Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal tract symptoms. In this study, prebiotic sesame sugar (PSC) was prepared from isomalto-oligosaccharide, konjac glucomannan and sesame, and the relieving effect of PSC on constipation induced by loperamide was explored. The results showed that PSC treatment profoundly improved the defecation function and boosted intestinal motility. Moreover, PSC repaired gastrointestinal tissue injury and inflammation induced by constipation, which confirmed the effectiveness of PSC intervention in the treatment of constipation...

BACKGROUND: Water-in-oil-in-water (W1 /O/W2 ) emulsions stabilized by protein-carbohydrate complexes were prepared from an inner water phase (W1 ), an oil phase (O) and an outer water phase (W2 ). The complexes consisted of heat-induced aggregates (HIAs) of isomalto-oligosaccharide/egg white protein Maillard conjugates. The effects of polyglycerol ester of polyricinoleic acid (PGPR) concentration, HIA concentration, W1 -to-O volume ratio and W1 /O-to-W2 volume ratio on the properties of the W1 /O/W2 emulsions were systematically investigated...

Thirty-two ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) piglets, weaned at 25 days of age, were randomly assigned into four groups. Group I was fed the basal diet. Group II were fed a basal diet supplemented with 2 g/kg IMO for 14 consecutive days and then 4 g/kg IMO for another 14 days...

In this study, microcapsules were prepared via spray drying using Bifidobacterium adolescentis species cultured in soy milk extract with biosurfactant prepared using Alcaligenes piechaudii CC-ESB2 to improve their powder properties. This study aimed to investigate in vitro effects of the selected prebiotics alone, and in combination with two potential probiotic Lactobacillus strains on the microbial composition of Apis cerana gut microbiota and acid production. Four prebiotics, inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides, xylo-oligosaccharides, and isomalto-oligosaccharides were chosen, and glucose served as the carbon source. Supplementation of this four prebiotics increased numbers of Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria while decreasing the pH value of in vitro fermentation broth inoculated with A...

Metabolic syndrome a lifestyle disease, where diet and gut microbiota play a prodigious role in its initiation and progression. Prophylactic bio-interventions employing probiotics and prebiotics offer an alternate nutritional approach towards attenuating its progression. The present study aimed to evaluate the protective efficacy of a novel synbiotic (Lactiplantibacillus pentosus GSSK2 + isomalto-oligosaccharides) in comparison to orlistat in an experimental model of metabolic syndrome. It was observed that supplementation of synbiotic for 12 weeks to Sprague Dawley rats fed with high fat diet (HFD), ameliorated the morphometric parameters i...

An early-diverged yeast, Blastobotrys ( Arxula ) adeninivorans ( Ba ), has biotechnological potential due to nutritional versatility, temperature tolerance, and production of technologically applicable enzymes. We have biochemically characterized from the Ba type strain (CBS 8244) the GH13-family maltase Ba AG2 with efficient transglycosylation activity on maltose. In the current study, transglycosylation of sucrose was studied in detail. The chemical entities of sucrose-derived oligosaccharides were determined using nuclear magnetic resonance...

Non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) from dietary sources have the potential as prebiotics for neuroprotection. Globally, diverse populations suffering from one or the other forms of neurodegenerative disorders are on the rise, and NDOs have the potential as supportive complementary therapeutic options against these oxidative-linked disorders. Elevated levels of free radicals cause oxidative damage to biological molecules like proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids associated with various neurological disorders...

The dietary supplementation of prebiotics is considered a promising strategy for the modulation of gut microbiota. Due to the wide variety of animal models and tremendous inter-individual variability from human investigations, the prebiotic effect of fibers is often difficult to compare between studies. Here, the effects of 11 dietary fibers on human fecal microbiota were studied using an in vitro human fecal fermentation model under well-controlled conditions. All fibers showed positive regulatory effects on short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and several beneficial bacteria, including Parabacteroides distasonis and Bifidobacterium spp...

Constipation in gestating and lactating sows is common and the inclusion of dietary fiber may help to alleviate this problem. SCOPE: Next to galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), starch-derived isomalto-oligosaccharide preparation (IMO) and isomalto/malto-polysaccharides (IMMP) could potentially be used as prebiotics in infant formulas. This study aimed to provide an integrated assessment of different strategies for sugar-reduced bread by using isomaltooligosaccharides (IMO) as bulk sweetening agent, polysaccharide hydrolases to generate sugars from flour polysaccharides, and sourdough. The conformational preferences of several α-1,6-linear and α-1,3-branched isomalto-oligosaccharides were investigated by NMR and MD-simulations. Right-handed helical structure contributed to the solution geometry in isomaltotriose and isomaltotetraose with one nearly complete helix turn and stabilizing intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the latter by MD-simulation. Decreased helix contribution was observed in α-1,3-glucopyranosyl- and α-1,3-isomaltosyl-branched saccharide chains. Especially the latter modification was predicted to cause a more compact structure consistent with literature rheology measurements as well as with published dextranase-resistant α-1,3-branched oligosaccharides...
