We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on whether memantine was beneficial for the treatment of depressive symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). The analysis included double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of memantine in MDD and BD. The primary outcome measures for efficacy and safety were response rate and all-cause discontinuation, respectively. Risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated...

BACKGROUND: Rheology experiments have been performed on the vitreous humor, a soft gel that rests inside of the eye, to study its viscoelastic behavior and underlying macromolecular structure. A significant challenge for experimentalists is preserving the macromolecular structure when removing vitreous from in vivo conditions. OBJECTIVE: We have developed a novel probe-like rheometer geometry that allows us to perform shear rheology experiments on the vitreous humor in situ...

INTRODUCTION: Pathological conditions such as diabetic foot and plantar heel pain are associated with changes in the mechanical properties of plantar soft tissue. However, the causes and implications of these changes are not yet fully understood. This is mainly because accurate assessment of the mechanical properties of plantar soft tissue in the clinic remains extremely challenging. PURPOSE: To develop a clinically viable non-invasive method of assessing the mechanical properties of the heel pad...

4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE) and 4-oxo-2-nonenal (ONE) are biologically important reactive aldehydes formed during oxidative stress in phospholipid bilayers. They are highly reactive species due to presence of several reaction centers and can react with amino acids in peptides and proteins, as well as phosphoethanolamine (PE) lipids, thus modifying their biological activity. The aim of this work is to study in a molecular detail the reactivity of HNE and ONE towards PE lipids in a simplified system containing only lipids and reactive aldehydes in dichloromethane as an inert solvent...

Transition-metal alkylidenes are important reactive organometallic intermediates, and our current knowledge on them has been mainly restricted to those with closed-shell electronic configurations. In this study, we present the exploration on open-shell iron alkylidenes with a weak-field tripodal amido-phosphine-amido ligand. We found that a high-spin (amido-phosphine-amido)iron(II) complex can react with (p-tolyl)2CN2 to afford a high-spin (amido-ylide-amido)iron(II) complex, 2, which could transfer its alkylidene moiety to a variety of alkenes, either the electron-rich or electron-deficient ones, to form cyclopropane derivatives...

At small food processing facilities, the most frequently used test to determine if grain-derived mycotoxin concentrations are compliant with legal limits is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Each kit is designed to detect one of the six dangerous mycotoxins. With the increasing occurrence of coinfection of grain with multiple-mycotoxins in the field and/or during storage, ELISA is no longer a cost effective best assay option. With ELISA, each species of mycotoxin requires different sample preparation/extraction and a 45 min incubation...

BACKGROUND: In the absence of liver biopsy, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends non-invasive tests, such as APRI (aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index) and FIB-4, to assess liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, these tests are not well validated in sub-Saharan Africa. Recently, a new marker, GPR (gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase to platelet ratio), was found to be more accurate in an African setting, but this needs confirmation in other cohorts...

The strength-interval curve plays a major role in understanding how cardiac tissue responds to an electrical stimulus. This complex behavior has been studied previously using the bidomain formulation incorporating the Beeler-Reuter and Luo-Rudy dynamic ionic current models. The complexity of these models renders the interpretation and extrapolation of simulation results problematic. Here we utilize a recently developed parsimonious ionic current model with only two currents-a sodium current that activates rapidly upon depolarization INa and a time-independent inwardly rectifying repolarization current IK-which reproduces many experimentally measured action potential waveforms...

We systematically investigate the optical response of a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) hybridized with a vanadium dioxide nanoparticle (VO2NP) in the infrared (IR) region. The VO2NP features a semiconductor to metal phase change characteristic below and above a critical temperature that leads to an abrupt change in the particle's optical properties. This feature means that the QD-VO2NP hybrid system can support the coherent coupling of exciton-polaritons and exciton-plasmon polaritons in the semiconductor and metal phases of the VO2NP, respectively...
