Meckel diverticulum (MD) is one of the most common congenital gastrointestinal anomalies and occurs in 1.2-2% of the general population. MD usually presents with massive painless rectal bleeding, intestinal obstruction or inflammation in children and adults. Suppurative Meckel diverticulitis is uncommon in children. An experience is described of a 3-year-old girl with suppurative inflammation in a tip of MD. She complained of acute colicky abdominal pain, vomiting and periumbilical erythema. The function of ancillary domains and modules attatched to the catalytic domain of mutidomain proteases, such as the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), are not well understood. The importance of discrete MMP substrate binding sites termed exosites on domains located outside the catalytic domain was first demonstrated for native collagenolysis. The essential role of hemopexin carboxyl-domain exosites in the cleavage of noncollagenous substrates such as chemokines has also been recently revealed. A method of separating rosette-forming cells on columns with an immunosorbent based on sephadex G-75 is described and has been tested. The protein antigen (bovine serum albumin-BSA) is attatched by covalent bonds to the surface of the Sephadex granules oxidized by sodium periodate. Cells with receptors on their surface were tested by the rosette method. Up to 88% of the rosette-forming cells were retained on a column packed with BSA-Sephadex granules. Fab dimers were prepared by pepsin digestion from the immunoglobulin fraction of a rabbit antiserum towards the Yac Moloney virus lymphoma cells. Daunomycin was attatched to these (Fab)2 by covalent binding. The resultant conjugates exerted pharmacological toxic activity and specificity towards Yac target cells similar to that observed previously with conjugates of intact anti-Yac IgG. Highly active, essentially homogeneous, preparations of ferrocytochrome c oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) have been obtained from both yeast and beef heart by extraction with cholate, fractionation with ammonium sulfate, and replacement of cholate by Tween 20.
