Cattle and sheep horns have the potential to grow in such a way that the horn bends toward the animal's head and, if left untreated, may penetrate the skin, causing pressure, pain, and suffering. According to the Swedish Animal Welfare Act, animals must be looked after in a way that prevents ingrown horns; otherwise, the person responsible for the animal may be prosecuted. Here, we present a review of 32 legal cases that occurred in Sweden between 2008 and 2022 for which the charge involved horn-related anomalies in cattle or sheep...

AIM: To examine and map alcohol consumption in children and adolescents with chronic pain (CP). METHOD: A scoping review of international databases (CINAHL, WOS, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Embase, and MEDLINE) and grey literature was conducted between September 2022 and February 2023. Documents addressing the relationship between alcohol consumption and CP in children and adolescents, published in English and Spanish between 2012 and 2023, were included. Those papers with a population suffering from CD derived from neurodegenerative diseases, chronic infectious diseases or cognitive impairment were excluded...

Digitalization in cardiovascular emergencies is rapidly evolving, analogous to the development in medicine, driven by the increasingly broader availability of digital structures and improved networks, electronic health records and the interconnectivity of systems. The potential use of digital health in patients with acute chest pain starts even in the prehospital phase with the transmission of a digital electrocardiogram (ECG) as well as telemedical support and digital emergency management, which facilitate optimization of the rescue pathways and reduce critical time intervals...

Methadone is used as an agent for chronic pain and management of opioid use disorder. While similar pharmacologically to other opioids, methadone does have unique characteristics, including long half-life, low cost, and high oral bioavailability. While advantageous in some ways, methadone is associated with unique adverse effects not seen with other opioids (ie, hypoglycemia). In this case, we describe a patient in his late-60s with opioid use disorder on chronic methadone who presents with symptoms of generalized weakness, fatigue, and decreased appetite for 2 days...

The present article describes the protocol of a mixed-methods study (an observational cohort design and focus groups), aimed to examine neuropsychological functioning and other biopsychosocial outcomes, therapeutic adherence and unmet care needs in paediatric population undergoing solid organ or allogeneic hematopoietic transplant during the pre- and post-transplant phases. Following a multi-method/multi-source approach, neuropsychological domains will be comprehensively measured with objective tests (SDMT, K-CPT 2/CPT 3, TAVECI/TAVEC, WISC-V/WAIS-IV Vocabulary and Digit Span subtests, Verbal Fluency tests, Stroop, ROCF, and TONI-4); ecological executive functioning, affective and behavioral domains, pain intensity/interference, sleep quality and therapeutic adherence will be assessed through questionnaires (parent/legal guardians-reported: BRIEF-2 and BASC-3; and self-reported: BASC-3, BPI, PROMIS, AIQ and SMAQ); and blood levels of prescribed drugs will be taken from each patient's medical history...

Isolated splenic peliosis is an extremely rare condition characterized by the presence of multiple blood-filled cavities, occasionally resulting in non-traumatic splenic rupture with fatal bleeding. In our case, a 64-year-old man was brought by ambulance due to weakness and abdominal pain without nausea or febrility. On clinical examination, the patient was sensitive to palpation with significant tenderness over the abdomen but no associated features of peritonitis. He collapsed during the imaging examination and became unconscious and asystolic...

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis, a chronic noncancerous gynecologic condition commonly characterized by disruptive physical and psychosocial symptoms, can be disabling. Individuals in the United States with endometriosis who are unable to work before retirement age can apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Given the multi-step process of disability review, it is important to better understand how disability decisions are made. This study aimed to examine approaches and rationales of U...

Amidst broad changes to the somatic disorder diagnoses, DSM-IV pain disorder was absorbed into DSM-5's somatic symptom disorder (SSD) as a specifier. However, clinical research testing of its use for the chronic pain population has been limited and its utility remains inconclusive. Using the exemplar of fibromyalgia, this article evaluates the validity, reliability, clinical utility, and acceptability of the SSD pain specifier. The diagnosis appears to have moderate validity but low specificity for the fibromyalgia population...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cannabis use among aging Americans continues to increase. We examine correlates of cannabis use including attitudes, state of residence, health status and service use. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the 2018 Health and Retirement Study Cannabis module completed by 1,372 respondents aged 50 and older, we distinguished current cannabis users from those who have never used or have some prior use. We linked 2018 and 2016 core HRS data and used multinomial regressions to identify associations among current use, attitudes, place of residence, as well as current (2018) and past (2016) medical conditions, pain and sleep issues...

Cannabis is a plant that is cultivated worldwide, and its use is internationally regulated, but some countries have been regulating its medicinal, social, and industrial uses. This plant must have arrived in Peru during the Spanish conquest and remains widely cultivated illicitly or informally to this day. However, new regulations are currently being proposed to allow its legal commercialization for medicinal purposes. Cannabis contains specific metabolites known as cannabinoids, some of which have clinically demonstrated therapeutic effects...

In this study, we propose a visualization technique to explore and visualize concept hierarchies generated from a textbook in the legal domain. Through a human-centered design process, we developed a tool that allows users to effectively navigate through and explore complex hierarchical concepts in three kinds of traversal techniques: top-down, middle-out, and bottom-up. Our concept hierarchies offer an overview over a given domain, with increasing level of detail toward the bottom of the hierarchy which is consisting of entities...

Appendiceal anomalies, particularly double appendices, are rare and mainly detected during non-appendiceal surgery in adults. Misrecognizing them can have serious consequences, both clinically and legally. It is critical that surgeons pay attention to the anatomical variations of the vermiform appendix, and always consider the possibility of duplicated appendix when diagnosing a right iliac fossa pain. Misdiagnosis can lead to life-threatening medical complications for the patient, with medico-legal implications...

Foreign body ingestion in children is a frequent cause for medical consultation. Although most foreign bodies are spontaneously eliminated from the gastrointestinal tract, life-threatening complications such as gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation can occur. We report the case of a 6-year-old boy who died 2 days after the onset of nausea and abdominal pain, with no foreign body ingestion witnessed or reported in the previous days. Autopsy showed a diffuse peritonitis and a perforation of the transverse colon caused by three high-powered magnets stacked together, and attached to the outer stomach wall via a fourth magnet located in the stomach...

Despite uncertain efficacy, cannabinoids and derived products are becoming increasingly used in the field of palliative care for oncologic patients. Cannabinoids chiefly include psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and nonpsychoactive cannabidiol (CBD). Use of and research interest in THC, CBD, and combination THC/CBD products have increased in recent years, particularly after the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 made cannabis plants with <0.3% THC no longer controlled substances, and many states recently legalized THC use altogether...

Most bee stings are not life-threatening. Bee venom often causes local, mild allergic reactions in people, but even a single bee sting may induce a fatal anaphylactic reaction. Usually, anaphylactic reaction is the cause of death, but, when a child suffers multiple stings (more than 30), direct toxicity of venom can also be fatal. A three-year-old male child was brought to the hospital with pain, swelling and redness at the sting sites. He had more than 35 stings at various sites over his face, on his tongue and over his body...

How are ethics articulated in the organization of migrants' detention in France? While state agents enjoy discretionary power, it is the third sector that claims legal knowledge and good practice, exposing an unresisting and reverent attitude towards the 'rule of law'. This legalistic gaze on the state attests to the impasse in questioning (the moral grounds of) laws and flaunting intense emotions on a daily basis, an expression of their moral dilemma. In doing so, police officers, legal practitioners and other service providers display contrasting ideological disapproval but practical compliance, creating an environment infused with melancholy...
