In human and hand pose estimation, heatmaps are a crucial intermediate representation for a body or hand keypoint. Two popular methods to decode the heatmap into a final joint coordinate are via an argmax, as done in heatmap detection, or via softmax and expectation, as done in integral regression. Integral regression is learnable end-to-end, but has lower accuracy than detection. This paper uncovers an induced bias from integral regression that results from combining the softmax and the expectation operation...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study was conducted to identify prognostic factors in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) at the time of first radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, and to evaluate the clinical value of the thyroglobulin (Tg) increase after RAI. METHODS: Serum Tg was sampled prior to (pre-Tg) and 7 days after RAI (post-Tg) in 680 patients with PTC. Patients were classified into excellent response (ER), biochemical incomplete response (BCIR), structural incomplete response (SIR), and indeterminate response (IR) groups using dynamic risk stratification at 6 to 18 months after RAI therapy...

In this study, we tested the in vitro and in vivo larvicidal activity of Bacillus species against gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle, and their viability in the presence of anthelmintics. For in vitro tests, cattle feces naturally infected with trichostrongylides were incubated with spore suspensions of Bacillus circulans (Bcir), B. thuringiensis var. osvaldocruzi (Bto), B. thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) or B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk). Subsequently, residual larvae were counted and identified...

BACKGROUND: The objective of this meta-analysis in patients with myeloma was to test the hypothesis that the addition of bortezomib to induction therapy not only improves the depth of response but also improves post-transplant progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) outcomes. METHODS: Phase 3 trials that randomized newly diagnosed, transplant-eligible patients with myeloma to receive either a bortezomib-containing induction regimen (BCIR) or a nonbortezomib-containing induction regimen (NBCIR) were identified...

The beta-galactosidases from Xanthomonas manihotis (beta-Gal Xmn) and Bacillus circulans (beta-Gal-3 Bcir) are retaining glycosidases that hydrolyze glycosidic bonds through a double displacement mechanism involving a covalent glycosyl-enzyme intermediate. The mechanism-based inactivator 2,4-dinitrophenyl 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-beta-D-galactopyranoside was shown to inactivate beta-Gal Xmn and beta-Gal-3 Bcir through the accumulation of 2-deoxy-2-fluorogalactosyl enzyme intermediates with half lives of 40 and 625 h, respectively...

We have previously described several novel chimeric immune receptors (CIRs) that redirect human T cells to kill malignant or HIV-infected cells. These CIRs comprise a cancer- or virus-specific ligand or single-chain antibody fused to the signaling domain of the T-cell receptor CD3-zeta subunit. Binding of the ligand- or antibody-based CIR to the target antigen (Ag) triggers T-cell-mediated cytolysis of the tumor- or virus-infected cell independent of target cell major histocompatibility complex class I expression...

Using a peptide extraction procedure, reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography, and a radioimmunoassay that utilized an antibody raised specifically against human beta-casomorphin-8 (BC8), BC-immunoreactivity (BCIR) was detected in rostrocaudally increasing levels in nineteen microscopically distinct and functionally relevant areas of mesencephalon, pons cerebri, and medulla oblongata of eight infants. On the basis of the methodology used, it can be concluded, that the BCIR present in their brain stem was due to BC8 and/or to some of its congeners...

PURPOSE: Since 1988, surgeons at five hospitals have been performing the Barnett continent intestinal reservoir (BCIR). The BCIR includes modifications to the original Kock pouch, designed to reduce the incidence of valve slippage and fistula formation. Principle modifications include an intestinal collar, an isoperistaltic valve, and a lateral pouch design. METHOD: This unique collaborative study includes 510 ulcerative colitis or familial polyposis patients, with a follow-up time from one to five years postoperatively...

We determined to what extent a change in the lipid composition of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum contributes to altered microsomal function in cirrhosis. Rats were rendered cirrhotic either by chronic exposure to phenobarbital/CCl4 (MCIR) or by bile duct ligation (BCIR). Microsomal function was tested in vivo by the aminopyrine breath test (ABT), then microsomes were prepared and their phospholipid and cholesterol composition analysed. ABT was reduced by 35 and 41% in BCIR and MCIR, respectively. Cholesterol in microsomes was increased in both cirrhotic groups...
