Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease and nuclear receptors play a crucial role in mediating the inflammatory response. In endometrial stromal cells (ESC), nuclear receptors expression can be influenced by the local environment. Progestins are first-line, on-label treatments of endometriosis that may have direct effects on endometriotic lesions through these nuclear receptors. Therefore, we investigated whether there was an association between nuclear receptors expression and the influence of progestins on inflammatory cytokines production in a preliminary, in vitro study with primary cultures...

The study postulated that differential nutritional management during the early lactation period would be reflected in endometrial expression of genes related to embryo growth at the end of the voluntary waiting period. Thus, the effect of the combined use of total mixed ration (TMR) and grazing under different herbage allowances during the first 75 days post-partum (DPP) on endometrial gene expression was evaluated in primiparous dairy cows. Cows were blocked by body weight, age and body condition score and randomly assigned to three grazing treatments: high (HA, 30 kg DM per cow per day), medium (MA, 15 kg DM per cow per day) and low (LA, 7...

AIM: Oxidative stress and impaired antioxidative system are implicated in the development of many disease states including gynecological diseases. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the oxidative-antioxidative status in endometrium of patients diagnosed with benign gynecological disorders. METHODS: Samples of endometria and blood were obtained from 65 patients admitted to our center for abnormal uterine bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding. Endometrial biopsy was performed for the evaluation of histopathology and oxidative-antioxidative status in endometrial tissue...

STUDY QUESTION: Is implantation failure following ART associated with a perturbed decidual response in endometrial stromal cells (EnSCs)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Dynamic changes in the secretome of decidualizing EnSCs underpin the transition of a hostile to a supportive endometrial microenvironment for embryo implantation; perturbation in this transitional pathway prior to ART is associated with implantation failure. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Implantation is the rate-limiting step in ART, although the contribution of an aberrant endometrial microenvironment in IVF failure remains ill defined...

Endometritis is a major cause of infertility in many domestic species. However, until now the pathogenesis of the endometritis in the bitch is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gene transcription pattern of prostaglandin (PG) synthesis enzymes (cyclooxygenase [COX2], PTGES-1 and PGFS) in the endometrium of bitches with or without endometritis. Thirty mixed breed bitches in dioestrus, aged between 1 and 5 years, and weighing between 10 and 30 kg were used. After ovariohysterectomy (OVX), uterine biopsy samples were collected from the middle part of both horns...

A 55-year-old woman who had had the same intrauterine device (IUD) for 13 years was referred to the gynaecology outpatient clinic due to constitutional symptoms, abdominal pain and vaginal discharge. Diagnostic imaging showed multiple pelvic abscesses, and severe chronic endometritis with Actinomyces was found in an endometrial biopsy. The patient underwent surgical drainage of the accessible abscesses and started long-term antibiotic treatment. This case report illustrates that actinomycosis is an important differential diagnosis in symptomatic women with IUD and suspected gynaecologic malignancy...

Endometrial receptivity is crucial for implantation and establishment of a normal pregnancy. The shift from proliferative to receptive endometrium is still far from being understood. In this paper, we comprehensively present the transcriptome of the human endometrium by comparing endometrial biopsies from proliferative phase with consecutive biopsies 7-9 days after ovulation. The results show a clear difference in expression between the two time points using both total and small RNA sequencing. A total of 3,297 messenger RNAs (mRNAs), 516 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), and 102 small noncoding RNAs were identified as statistically differentially expressed between the two time points...

AIMS: For the diagnostic workup of postmenopausal bleeding, histological examination of the endometrium is frequently performed. Failure of endometrial sampling due to insufficient material is often reported but objective criteria for quality assessment of endometrial biopsies are lacking. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the association between the amount of tissue obtained by endometrial sampling and the diagnostic accuracy, and to establish a cut-off level for a minimal amount of tissue required for a conclusive diagnosis...

Collision tumours are defined by co-existence of two tumours in the same or adjacent organs which are topographically and histologically distinct with minimal or no histological admixture. Collision tumours have been described in many organs notably thyroid, brain, adrenal gland, stomach and rarely uterus. Most of the collision tumours reported in uterus have two components; an adenocarcinoma and a sarcoma. We report a case of a 60-year-old lady who presented with complaints of post-menopausal bleeding. A cervical biopsy was performed which showed a non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of cervix...

Necrotizing autoimmune myopathy (NAM) is a rare subgroup of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM). This pathology usually affects proximal limb muscles and in some cases the myocardium. Patients usually display proximal limb weakness. Muscular biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with an atypical first presentation of NAM, manifested by chest pain in the context of metastatic endometrial cancer. The diagnosis of NAM was however made when she returned a second time with proximal limb weakness...

PURPOSE: We sought to examine whether a preoperative assessment with usual means, available in most hospitals (preoperative histology, pelvic MRI, serum CA-125) can confidently exclude from a full staging surgical procedure low-risk endometrial carcinoma (EC) patients according to ESMO-ESTRO-ESGO criteria (stage I endometrioid EC, grade 1 or 2, myometrial invasion <50% and negative lymphovascular space invasion). METHODS: We retrospectively identified all EC patients that underwent total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (TH-BSO) plus lymph node dissection (LND) as primary treatment for endometrioid tumors from January, 2000 to December, 2010...
