Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) are progenitors of endothelial cells with significant proliferative and angiogenic ability. ECFCs are a promising treatment option for various diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and peripheral artery disease. However, some barriers hinder the clinical application of ECFC therapeutics. One of the current obstacles is that ECFCs are dysfunctional due to the underlying disease states. ECFCs exhibit dysfunctional phenotypes in pathologic states, which include but are not limited to the following: premature neonates and pregnancy-related diseases, diabetes mellitus, cancers, haematological system diseases, hypoxia, pulmonary arterial hypertension, coronary artery diseases, and other vascular diseases...

High fructose intake during pregnancy increases insulin resistance (IR) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk. IR during pregnancy primarily results from elevated hormone levels. We aim to determine the role of liver carbohydrate response element binding protein (ChREBP) in insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism in pregnant mice and their offspring. Pregnant C57BL/6J wild-type mice and hepatocyte-specific ChREBP-deficient mice were fed with a high-fructose diet (HFrD) or normal chow diet (NC) pre-delivery...

DESIGN: This paper is a single-centre, double-blinded, prospective randomised control trial, comparing immediate vs delayed implant placement clinically and radiographically in patients with chronic periodontitis, specifically assessing the molar region. Seventy-four patients were recruited to the study over a one-year period, all of whom returned for follow up throughout the study. STUDY SELECTION: The study adhered to the principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki and obtained ethical approval from the affiliated University Hospital of Qingdao...

STUDY QUESTION: How does a natural proliferative phase (NPP) strategy for frozen embryo transfer (FET) compare with the conventional artificial (AC) and natural (NC) endometrial preparation protocols in terms of live birth rates (LBR)? SUMMARY ANSWER: This study supports the hypothesis that, just as for NC, NPP-FET may be a superior alternative to AC in terms of LBR. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Although FETs are increasing worldwide, the optimal FET protocol is still largely controversial...

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a globally prevalent endocrinological disorder and has been associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, including a higher rate of gestational diabetes and miscarriage. Metformin is among the drugs investigated to improve the prognosis of pregnant women with PCOS. OBJECTIVE: To conduct an overview of systematic reviews examining the effects of metformin versus placebo or no intervention throughout pregnancy among pregnant women with a preconception PCOS diagnosis to reduce the incidence of miscarriage and gestational diabetes...

OBJECTIVE: Non-Hispanic Black people (NHBP) have a 3-fold higher rate of maternal mortality compared to other racial groups. Racial disparities in maternal morbidity are well described however there are substantial differences in cultural, economic, and social determinants of health among racial groups. We sought to study the, at-risk, non-Hispanic Black population as its own cohort to identify factors most associated with severe maternal morbidity (SMM). METHODS: This is a population-based retrospective case control study of all livebirths in the U...

OBJECTIVES: Severe polyhydramnios during pregnancy may be associated with long-term lithium use and presents considerable challenges. This complication, which has been linked to induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI), underscores the necessity for cautious management of pregnant women with bipolar disorder. This case report aims to elucidate the relationship between long-term lithium use, pregnancy, and the development of severe polyhydramnios, emphasizing the importance of diagnosing NDI in order to prevent obstetric and neonatal complications...

BACKGROUND: Pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and gestational weight gain (GWG) are interlinked and may play a complex role in fetal growth. We aimed to examine the relationship between pre-pregnancy BMI, GDM, GWG, and fetal growth outcomes and explore the contribution of GDM and GWG to the relationship between Pre-pregnancy obesity/overweight and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) in a prospective cohort. METHODS: We prospectively recruited women in the first trimester and having one-step GDM screened with a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation ( n  = 802)...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index in early pregnancy and the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in the second trimester. The primary objectives were to evaluate the predictive potential of the TyG index for GDM, determine the optimal threshold value of the TyG index for GDM assessment, and compare the predictive performance of the TyG index alone versus its combination with maternal age and pre-pregnancy body mass index on GDM...

BACKGROUND: 4-20% of people report using cannabis during pregnancy, thereby it is essential to assess the associated risks. There is some evidence that prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) may be associated with increased risk for developing of obesity and diabetes later in life, however this has not been well explored under controlled conditions. The aim of this study was to use a translational THC vapor model in rodents to characterize the effects of PCE on adiposity, glucose metabolism, and feeding patterns in adulthood, with focus on potential sex differences...

However, studies of multiple CGM metrics combined and their association with other adverse pregnancy outcomes are limited. Despite advances in systemic care, diabetic disease of the eye (DDE) remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide. There is a critical gap of up-to-date, evidence-based guidance for ophthalmologists in Canada that includes evidence from recent randomized controlled trials. Previous guidance has not always given special consideration to applying treatments and managing DDE in the context of the healthcare system. This consensus statement aims to assist practitioners in the field by providing a spectrum of acceptable opinions on DDE treatment and management from recognized experts in the field...

Obesity and gestational diabetes (GDM) impact fetal growth during pregnancy. Iron is an essential micronutrient needed for energy-intense feto-placental development, but if mis-handled can lead to oxidative stress and ferroptosis (iron-dependent cell death). In a mouse model showing maternal obesity and glucose intolerance, we investigated the association of materno-fetal iron handling and placental ferroptosis, oxidative damage and stress signalling activation with fetal growth. Female mice were fed a standard chow or high fat, high sugar (HFHS) diet during pregnancy and outcomes were measured at day (d)16 or d19 of pregnancy...

Research documenting the public health impacts of natural disasters often focuses on adults and children. Little research has examined the influence of extreme events, like floods, on maternal health, and less has examined the effect of disasters on maternal indicators like severe maternal morbidity (SMM) or unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that result in significant short-or long-term consequences to a woman's health. The aim of this study is to identify the impacts of the 2015 flood events on maternal health outcomes in South Carolina, USA...
