PURPOSE: Domperidone is thought to accelerate gastric emptying via D2 receptor antagonism at the gastro-oesophageal and gastro-duodenal junctions. Listed in the BNF as a prokinetic anti-emetic, it has been used in video capsule endoscopy (VCE) to accelerate capsule delivery to the small intestine. We audited VCEs performed at UHCW from 2011, when as standard practice, domperidone was given pre-VCE, to 2012, after its discontinuation due to doubts about its effectiveness. METHODS: Thirty-one patients received oral domperidone 20 mg pre-VCE...

Knowledge of gamete quality is a prerequisite for developing techniques to fertilize eggs and rear offspring for hatchery production. Our objective was to develop assisted reproductive techniques, via hormonal induction of final oocyte maturation (FOM), for Longspine scraper, Capoeta trutta. Fish were administered injections of salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue containing anti-dopaminergic drug (Ovaprim™) or saline (control). Effects of Ovaprim on induction of ovulation, gamete quality, embryonic development, and larval survival were later examined with serum steroid hormone levels and ovarian histology...

Belly dancer's dyskinesia (BDD) is an extremely rare manifestation consisting of involuntary and repetitive rhythmic movements of the abdominal wall. These movements cannot be voluntarily suppressed but may be influenced by respiratory maneuvers. Investigations such as spinal cord and abdominal imaging usually fail to reveal any local abnormalities to explain the movement disorder. A 23-year-old male presented with sudden onset of undulating movements of the abdominal wall for the last two months after he took domperidone...

We present a case of domperidone withdrawal in a woman using the medication as a galactagogue. Our primary goal is to increase the literature available to providers who work with women who are breastfeeding. We evaluated a woman presenting to our reproductive psychiatry clinic for consultation regarding anxiety and agitation in the context of domperidone discontinuation. We evaluated the available literature regarding domperidone as a galactagogue, as well as the literature regarding adverse effects. The patient presented with withdrawal symptoms after gradual taper and discontinuation of domperidone...

BACKGROUND: Lubiprostone is effective for patients with chronic constipation. This agent sometimes causes upper gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, which is one of the chief reasons for discontinuation. However, the etiology of and strategy against bothersome gastrointestinal symptoms of lubiprostone remain unclear. AIMS: The goal of this study was to investigate the influence of lubiprostone on the gastric-emptying profile of healthy adults. The effect of domperidone on gastric emptying and gastrointestinal symptoms after lubiprostone administration were also assessed...

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a non-organic gastrointestinal disorder that has a marked negative impact on quality of life. Compared with conventional pharmacological therapies, the traditional Chinese medicine weikangning (WKN) is a safe and effective treatment for FD. The present study aimed to determine the molecular mechanisms underlying the efficacy of WKN. The effect of different concentrations of WKN on the proliferation of the human gastric mucosal epithelial cell line GES-1 was assessed. The optimal WKN concentration to promote cell proliferation was determined, and this concentration was used to examine the effect of WKN compared with a domperidone-treated positive control group on the antioxidant capacity of GES-1 cells...

Vomiting is a common problem in children for which parents seek health care consultation. It has a varied etiology encompassing many organ systems, ranging from a benign physiological behavior to a life-threatening systemic disease. Most often, it is benign and self-limiting. Infections within and outside the gastrointestinal tract are the commonest causes. A good history and meticulous physical examination can discern the cause and help in delineating the benign cause from the sinister. Red flags include unstable vital signs, acidotic breathing, presence of bile or blood stained vomitus, features of gastrointestinal (GI) obstruction, encephalopathy and papilledema...

Prokinetics for functional dyspepsia (FD) have relatively higher number needed to treat values. Acupuncture and related therapies could be used as add-on or alternative. An overview of systematic reviews (SRs) and network meta-analyses (NMA) were performed to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of different acupuncture and related therapies. We conducted a comprehensive literature search for SRs of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in eight international and Chinese databases. Data from eligible RCTs were extracted for random effect pairwise meta-analyses...
