Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmental contaminants of growing concern due to their potential negative effects on wildlife and human health. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been shown to alter immune function in various taxa, which could influence the outcomes of host-parasite interactions. To date, studies have focused on the effects of PFAS on host susceptibility to parasites, but no studies have addressed the effects of PFAS on parasites. To address this knowledge gap, we independently manipulated exposure of larval northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) and parasites (flatworms) via their snail intermediate host to environmentally relevant PFAS concentrations and then conducted trials to assess host susceptibility to infection, parasite infectivity, and parasite longevity after emergence from the host...

BACKGROUND: Gualou is derived from the fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim, while Xiebai from the bulbs of Allium macrostemon Bunge. Gualou and Xiebai herb pair (2:1) is widely used in clinical practice to treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanism underlying its potential activity on atherosclerosis (AS) has not been fully elucidated. METHODS: The extract of Gualou-Xiebai herb pair (GXE) was prepared from Gualou (80 g) and Xiebai (40 g) by continuous refluxing with 50% ethanol for 2 h at 80°C...

High-performance elastomers are essential in daily life and various industrial sectors such as personal protection, soft electronics, and vibration control. Nevertheless, despite massive efforts, concurrently achieving ultrahigh flexibility and remarkable impact resistance continues to be elusive. Herein, we report an innovative modular construction strategy that employs a topology-tailoring polymer network consisting of stereoscopic (epoxy-oligosiloxane nanoclusters) and linear (amino-terminated polyurea) building blocks as independent modules to develop intelligent anti-impact elastomers via an epoxy-amine mechanism...

Lentil protein hydrolysates (LPH) and lentil protein hydrolysates cross-linked (LPHC) were grafted with gum Arabic (GA) through a wet Maillard reaction at 100°C for 2 h and called MLPH and MLPHC. The samples were assessed for absorption, degree of grafting (DG), surface hydrophobicity, antioxidant activity, molecular weight (MW) profile, chemical alteration, volatile compounds, functional and sensory properties. Results showed that Maillard grafting led to increase in absorption and DG (maximum value: MLPHC), and led to the reduction of the surface hydrophobicity and antioxidant activity (minimum value: MLPHC)...

In this study, we proposed a method for fabricating Janus sheets using biological "microflowers" as a sacrificial template. The microflower-templated Janus sheets (MF-JNSs) were employed as a foam stabilizer in foam separation of the whey soybean protein (WSP). The MF-JNSs took inorganic hybrid microflowers (BSA@Cu3 (PO4 )2 -MF) as template, followed by the sequential attachment of protamine and silica to the surface of the BSA@Cu3 (PO4 )2 -MF. Subsequently, the template was removed using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid after the silicon dioxide was modified by 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyl trimethoxysilane...

In this study, a new catalyst for catalytic ozonation was obtained by in-situ growth of Mn-Ni3 S2 nanosheets on the surface of nickel foam (NF). The full degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was accomplished under optimal conditions in 40 min. The effects of material dosage, ozone dosage, pH and the presence of inorganic anions on the degradation efficiency of PNP were investigated. ESR analysis showed that singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) and superoxide radical (O2 •- ) are the main contributors of PNP degradation...

However, high-cost, low freshwater collection rate, and salt-blockage issues significantly hinder the practical application of solar-driven desalination devices based on ISVG. Herein, with a low-cost copper plate (CP), nonwoven fabric (NWF), and insulating ethylene-vinyl acetate foam (EVA foam), a multistage device is elaborately fabricated for highly efficient simultaneous freshwater and salt collection...

Polyurethane (PU) is a complex polymer synthesized from polyols and isocyanates. It contains urethane bonds that resist hydrolysis, which decreases the efficiency of biodegradation. In this study, we first expressed the amidase GatA250, and then, assessed the enzymatic characterization of GatA250 and its efficiency in degrading the polyester-PU. GatA250 degraded self-synthesized thermoplastic PU film and postconsumption foam with degradation efficiency of 8.17% and 4.29%, respectively. During the degradation, the film released 14...

In recent years, soil screening levels have been adopted by regulatory agencies for certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to assess the risk of groundwater contamination through leaching. These soil screening levels, determined using an established equilibrium-based partitioning equation, have high variability among regulatory groups largely attributed to the diverse reported partitioning coefficients in the literature. This variability between reported partitioning coefficients, and subsequently soil screening levels, is due to the complex leaching behavior of PFAS not being predicted well by the standard equilibrium-based model...

OBJECTIVE: Many children with physical disabilities need additional postural support when sitting and supplementary padding is used on standards approved child restraints to achieve this when traveling in a motor vehicle. This study aimed to investigate the effect of additional padding for postural support on crash protection for child occupants in forward facing child restraints. METHODS: Forty frontal sled tests at 49 km/h were conducted to compare Q1 anthropometric test device (ATD) responses in a forward-facing restraint, with and without additional padding in locations to increase recline of the restraint, and/or support the head, trunk and pelvis...

In this system, electrons generated from NF directly migrate into E. coli cells to promote highly efficient biocatalytic hydrogen production. The effect of wood particle size on the aqueous foam stability, structure, and performance of insulative foams was investigated.
