The use of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) devices have gained prominence as an alternative to long-term anticoagulation therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke and high risk of bleeding. While these devices have shown efficacy in reducing stroke risk, there have been reported cases of embolization of the Watchman device. There are very few cases of successful percutaneous retrieval of embolized Watchman devices from the left ventricle (LV), as many of these cases require open heart surgery for safe removal...

Organoid generation from pluripotent stem cells is a cutting-edge technique that has created new possibilities for modelling human organs in vitro , as well as opening avenues for regenerative medicine. Here, we present a protocol for generating skin organoids (SKOs) from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) via direct embryoid body formation. This method provides a consistent start point for hiPSC differentiation, resulting in SKOs with complex skin architecture and appendages (e.g. hair follicles, sebaceous glands, etc...

AIM: To report the clinical outcomes of thoracoscopic left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) with the AtriClip PRO2 device (Atricure Inc, Mason, OH, USA). Stroke risk reduction with LAAO in patients with atrial fibrillation is now well-established. Many surgical and percutaneous techniques have been used, with varying rates of success. The percutaneous devices have had issues with procedural complications and peridevice flow. Thoracoscopic AtriClip offers an epicardial linear closure of the appendage at its ostium...

OBJECTIVES: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have lower left atrial (LA) strain, which is a predictor for LA function. Here, we evaluated the prognostic value of LA strain to predict the rhythm outcome in patients with persistent AF undergoing LA cryoablation concomitant to minimally invasive mitral valve repair. METHODS: Between 01/2016 and 12/2020, 72 patients with persistent AF underwent LA cryoablation during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. All patients received a complete LA lesion set and left atrial appendage (LAA) closure with a clip...

Molecular clock estimates suggest the origin of Annelida dates back to the Ediacaran period, which is in discordance with the first appearance of this taxon in the early Cambrian, as evidenced by the fossil records of stem-group and basally branching crown-group annelids. Using new material from the early Cambrian Guanshan biota (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4), we re-interpret Gaoloufangchaeta bifurcus Zhao, Li & Selden, 2023, as the earliest known errantian annelid. Gaoloufangchaeta has a prominent anterior end bearing three pairs of putatively sensory appendages and a pair of anterior eyes; a muscular eversible pharynx with papillae is identified...

The northern house gecko Hemidactylus flaviviridis exhibits appendage-specific responses to injuries. The autotomized tail regenerates, whereas the severed limb fails to regrow. Many site-specific cellular processes influence tail regeneration. Herein, we analyzed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition contrast in the lizard's amputated appendages (tail and limb). Morphological observations in the healing frame indicated the formation of regeneration blastema in the tail and scar formation in limb. Histology of the tail showed that epithelial cells closer to mesenchyme appeared less columnar and loosely packed, with little intercellular matrix...

BACKGROUND: In the last few years, percutaneous LAA occlusion (LAAO) has become a plausible alternative in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with contraindications to anticoagulation therapy. Nevertheless, the optimal antiplatelet strategy following percutaneous LAAO remains to be defined. METHODS: Studies comparing single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) versus dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) following LAAO were systematically searched and screened. The outcomes of interest were ischemic stroke, device-related thrombus (DRT) and major bleeding...

BACKGROUND: Understanding complex cardiac anatomy is essential for percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) closure. Conventional multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) are now supported by advanced 3D printing and virtual reality (VR) techniques for three-dimensional visualization of volumetric data sets. This study aimed to investigate their added value for LAA closure procedures. METHODS: Ten patients scheduled for interventional LAA closure were evaluated with MSCT and TEE...

Cardiac amyloidosis is caused by amyloid fibrils that deposit in the myocardial interstitium, causing restrictive cardiomyopathy and eventually death. The electromechanical, inflammatory, and autonomic changes due to amyloid deposition result in arrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation is by far the most common arrhythmia. The rate control strategy is generally poorly tolerated due to restrictive filling physiology and heart rate dependance, favoring adoption of the rhythm control strategy. Anticoagulation for stroke prophylaxis is warranted, irrespective of CHA2 DS2 -VASc score in patients with a favorable bleeding profile; data on left appendage closure devices are still insufficient...

The onset of atrial fibrillation (AF) has a direct association with left atrial appendage (LAA) function, as demonstrated by recent studies demonstrating the link between left atrial (LA) wall fibrosis, impaired contractility, and the development of AF. Non-valvular AF (NVAF) affects almost 30 million people worldwide, with this number expected to increase in the next 20 years. It is the main cause of ischemic stroke, with significant subsequent economic and social impact. Currently, the mainstay of stroke prevention in patients with NVAF is oral anticoagulation (OAC), which reduces the incidence of ischemic events at the stake of increased hemorrhagic events...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is widely accepted to be the most common sustained arrhythmia, with an increasing incidence over time. This is thought to be due to the aging population across the world. AF occurs when abnormal electrical foci result in disorganization of atrial depolarization, though the exact pathophysiology leading to these abnormal foci is not well understood. A range of interventions exist for AF - pharmacological therapies (anti-arrhythmic or negative chronotropic medications), cardioversion, or ablations to interrupt the abnormal conduction pathways...

Impatiens uliginosa is a plant of the Impatiens , with peculiar flowers. In this study, we combined morphogenesis and molecular biology to explore its development of flowers. An analysis of basic observational data and paraffin sectioning showed that it took approximately 13 d for the floral organs to differentiate. An analysis of the development of inflorescences and floral organs by scanning electron microscopy showed that the inflorescence of I. uliginosa is a spiral raceme. The floral organs differentiated in the following order: lateral sepals (Ls), posterior sepal (Ps), anterior sepals (As), anterior petal (Ap), lateral petals (Lp), stamens (St) and gynoecium (Gy)...

Heterotaxy syndrome (HS) occurs in developing embryos due to an inability to establish the normal anatomy, which manifests as abnormal symmetry and malposition of the thoracoabdominal viscera and vasculature, including cardiac and extracardiac anomalies. It is classified as right or left atrial isomerism. This classification depends on the atrial appendage morphology and the extracardiac defect associated with it. Right isomerism usually presents with right atrial appendages (RAA), asplenia, total anomalous pulmonary venous return, and severe pulmonary stenosis...

This study evaluated nationwide associations between concomitant left atrial appendage clip (LAAC) placement during cardiac surgery and postoperative outcomes. We identified 1,260,999 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting, valve, and aortic surgeries in the 2016-2020 Nationwide Readmissions Database and stratified by concomitant LAAC versus no-LAAC placement. Patients who underwent surgical ablation were excluded.
