR C677T polymorphism on ovarian marker reserve, particularly serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, and ovarian response as well as clinical pregnancy rates after in vitro fertilization (IVF)/ intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)...

OBJECTIVE: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is commonly used during pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in vitro fertilization (IVF), aiming to eliminate the risk of contamination from extraneous sperm DNA. Recently, ICSI "overuse" in non-male infertility has been doubted, since it does not offer an advantage over IVF. Prompted by the aforementioned observations, we sought to assess the accuracy of IVF vs ICSI in PGD cases, as might be reflected by a difference in the prevalence of discarded embryos as a consequent of parental contamination...
