OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe the current situation regarding the training, working conditions, future plans, fields of interest and satisfaction of orthopaedics and traumatology residents in Turkey. METHODS: A descriptive survey questionnaire consisting of 24 questions was designed to identify the problems and solution suggestions concerning training of orthopaedic residents. All orthopaedics and traumatology residents who took the 2013 Progress Testing for Speciality in Medicine (UEGS) held by Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Education Council (TOTEK) were surveyed in the class at the end thereof as well as the young orthopaedic surgeons who were reached through the email groups of Turkish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology - Residents and Young Attendings Council (TOTBID-AGUH)...

The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and United European Gastroenterology (UEG) have a vision to create a thriving community of endoscopy services across Europe, collaborating with each other to provide high quality, safe, accurate, patient-centered and accessible endoscopic care. Whilst the boundaries of what can be achieved by advanced endoscopy are continually expanding, we believe that one of the most fundamental steps to achieving our goal is to raise the quality of everyday endoscopy...

Repolarization alternans is a marker of increased vulnerability to fatal arrhythmias. At the tissue level, in unipolar electrograms (UEGs) recorded on the myocardium, repolarization alternans is often measured as an alternating change of the T-wave, so called T-wave alternans (TWA). During ischemia, UEG-TWA is used as a marker of cardiac instability and is considered as a key parameter to assess pharmacological strategies. However, during ischemia it is not clear whether UEG-TWA is a sign of repolarization alternans which may promote 2:1 conduction block, or whether it is induced by ongoing regional 2:1 conduction block...

The ventricular action potential duration (APD) is a fundamental determinant of cardiac electrical stability and can be estimated by measuring the activation recovery interval (ARI) from the unipolar electrogram (UEG), which represents the electrical activity of the heart at the tissue level. Under experimental conditions, automatic estimation of ARIs is challenging due to non-related interferences and low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In this simulation study, we investigated how the reliability of ARI estimates is affected by noise and artefacts in the UEG...

The uniform electron gas (UEG) at finite temperature is of high current interest due to its key relevance for many applications including dense plasmas and laser excited solids. In particular, density functional theory heavily relies on accurate thermodynamic data for the UEG. Until recently, the only existing first-principle results had been obtained for N = 33 electrons with restricted path integral Monte Carlo (RPIMC), for low to moderate density, rs=r¯/aB≳1. These data have been complemented by configuration path integral Monte Carlo (CPIMC) simulations for rs ≤ 1 that substantially deviate from RPIMC towards smaller rs and low temperature...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy might lead to clinical and histologic remission in a significant proportion of patients with symptomatic esophageal eosinophilia (>15 eos/high-power field). We aimed to evaluate systematically the efficacy of PPI therapy for these patients. METHODS: A search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases, and the American Gastroenterological Association Institute, American College of Gastroenterology, and United European Gastroenterology meetings abstract books, was performed...
