The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of mid-cycle administration of Ulipristal acetate (UPA) on gene expression in endometrial biopsies taken during the receptive phase of the cycle. Fourteen healthy menstruating women were studied during 14 control non-treated and 12 treated cycles with a single dose of 30 mg UPA when follicle diameter reached 20 mm. Ovulation in both treated and control cycles was confirmed by serial determinations of serum LH, progesterone and vaginal ultrasound. An endometrial biopsy at day LH+7, in each cycle, was taken for RNA microarray and qPCR analysis or prepared for histological and immunohistochemistry studies...

BACKGROUND: To limit the potential short and long-term morbidity of lymphadenectomy, sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy has been proposed for endometrial cancer. The principle of SLN biopsy relies on removal of a small number of lymph nodes that are the first drainage basins from a tumor and thus the most likely to harbor tumor cells. While the procedure may reduce morbidity, efficacy data is limited and little is known about how commonly the procedure is performed. OBJECTIVE: We examined the patterns and predictors of use of SLN biopsy and outcomes of the procedure in women with endometrial cancer who underwent hysterectomy...

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare neoplasm of the cervix. The importance of distinguishing this undifferentiated carcinoma with a predominant lymphocytic infiltrate lies in the fact that despite being poorly differentiated they have a better prognosis. The diagnosis however becomes more challenging when the pathologist is provided with a small cervical biopsy or a Papanicolaou smear. While the reports describing histology and their relation to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are many, there are only few case reports describing the cytology of these tumors...

Endometriosis involving the uterine cervix is a rare condition that can lead to diagnostic errors in the interpretation of Pap smear. We report the case of a 41-year-old patient in whom the initial Pap smear revealed three-dimensional clusters of glandular cells with elongated nuclei, occasional mitosis, and atypia, which was interpreted as atypical glandular cells, not otherwise specified (NOS). The patient was taken to colposcopy and endocervical biopsy. Colposcopy was normal and the biopsy presented glands with elongated nuclei and surrounded by endometrial stroma admixed with normal endocervical glands...

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of functional endometrial glands and stroma outside of the uterine cavity. It affects 7-10% of women of reproductive age and up to 50% of women with infertility. The current gold standard for the diagnosis combines laparoscopic evaluation and biopsy of the visualized lesions. However, laparoscopy requires general anesthesia and developed surgical skills and it has a high procedural cost...

Endometriosis is frequently associated with infertility and it is believed that the impairment of endometrial receptivity may be one of the mechanisms involved in this condition. Pinopodes are endometrial cycle-dependent structures that seem to participate in embryo implantation, and alterations in their presence and/or morphology during the window of implantation could affect the endometrial receptivity and be involved in the disease-related infertility. However, the data on pinopodes in these women are scarce and inconclusive...

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women, involving hyperandrogenaemia and insulin resistance. Treatment options include dexamethasone, as well as the off-label use of metformin. To evaluate the impact of those drugs on cyclic changes in endometrial development, we tested possible effects of metformin and dexamethasone on endometrial stromal cells decidualisation, proliferation, and gene regulation in a hyperandrogenaemic microenvironment in vitro...

A 39-year-old woman underwent right colectomy for type-3 transverse colon cancer, which was histologically identified as well-differentiated stage II A adenocarcinoma with a mucinous component and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. The patient was suspected of having Lynch syndrome(LS)since she fulfilled 2 of the revised Bethesda criteria, even though there was no family history of LS. Twelve months after colectomy, abdominal CT revealed thickening of the uterine endometrium. Histopathological examination of biopsy specimens revealed well-differentiated endometrioid carcinoma...

Exosomes and microvesicles are extracellular vesicles released from cells and can contain lipids, miRNAs and proteins that affect cells at distant sites. Recently, microvesicles containing miRNA have been implicated in uterine microenvironment of pigs, a species with unique epitheliochorial (non-invasive) placentation. Here we report a novel role of conceptus-derived exosomes/microvesicles (hereafter referred to as extracellular vesicles; EVs) in embryo-endometrial cross-talk. We also demonstrate the stimulatory effects of EVs (PTr2-Exo) derived from porcine trophectoderm-cells on various biological processes including the proliferation of maternal endothelial cells (PAOEC), potentially promoting angiogenesis...
