Necrotizing fasciitis is one of the most serious and deadly infections in surgery. The tissue defects that result after a severe infection with necrotizing fasciitis are often not easy to resolve surgically. The importance of this article is to show the reconstructive efficacy of the lotus petal flap based on two perforators. We present a 71-year-old female case with necrotizing fasciitis infection and defect of the region of the vulva (labia major) and perineum. We solved the reconstruction of the defect of the lower half of the labia major and the perineum, on the left side, by raising a fascio-cutaneous lotus petal flap along the gluteal fold, based on two perforators...

BACKGROUND: Vulvodynia is a poorly understood chronic pain condition characterized by persistent and unexplained pain in the vulva. Given the intimate nature of the pain, partners may play an important role in promoting self-management and help-seeking behaviours among women with vulvodynia. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to explore the role of partner support in pain experiences and help-seeking behaviours among women with vulvodynia. DESIGN: A qualitative interpretive design was used...

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the challenges in diagnosing 46, XY disorder of sex development related to MYRF mutation. METHODS: We present an unusual case of a 12-year-old female child came for enlargement of clitoris and initially diagnosed as partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). RESULTS: On examination, the patient's vulva was found virilized with 3cm-long clitoris. Her peripheral blood karyotype was 46, XY. The ultrasound showed an empty pelvis and hormone results confirmed hyperandrogenism...

The anticancer drug Gefitinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with selectivity for the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR/ErbB1). As the C. elegans EGF receptor LET-23 shares notable structural homology over its kinase domain with human EGFR, we wished to examine whether Gefitinib treatment can interfere with LET-23-dependent processes. We show that Gefitinib disrupts C. elegans stress-induced sleep (SIS) but does not impact EGF overexpression-induced sleep nor vulva induction. These findings indicate that Gefitinib does not interfere with LET-23 signaling and impairs SIS through an off-target mechanism...

INTRODUCTION: This study presented the incidence and mortality rates of cancers affecting the female genital organs in China, along with their trends spanning from 2010 to 2018. METHODS: 700 population-based cancer registries provided relevant cancer incidence and mortality data for the year 2018. Among these, 106 registries had continuous monitoring data suitable for trend analysis from 2010 to 2018. We focused specifically on cancers affecting female genital organs (ICD10=C51-C54, C56) and projected their incidences and mortalities in China for 2022 based on data from 2018 and the trends observed from 2010 to 2018...

Cedar pollen is known as a typical allergen that causes various allergic symptoms in the nasal mucosa, conjunctiva, and skin. However, inflammation of the vulvar mucosa due to sensitization to cedar pollen is not well-known. We experienced two cases in which the detection of cedar pollen during microscopic urine sediment examination led to the diagnosis of allergic vulvovaginitis caused by cedar pollen. The cases involved a 4-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl. In both cases, the patients presented with chief complaints of pruritis in the vulva and insomnia due to frequent urination during the season of cedar pollen dissemination...

The acquisition of the post-mitotic state is crucial for the execution of many terminally differentiated cell behaviors during organismal development. However, the mechanisms that maintain the post-mitotic state in this context remain poorly understood. To gain insight into these mechanisms, we used the genetically and visually accessible model of C. elegans anchor cell (AC) invasion into the vulval epithelium. The AC is a terminally differentiated uterine cell that normally exits the cell cycle and enters a post-mitotic state before initiating contact between the uterus and vulva through a cell invasion event...

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is an adenocarcinoma arising from the skin or skin appendages which is sometimes associated with an underlying malignancy. EMPD is most commonly seen in the vulva, followed by perianal region, and the male genitalia. In most cases, patient presents with eczematous lesion persisting for long duration. A 77-year-old gentleman had a history of chronic eczematous lesion over penis and scrotum for the last 10 years. Examination revealed an erythematous plaque like eczematous lesion over the penis and scrotum...

Vulvar cancer is annually diagnosed in an estimated 6,470 individuals and the vast majority are histologically squamous cell carcinomas. Vulvar cancer accounts for 5% to 8% of gynecologic malignancies. Known risk factors for vulvar cancer include increasing age, infection with human papillomavirus, cigarette smoking, inflammatory conditions affecting the vulva, and immunodeficiency. Most vulvar neoplasias are diagnosed at early stages. Rarer histologies exist and include melanoma, extramammary Paget's disease, Bartholin gland adenocarcinoma, verrucous carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and sarcoma...

Locally advanced cancer of the vulva (LACV) is commonly diagnosed in older women (>65 years), and is treated using combined multimodality therapy (CMT) that includes radiation therapy (RT). Compliance to optimal RT metrics, including completion of > 20 fractions, overall treatment duration of < 8 weeks (56 days), and < 1 week intra-treatment break is associated with better disease outcomes. However, published results note that a significant number of patients with LACV do not adhere to these metrics...

She was treated with topical corticosteroids and intravenous vancomycin without significant improvement. On examination, dozens of follicular hemorrhagic papulopustules were detected at the suprapubic area and vulva (Figure 1). Similar but less prominent lesions were observed on the shins as well. Biopsies of the vulva and shin revealed a follicular inflammatory infiltrate of neutrophils, histiocytes, and lymphocytes as well as fungal hyphae within the follicular infundibulum and hair shafts, consistent with Majocchi's granuloma (MG)...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The vulva is the external portion of a gender-affirming vaginoplasty or vulvoplasty procedure-the "visible" result of surgery. The vulvar appearance can play a major role in how individuals feel about their surgical results and new genital anatomy. Therefore, optimizing the aesthetics of the vulva is an important component of surgical care. Although there is no one "ideal" vulvar appearance, aesthetics are optimal when each major sub-unit of the vulva is reconstructed to create a proportional and cohesive vulvar unit...

We undertook a retrospective observational review of patients referred to a tertiary dermatology department with vulval complaints over 12 months. The most common provisional diagnoses made by the referrer and final dermatology diagnoses were lichen sclerosus (54% and 38%), dermatitis (12.7% and 16.5%) and psoriasis (5.1% and 6.3%). Referrers may benefit from further education about skin diseases of the vulva, topical steroids for vulval complaints and the importance of clinical photography.
