Woundcare Research for Appropriate Products (WRAP) is a novel collaboration WRAP between industry and clinicians, funded by the Engineering and Physical Research Sciences Council. WRAP objectives included the development and testing of methodologies to identify patients' and clinicians' needs with respect to wound dressings for exudate management. The management of exudate was the focus because it was demonstrated to be the pivotal problem for patients and clinicians in a study of malignant wounds, and is a recurring problem in other wound types...

Mrs B was referred to the Skin and Woundcare Department at the start of January 2002 with a chronic non-healing ulcer to her lower right leg proximal to the medial aspect of her right knee. The ulcer was diagnosed as pyoderma gangrenosum, a condition which Mrs B had suffered from previously. Assessment and management of this atypical ulcer are discussed. Once the progression of the lesion was halted, conservative treatment could be undertaken, and led to a successful outcome.

The essence of immersive virtual reality (VR) is the illusion it gives users that they are inside the computer-generated virtual environment. This unusually strong illusion is theorized to contribute to the successful pain reduction observed in burn patients who go into VR during woundcare (www.vrpain.com) and to successful VR exposure therapy for phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study demonstrated for the first time that subjects could experience a strong illusion of presence during an fMRI despite the constraints of the fMRI magnet bore (i...

Examination of the software design-learning relationship is mandatory if significant benefits are to be derived from the development and use of Interactive multimedia in nursing education. This article reports on the development and student evaluation of WoundCare: An Interactive Learning Program for Health Professionals (version 1.0a). Of particular interest to those involved in nursing education is the extent to which the learning activities incorporated in WoundCare promote "deep" rather than "surface" learning...

Authors treated five patients who suffered venomous snake-bite injury. Although these snakes are not native in Hungary, this kind of injury is estimated to be more frequent, because of the increasing number of the private collections and illegal import of these reptiles. The local and general symptoms, the therapeutic steps are summarised in this study considering the literature as well. Two patients did not show any systemic or local symptoms at the level of injury, they needed only short observation, and woundcare...

The use of digital wound images would allow remote consultation between patients, physicians, or other caregivers over the Internet. To evaluate the efficacy and validity of digital images for assessment of wounds, we compared the ability and reliability of surgeons to diagnose and make treatment suggestions using either digital or slide images of several types of wounds. Twenty-four wound images on 35-mm slides were selected for use in this study. Each slide image was digitized at 24-bit color with a resolution of 640 pixels horizontal by 425 pixels vertical, and stored as a JPEG file...
