BACKGROUND: Whereas tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) can lead to renal adverse events, tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) has a more favorable renal safety profile. However, the impact of replacing TDF with TAF on renal function and liver parameters among HIV/hepatitis B virus (HBV)-coinfected individuals with renal dysfunction remains unclear. METHODS: We included all participants from the Swiss HIV Cohort Study with an HIV/HBV coinfection who switched from TDF to TAF and had an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <90 mL/min/1...

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide. The Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway participates in the development and progression of DN. Among the different mechanisms involved in JAK/STAT negative regulation, the family of suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins has been proposed as a new target for DN. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of SOCS1 mimetic peptide in a mouse model of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) with progressive DN...

AIMS: Inhibition of enteropeptidase, a gut restricted serine protease regulating protein digestion, improves obesity and diabetes in animal models. However, the effects of inhibiting enteropeptidase on kidney function are largely unknown. Here, we examined the effects of an enteropeptidase inhibitor, SCO-792, on kidney parameters in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pharmacological effects of SCO-792 were evaluated in Wistar fatty (WF) rats, a rat model of diabetic kidney disease (DKD)...

A study of 959 black and white women shows that the normal range for 24-h urine calcium excretion in white women is 30-300 mg and 10-285 mg in black women. Clinical laboratories use a normal range for 24-h urine calcium excretion of 100-300 mg; there is a need for them to update their age- and race-specific ranges. INTRODUCTION: Recommendations for a normal range for 24-h urine calcium vary from a low of 50 mg to a high of 400 mg; most "laboratory normal ranges" based on older literature are incorrect...

BACKGROUND: The European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) Guidelines cover key aspects of HIV management with major updates every two years. GUIDELINE HIGHLIGHTS: The 2019 Guidelines were extended with a new section focusing on drug-drug interactions and other prescribing issues in people living with HIV (PLWH). The recommendations for treatment-naïve PLWH were updated with four preferred regimens favouring unboosted integrase inhibitors. A two-drug regimen with dolutegravir and lamivudine, and a three-drug regimen including doravirine were also added to the recommended initial regimens...

Qualitative and quantitative measurement of urine protein excretion is one of the most common tests performed during pregnancy. For more than 100 years, proteinuria was necessary for the diagnosis of preeclampsia, but recent guidelines recommend that proteinuria is sufficient but not necessary for the diagnosis. Still, in clinical practice, most patients with gestational hypertension will be diagnosed as having preeclampsia based on the presence of proteinuria. Although the reference standard for measuring urinary protein excretion is a 24-hour urine collection, spot urine protein-to-creatinine ratio is a reasonable "rule-out" test for proteinuria...

Thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy characterised by microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopaenia and organ ischaemia. TTP is caused by a severe functional deficiency of ADAMTS13 activity. We describe a 10-year-old girl presenting anaemia and thrombocytopaenia with schistocytes. Urine protein to creatinine ratio was within nephrotic range. ADAMTS13 activity was 0%, and no anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies were found. A renal biopsy showed deposits of IgG, C3 and C1q in the capillary membrane, compatible with class V lupus nephritis...

Methods: This retrospective study included identical twins with Alport syndrome who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were admitted to Peking University First Hospital from January 2000 to March 2019. Their clinical data and urinary epidermal growth factor (uEGF) level were extracted from the on-line registry system of hereditary kidney diseases, and analyzed retrospectively. Hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are serious interrelated public health problems. Despite the monitoring and control of high blood pressure, symptoms of CKD are not usually apparent in its early stages. Previously, we reported the utility of urinary vanin-1 as an early biomarker of kidney injury in spontaneously hypertensive rats, but it remains unknown whether urinary vanin-1 is associated with CKD in humans. In this study, we estimated associations between urinary vanin-1 and parameters of kidney function in a cross-sectional study of hypertensive patients...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common disease in elderly dogs. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a dietary supplement containing calcium carbonate, calcium-lactate gluconate, chitosan and sodium bicarbonate in dogs with IRIS stage 3 of CKD. Twenty dogs were enrolled in the study, ten were administered the new dietary supplementation for 180 days (T group) while the others were used as control group (C group). Haematologic, biochemical and urinalysis were performed every 30 days. A significant reduction in the T group compared to the C group in serum phosphorus level and increase in serum bicarbonate and ionized calcium values were recorded...

The increased prevalence of renal dysfunction and chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the high costs and poor outcomes of treatment are a significant health issue. The consequence of chronic high blood pressure is the increased prevalence of target organ end-stage renal disease, which has been proven to be a strong independent risk factor for adverse cardiovascular disease. A previous study showed that kefir products have anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertensive activities and immunological modulation functions...

PURPOSE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), however prevalence in obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) is not known. This study sought to compare prevalence of CKD in OHS and equally obese OSA patients with comparable apnoea hypopnoea indexes (AHI), and secondarily examine the impact of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy on CKD parameters. METHODS: Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) and spot urine protein creatinine ratio (PCR) were obtained in patients with OHS (Partial pressure of carbon dioxide, PaCO2 > 45 mmHg) and OSA (AHI > 20 events per hour, PaCO2 < 45 mmHg) with a body mass index (BMI) > 40 kg/m2 ...

We assessed the association between biomarker changes after contrast angiography with contrast-associated AKI and 90-day major adverse kidney events and death. OBJECTIVE: Most of the kidney dysfunction in HIV positive children receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) is attributed to tenofovir. There is a paucity of data on kidney dysfunction in tenofovir-naïve children. The primary objective was to know the point prevalence of albuminuria and β2-microglobulinuria in HIV infected children aged 3-18 years receiving ART. Albuminuria and β2-microglobulinuria were used as surrogates for glomerular and tubular dysfunction respectively. The secondary objective was to determine their predictors...

Endotoxemia-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical condition that lacks effective treatments. Elabela (ELA) is a recently discovered kidney peptide hormone, encoded by the gene apela, and has been reported to improve cardio-renal outcomes in sepsis. However, ELA is a small peptide and is largely unsuitable for clinical use because of its short in vivo half-life. In the present study, we evaluated the potential renoprotective effects of a long-acting constant fragment (Fc)-ELA fusion protein in liposaccharide (LPS)-induced AKI in mice...
