INTRODUCTION: Despite seeing widespread usage worldwide, adaptive traffic control systems have experienced relatively little use in the United States. Of the systems used, the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) is the most popular in America. Safety benefits of these systems are not as well understood nor as commonly documented. METHOD: This study investigates the safety benefits of adaptive traffic control systems by using the large SCATS-based system in Oakland County, MI known as FAST-TRAC...

To highlight the spatio-temporal variability of the food web structure of hydrothermal vent fauna from newly-opened habitat, a series of Titanium Ring for Alvinellid Colonization devices (TRACs) was deployed at TICA site on the East Pacific Rise in 2006. This experiment was conducted for periods of 4 days, 13 days and one month and deployments were aligned along a gradient from the basaltic bottom to the vent openings. δ(13)C values of colonists revealed a narrower range of carbon sources in proximity to vent openings in Alvinella pompejana habitat than in Tevnia jerichonana habitat, separated by a distance of four meters...

Chromosomal abnormalities, like deletions, amplifications, inversions or translocations, are recurrent features in haematological malignancies. However, the precise molecular breakpoints are frequently not determined. Here we describe a rapid analysis of genetic imbalances combining fine tiling comparative genomic hybridization (FT-CGH) and ligation-mediated PCR (LM-PCR). We clarified an inv(14)(q11q32) in a case of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia with a breakpoint in the TRA/D in 68% of cells detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization...

It has been well established that state-of-the-art wavelet image coders outperform block transform image coders in the rate-distortion (R-D) sense by a wide margin. Wavelet-based JPEG2000 is emerging as the new high-performance international standard for still image compression. An often asked question is: how much of the coding improvement is due to the transform and how much is due to the encoding strategy? Current block transform coders such as JPEG suffer from poor context modeling and fail to take full advantage of correlation in both space and frequency sense...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

OBJECTIVE: To assess the validity of a new hand-held indirect calorimeter [MedGem (MG)] in the determination of resting energy expenditure (REE; kilocalories per day) in children. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: One hundred male (n = 54) and female (n = 46) children (10.6 +/- 3.2 years, 43.9 +/- 19.0 kg, 146.1 +/- 18.8 cm, 19.6 +/- 4.9 kg/m(2)) participated. Children arrived at the University of Oklahoma body composition laboratory between 5:30 am and 6:15 am after an overnight fast...

We describe a novel, multiplexed method for focused transcript analysis of tens to hundreds of genes. In this method TRAC (transcript analysis with aid of affinity capture) mRNA targets, a set of amplifiable detection probes of distinct sizes and biotinylated oligo(dT) capture probe are hybridized in solution. The formed sandwich hybrids are collected on magnetic streptavidin-coated microparticles and washed. The hybridized probes are eluted, optionally amplified by a PCR using a universal primer pair and detected with laser-induced fluorescence and capillary electrophoresis...

OBJECTIVES: To perform a bibliographic review of the main features of cryotherapy as a therapeutic option in the monagemente of prostate cancer and to report our initial experience. METHODS: We employed the Endocare Fast-Trac system (Medipro) with 2.4 mm needles implanted in a single maneouvre without rack or transrectal U.S. transducer support. Two cycles of freezing thawing were employed, with apex backward movement when necessary. Freezing cycle duration was between 7-10 minutes or more...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
T K Tsuetaki, C M Schor
Previous work indicates that tonic adapters of accommodation and vergence have indirect effects on accommodative vergence and vergence accommodation and that these crosslink responses interact with one another to produce clear and single vision. Clinical measurements of tonic accommodation, tonic vergence, vergence accommodation (CA/C ratio), and accommodative vergence (AC/A ratio) are therefore of value in determining possible binocular vision abnormalities. Currently, clinical methods are only available for measuring the tonic vergence (phoria) and the AC/A ratio...
