Heterogeneous photocatalysis-self-Fenton technology is a sustainable strategy for treating organic pollutants in actual water bodies with high-fluent degradation and high mineralization capacity, overcoming the limitations of the safety risks caused by adding external iron sources and hazardous chemicals in the homogeneous Fenton reaction and injecting high-intensity energy fields in photo-Fenton reaction. Herein, a photo-self-Fenton system based on resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) resin and red mud (RM) was established to generate hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) in situ and transform into hydroxy radical (• OH) for efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation...

Gas-phase ion chemistry influences atmospheric processes, particularly in the formation of cloud condensation nuclei by producing ionic and neutral species in the upper troposphere-stratosphere region impacted by cosmic rays. This work investigates an exothermic ionic route to the formation of hydroperoxyl radical (HO2 ) and protonated formaldehyde from methanol radical cation and molecular oxygen. Methanol, a key atmospheric component, contributes to global emissions and participates in various chemical reactions affecting atmospheric composition...

The global production of plywood is constantly increasing as its application in the furniture and interior decoration industry becomes more widespread. An urgent issue is how to decrease the formaldehyde released from plywood, considering its carcinogenic effect on humans and harm to the environment. Reducing the free formaldehyde content of the urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesives used in the preparation process is considered an effective method. Therefore, it is necessary to identify a new type of formaldehyde scavengers...

Molded plywood is used for furniture components such as seats, backrests, or integral seat shells, and it must be durable and harmless to health. Molded plywood is made with urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives; therefore, the issue of the fillers used in them is important. The potential of using ground beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) bark as an eco-friendly additive in UF adhesives for molded plywood manufacturing was investigated in this work. Wheat flour was used as a reference filler. The beech bark (BB) level as a filler was 10%, a value verified under laboratory conditions...

Tung oil (TO) microcapsules (MCs) with a poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) shell were synthesized via one-step in situ polymerization, with the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) (1-5 wt. %). The synergistic effects of emulsifiers between gelatin (gel) and Tween 80 were observed, with gel chosen to formulate the MCs due to its enhanced droplet stability. SEM images then displayed an increased shell roughness of the TO-GNP MCs in comparison to the pure TO MCs due to the GNP species on the shell. At the same time, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images also confirmed the presence of GNPs on the outer layer of the MCs, with the stacked graphene layers composed of 5-7 layers with an interlayer distance of ~0...

Metal-free boron-based catalysts such as boron oxide (B2O3) and boron nitride (h-BN) are promising catalysts for the methane oxidation to HCHO and CO. The B2O3 catalyst contains various probable boron sites (B1 to B6), which may be responsible for methane oxidation. In this work, we utilized density functional theory to compare two relevant geometrically identical boron sites (B2 and B4) for their reactivities. The two sites are explored in-detail for the conversion of methane to formaldehyde (M2F), carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide...

Lung inflammatory disorders are a major global health burden, impacting millions of people and raising rates of morbidity and death across many demographic groups. An industrial chemical and common environmental contaminant, formaldehyde (FA) presents serious health concerns to the respiratory system, including the onset and aggravation of lung inflammatory disorders. Given that modern individuals spend over 90% of their time indoors, effectively tackling indoor formaldehyde pollution holds significant importance. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient catalyst for formaldehyde degradation: surface modification of MoS2 by single-atom Ni, which can convert formaldehyde into harmless H2 O and CO2 ...

The use of formalin to preserve raw food items such as fish, meat, vegetables etc . is very commonly practiced in the present day. Also, formaldehyde (FA), which is the main constituent of formalin solution, is known to cause serious health issues on exposure. Considering the ill effects of formaldehyde, herein we report synthesis of highly sensitive triphenylmethane based formaldehyde (FA) sensors from a single step reaction of inexpensive reagents namely 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde and 2,6-dimethyl phenol. The synthetic method also provides highly pure product in bulk quantity...

DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) induced by aldehydes interfere with replication and transcription. Hereditary deficiencies in DPC repair and aldehyde clearance processes cause progeria, including Ruijs-Aalfs syndrome (RJALS) and AMeD syndrome (AMeDS) in humans. Although the elimination of DPC during replication has been well established, how cells overcome DPC lesions in transcription remains elusive. Here we show that endogenous aldehyde-induced DPC roadblocks are efficiently resolved by transcription-coupled repair (TCR)...

In this study, BiVO4 -TiO2 catalyst was developed using ultrasonic blending technology for the photocatalytic oxidation of low-level indoor HCHO. The crystal structure, surface morphology, element distribution, and active oxidation species of the catalyst were examined using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis, EDS, and ESR techniques. Normal saline and 20% calcium chloride (20 ml/testis) were injected in the sham and chemical group's testis, respectively. This is achievable through nanowarming, an approach that heats magnetic nanoparticles by using alternating magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate the synthesis and surface modification of magnetic nanoclusters for efficient nanowarming. Magnetite (Fe3 O4 ) nanoclusters with an optimal diameter of 58 nm exhibit a high specific absorption rate of 1499 W/g Fe under an alternating magnetic field at 43 kA/m and 413 kHz, more than twice that of commercial iron oxide cores used in prior nanowarming studies...
