BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The treatment of periprosthetic joint infection is complicated by the presence of residual biofilm, which resists eradication owing to bacterial adherence to orthopedic implants. The purpose of this study was to compare Bactisure (Zimmer Biomet, Warsaw, IN, USA), povidone-iodine (Betadine), and chlorhexidine gluconate solution (Irrisept; Irrimax, Gainesville, FL, USA) in reducing biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Cutibacterium acnes inoculated on cobalt-chrome, titanium, and stainless steel disks, representing metals commonly used for shoulder arthroplasty...

Objective: The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of pre-treating dentin with chlorhexidine, at concentrations of 0.2% and 2%, and remineralizing paste containing CPP-ACP (MI Paste - GC) on the bond strength of adhesive systems. Material and methods: In total, 80 slides of dentin were used. These slides were 2 mm thick and were obtained from bovine incisors. Standard cavities were created using diamond bur number 3131. In the control groups, a Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SUA) self-etching adhesive system of 3M ESPE and a Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) adhesive system of Kuraray were applied, following the manufacturer's instructions...

While iodine deficiency remains a relatively rare cause of thyroid dysfunction in the United States, little is known about iodine status and deficiency in children requiring parenteral nutrition (PN). This population may be at an elevated risk of thyroid dysregulation and neurodevelopmental sequelae due to low concentrations in typical PN formulations. Furthermore, with the widespread practice of switching from iodine-based antiseptics to chlorhexadine, previous inadvertent sources of iodine are being eliminated as well...

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal perforation in the setting of blunt trauma is rare, and diagnosis can be difficult due to atypical signs and symptoms accompanied by distracting injury. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of esophageal perforation resulting from a fall from height. Unexplained air in the soft tissues planes posterior to the esophagus as well as subcutaneous emphysema in the absence of a pneumothorax on CT aroused clinical suspicions of an injury to the aerodigestive tract...

The aim of this investigation was to quantify the discolouration of tooth roots caused by various medicaments and sealers. The roots of extracted teeth were chemo-mechanically prepared and the smear layer removed. The roots were filled with either Multi-Cal (Pulpdent Corporation, Watertown, MA, USA), Ledermix (Lederle Laboratories, Wolfratshausen, Germany), 2% chlorhexadine acetate in polyethylene glycol (PEG), 5% clindamycin in PEG, PEG alone (as a vehicle control), sealers AH26 (De Trey Dentsply, Zurich, Switzerland), AH Plus (De Trey Dentsply), an experimental epoxy resin with zirconium dioxide (Millenium Chemicals, Rockingham, Western Australia) or Araldite (Selleys Pty Ltd, Sydney, Australia)...

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of contamination by ferric sulfate and aluminum chloride astringents on the bond strength of composite bonded to superficial dentin using self-etching adhesives. METHODS: Freshly extracted human teeth were ground to expose superficial dentin and polished to 600 grit. One of three self-etching adhesive systems and restorative composites were bonded to the specimens, with contamination by one of three astringents and five surface conditions (no contamination, moist dentin control; contaminant, air, adhesive; contaminant, water rinse, air, adhesive; contaminant, water rinse, glycolic acid scrub, rinse, adhesive; contaminant, water rinse, chlorhexadine scrub, rinse, adhesive)...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
D Freiberger, J Bryant, B Marino
Central venous lines are now common in children who need a permanent form of intravenous access. These lines frequently become infected. This study compared the effects of different antiseptics (Hibiclens [chlorhexadine 4%; Stuart Pharmaceutical, Wilmington, DE] and Betadine [povidone-iodine, Clini Pad Corp, Guilford, CT]) used to clean the skin as well as the dressings used to cover the exit site (Tegaderm [3-M Medical-Surgical Division, St Paul, MN] and gauze) on microorganism growth on the skin in a pediatric oncology population...
