Resveratrol (Res) was previously reported to be capable of lowering plasma TC and LDL-C. The mechanism behind Res is not clearly understood, although it is presumed to have an effect on bile acid metabolism in the liver: a significant way in eliminating cholesterol from the body. As one of the major metabolites of Res in the liver, resveratrol glucuronides (Gres) is suspected to also contribute to the overall cholestrol-lowering activity of Res, which needs to be studied. In this research, when HepG2 steatosis hepatic cells were treated with Res and Gres at different concentration levels, Res and Gres showed similar activity in lowering cellular TC content...

Long-circulating liposome is an effective formulation in field of cancer treatment. However, high expenditure of formulation and high dose of cholesterol severely restrict its application. In this paper, we developed a method by grafting polyethylene glycol 2000 on β-sitosterol succinic anhydride ester to obtain relatively cheap polyethylene glycol-β-sitosterol conjugates, which were used to prepare long-circulating liposome without cholesterol. Gambogic acid which is an effective antitumor ingredient with very short half-life, was used as a model drug to prepare long-circulating liposome in this research...

In the current study we aimed at developing a vaccine delivery/adjuvant system to enhance anti-tumor immunity against the natural multi-epitope HER2/Neu-derived P5 peptide. Polyriboinosinic: polyribocytidylic acid [Poly (I:C)] is a strong immunoadjuvant able to enhance specific antitumor immunity induced by peptide-based vaccines. Nevertheless, delivering the peptide and adjuvant intracellularly into their target site remains a challenging issue. We hypothesized this barrier could be overcome through the use of a cationic nanoliposome carrier system which can carry and protect the antigen and adjuvant in the extracellular environment and augment the induction of antitumor immunity...

AIMS: The growing prevalence of obesity and its related metabolic disorders in adolescents shows the necessity of urgent focus on the related factors. Adipocytes secretions and their pro- or anti-inflammatory roles play effective roles in adipocytes metabolism. We assessed the relation between adiponectin, chemerin and lipid profile in hit phase of life. METHODS: This case-control study conducted on 78 adolescent girls, divided based on BMI percentile. Serum chemerin, adiponectin, lipid profile and body fat mass were measured...

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicines with anti-diabetic effects are considered suitable supplements to treat diabetes. Among medicinal herbs, Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni is famous for its sweet taste and beneficial effect in regulation of glucose. However, little is known about the exact mechanism of stevia in pancreatic tissue. Therefore, this study investigated the possible effects of stevia on pancreas in managing hyperglycemia seen in streptozotocin-induced Sprague-Dawley rats. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups including normoglycemic, diabetic and two more diabetic groups in which, one was treated with aquatic extract of stevia (400 mg/kg) and the other with pioglitazone (10 mg/kg) for the period of 28 days...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Familial hypercholesterolemia is a frequent genetic disorder characterized by elevated LDL-cholestrol and premature coronary heart disease. Familial hypercholesterolemia remains largely underdiagnosed in the general population and for many patients the initial clinical manifestation is acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Furthermore, many missed diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia can also occur during hospitalization for ACS. In this review, we aim to discuss the identification and prognosis of familial hypercholesterolemia after hospitalization for ACS...

BACKGROUND: Regular exercise prevents and regresses atherosclerosis by improving lipid metabolism and antioxidant defenses. Exercise ameliorates the reverse cholesterol transport (RCT), an antiatherogenic system that drives cholesterol from arterial macrophages to the liver for excretion into bile and feces. In this study we analyzed the role of aerobic exercise on the in vivo RCT and expression of genes and proteins involved in lipid flux and inflammation in peritoneal macrophages, aortic arch and liver from wild type mice...

All (+)RNA viruses replicate on distinct membranous domains; however, how they induce and maintain their unique lipid composition is largely unknown. Two recent studies reveal that enteroviruses harness the PI4P-cholestrol exchange cycle driven by OSBP1 protein and PI4 kinase(s), and that blocking the dynamic lipid flow inhibits virus replication.

Cholesterol emboli syndrome is due to dislodgment of cholesterol crystals from the atherosclerotic plaques lining the walls of major arteries resulting in an occlusion of small arteries. We describe a case of severe cutaneous and renal cholesterol emboli syndrome following coronary angiography showing our observation that this syndrome is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed and that a better evaluation of risks factors in patients undergoing invasive procedures could prevent this severe complication.

Cholesterol granuloma of the breast is an unusual non-neoplastic condition which frequently resembles malignancy clinically as well as radiologically. We herein report a case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with a lump in the upper outer quadrant of right breast. Physical examination and ultrasonography strongly suggested a carcinomatous lesion, but histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis to be cholestrol granulomas. This article highlights the perplexing clinical presentation of cholesterol granulomas and affirms the role of histopathological examination in diagnosing these lesions correctly...
