INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a distressing complication that can occur after inguinal hernia repair, affecting between 5% and 20% of patients as reported in literature. There are several reasons for chronic pain, including peripheral nerve irritation caused by surgical mesh or stitches. Preoperative pain is a risk factor for chronic pain. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 59-year-old man who experienced chronic inguinal pain following Lichtenstein hernia repair...

UNLABELLED: Complications associated with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery using a synthetic non-absorbable mesh are uncommon (<5%) but may be severe and may hugely diminish the quality of life of some women. In drawing up these multidisciplinary clinical practice recommendations, the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de santé, HAS) conducted an exhaustive review of the literature concerning the diagnosis, prevention, and management of complications associated with POP surgery using a synthetic mesh...

Stomal prolapse is one of the most common complications of enterostoma. Stoma if persistent and significant often requires revision of stoma. The techniques described often require laparotomy with resection or internal fixation of the bowel. Such procedures may make further laparotomy more difficult. We herein describe the use of a relatively simple procedure for the correction of stomal prolapse.

CONTEXT: Onlay and retromuscular sublay mesh repairs are the most frequently used procedures in open repair of midline incisional hernias. The onlay placement of the mesh is simple and fast to perform, while the sublay retromuscular repair offers a supplementary protection against infection, but it is considered a more complicated procedure with a higher risk of early postoperative complications. The personal experience of the surgeons plays an important role in choosing the technique of mesh placement...

BACKGROUND: Large bone defects require complex treatment, multidisciplinary resources, and expert input, with surgical procedures ranging from reconstruction and salvage to amputation. The aim of this study was to provide the results of a case series of open comminuted intra-articular distal femoral fractures with significant bone loss that were managed by early fixation using anatomical plates and a modified Masquelet technique with the addition of surgical propylene mesh. METHODS: This retrospective study included all patients referred to our institution with OTA/AO C3 distal femur open fractures and meta-diaphyseal large bone loss between April 2019 and February 2021...

To test the hypothesis that dysregulated wound healing is associated with Urogynecologic mesh complications, we collected vaginal cell secretions using vaginal swabs after polypropylene mesh implantation in patients with (N = 39) and without (N = 40) complication. A customized multiplex immunoassay measured markers of inflammation (MCP-1, IGFBP-1, IL-2, IL-10, IL-17, PDGF-BB, bFGF, IL-1b, IL-6, IL-12p70, TNF-α), neuroinflammation (IL-1RA, TGF-β, IL-15, IL-18, IL-3, M-CSF), angiogenesis (VEGF), and matrix proteins (fibronectin, tenasin c, thrombospondin-2, lumican) between groups...

INTRODUCTION: Hernia repair using prosthetic mesh materials has become the preferred method of repair, as the recurrence rates are much lower than with conventional repair techniques. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare open small- and medium-sized abdominal wall hernia repair with flat patch mesh versus three-dimensional mesh (plug) in terms of recurrence and complication rates. METHODS: The medical records of 300 patients who underwent abdominal wall hernia repair using flat patch mesh versus three-dimensional mesh between January 2010 to December 2015 were reviewed...

PURPOSE: Incisional hernia (IH) is one of the most common complications after abdominal surgeries and may bring great suffering to patients. This study aims to evaluate the global trends in IH research from 2003 to 2023 and visualize the frontiers using bibliometric analysis. METHODS: The literature search was conducted on the Web of Science for IH studies published from 2003 to 2023 and sorted by citation frequency. The top 100 most-cited articles were analyzed by the annual publication number, prolific countries and institutions, influential author and journal, and the number of citations through descriptive statistics and visualization...

Incisional hernia is a frequent complication after abdominal surgery. A previous study on rats evaluated the use of a Pectin-Honey Hydrogel (PHH)-coated polypropylene (PP) mesh for the healing of acute hernias. However, there are no studies investigating the use of PHH in association with PP mesh in chronic contaminated hernia. The aims of this study are to assess the effectiveness of PHH in promoting abdominal hernia repaired with PP mesh and in counteracting infection. Twenty Sprague Dawley male rats were enrolled and a full thickness defect was made in the abdominal wall...

Perineal hernia is a rare complication of rectal surgery. Different types of surgical approach have been described, but none of them have proven their superiority. Although there are many methods of closing the defect, we selected two cases to present from a series of five cases, in which the perineal hernia was successfully resolved surgically using only the perineal approach. The reconstruction of the perineal floor and closure of the defect were performed using a synthetic polypropylene mesh. The significance of this Technical Note article lies in the fact that we describe, step by step, a surgical technique for perineal hernia using just a perineal approach...

BACKGROUND: Permanent synthetic meshes such as polypropylene (PP) have been utilized for hernia repair for decades, but concerns remain regarding potential long-term, mesh-related complications. A resorbable polymer such as poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) represents an alternative with high initial strength, that gradually resorbs, leaving an abdominal wall that is at least as strong as it would be in its native state. We aimed to compare early wound morbidity and clinical outcomes associated with P4HB to traditional, permanent PP in umbilical and small to medium, routine ventral hernias using data from the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC)...

Morgagni hernia is a rare congenital diaphragmatic hernia associated with the minor retro-xiphoid region between the sternal and costal attachments. The bilateral and complicated Morgagni hernia occurred exceptionally rarely, at a rate of 4% and 6.5%. An 81-year-old woman with occasional constipation went to the emergency department for epigastric pain and vomiting 3 days before. She could no longer pass gas that caused abdominal distention. Clinical examination and ultrasound showed partial bowel obstruction, an unspecified cause...
