INTRODUCTION: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by multiple pathologies in which sustained inflammatory activity leads to progressive tissue destruction and organ damage. One of the main proinflammatory cytokines playing a key role in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or SLE, is tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha. AREAS COVERED: The introduction of TNF-alpha inhibitors revolutionized the treatment of RA and other conditions including psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spodylitis...

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors, such as etanercept, infliximab, and adalimumab, bind to TNF-α and thereby act as anti-inflammatory agents. This group of drugs has been approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, ankylosing spodylitis, Crohn disease, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. We describe a 56-year-old woman who developed an erythematous pruritic rash on both arms-diagnosed as granuloma annulare by skin biopsy-approximately 22 months after initiating adalimumab for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis...

AIM: Our aim was to adapt and implement the evidence based recommendations for the management of ankylosing spodylitis (AS) of the "Assessments in AS" (ASAS) International Working Group together with the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) within the framework of a competence network (CN) in rheumatology in the German language area. METHODS: The ASAS/EULAR project calculated the effective size (ES), rate ratio, number of patients requiring treatment (number needed to treat, NNT) and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER)...

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a multisystemic disease in which pulmonary function is altered owing mainly to the restriction of chest wall involvement. A restrictive ventilatory defect has been extensively reported. This has been suggested to be a consequence of reduced mobility of the thoracic cage. Respiratory function in AS shows a typical restrictive pattern but pulmonary compliance, diffusion capacity, and arterial blood gases are normal. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to compare pulmonary function tests (PFT), respiratory muscle strength (MIP, MEP) and endurance (MVV) in early and late AS...

Serum antibody levels against T mycoplasmas (Ureaplasma urealyticum) were determined by the metabolic inhibition method in several populations. A higher prevalence of antibody was found in Haida Indians and Bella Coola Indians than in blood donors, patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and patients attending a VD clinic. Antibody levels did not correlate with the presence of spodylitis or the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27, although both these Indian populations have a high prevalence of spondylitis and HLA-B27...
