Many barriers to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing among Black people exist. This study analysed the association between race/skin colour and lifetime HIV testing among adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM) and transgender women (ATGW) in three Brazilian cities. This cross-sectional study was nested within the PrEP1519 cohort, a multicentre study of AMSM and ATGW aged 15-19 years in Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and São Paulo, Brazil. The outcome variable was the lifetime HIV testing (no or yes)...

Continuous efforts are ongoing to discover new luminescent materials with appropriate properties for applications in medicine, serving as theranostic agents for healing and bioimaging. In this paper, novel single-phase carbonated calcium chlorapatite (Ca10 (PO4 )5 (CO3 )Cl2 , abbreviated as CaClAp-CO3 ) phosphors activated with varying concentrations of Sm3+ ions were successfully fabricated using both co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods to investigate the influence of the synthesis techniques on the physicochemical properties of these materials...

Concrete infrastructure in coastal waters is increasing. While adding complex habitat and manipulating concrete mixtures to enhance biodiversity have been studied, field investigations of sub-millimetre-scale complexity and substrate colour are lacking. Here, the interacting effects of 'colour' (white, grey, black) and 'microtexture' (smooth, 0.5 mm texture) on colonisation were assessed at three sites in Australia. In Townsville, no effects of colour or microtexture were observed. In Sydney, spirorbid polychaetes occupied more space on smooth than textured tiles, but there was no effect of microtexture on serpulid polychaetes, bryozoans and algae...

The assessment of children's grammatical skills is a crucial component of diagnosing language disorders. Elicited production is a commonly used method for obtaining data on a child's productive language abilities. We introduce a new instrument developed as part of the third edition of a standardised test battery for German. This instrument utilises elicited production, wherein participants describe coloured pictures depicting everyday situations, in order to generate four test scores: mean length of utterances, completeness of utterances, and two grammar scores comprising relevant target structures...

Four salts of an anionic iron(III) bis-complex, [Fe(LL-thr )2 ]1- , were synthesized from water or methanol. H2 LL-thr is a tridentate ligand derived from the L-threonine amino acid, and the cations used are Li+ (1), Na+ (2), K+ (3), and Ba2+ (4). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed that all the complexes are coordination polymers of different dimensionalities. The iron(III) complex binds to cations through its coordinated phenolate and non-coordinated carboxylate oxygen atoms. While Li+ forms a linear chain, all others have a pair of bridged cations intervening the iron(III) complexes...

In the textile industry, textile materials are dyed and multi-functionalised by multi-step treatments that considerably increase the environmental impacts by increasing water and energy usage along with increasing the generation of volume of effluent. In this work, Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were in situ formed and stabilised with gallnut, feijoa fruit skin, and mango seed kernel-derived tannins, and wool fabrics were coated simultaneously with these Ag NPs in the same bath. The Ag NP treatment produced dark to light olive-brown shades on wool fabrics...

This study aimed to investigate the toxic and transcriptomic effects of the ultraviolet filter benzophenone-3 (BP-3) on Acropora tenuis and its symbiotic dinoflagellates while using acetone as a solvent. Seven-day exposure to 50 and 500 μg/L, which is higher than most BP-3 records from coastal waters, did not affect coral colour or dinoflagellate photosynthesis. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between seawater and solvent controls were <20 in both corals and dinoflagellates. Eleven coral DEGs were detected after treatment with 50 μg/L BP-3...

The overuse of tetracycline (TC) has led to the accumulation of antibiotic residues in drinking water and animal products, which can consequently lead to bacteria resistance and chronic disease in humans. Urgently addressing the need for a rapid, user-friendly, and point-of-care test for TC detection. In this work, we use cyclen and citric acid to synthesise carbon dots (CDs) with a unique ring-shaped structure on their surface and combine them with europium (Eu3+ ) to form an Eu-CDs fluorescent probe. In the presence of TC in aqueous systems, the Eu-CDs probe emits two distinctive fluorescent signals: the stable blue emission from cyclen-modified CDs and the red emission from Eu3+ ,showing a proportional increase with TC concentration...

Gold and silver nanoparticles have witnessed increased scientific interest due to their colourful colloidal solutions and exceptional applications. Comparing the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold and silver nanoparticles is crucial for understanding and optimizing their optical properties. This comparison informs the design of highly sensitive plasmonic sensors, aids in selecting the most suitable nanoparticles for applications like surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy (SEIRA) and biomedical imaging, and guides the choice between gold and silver nanoparticles based on their catalytic and photothermal properties...

For most untrained novices, talking about wine or imagining the smells and flavours of wine is difficult. Wine experts, on the other hand, have been found to have better imagery for wine, and are also more proficient in describing wine. Some scholars have suggested that imagery and language are based on similar underlying processes, but no conclusive evidence has been found regarding mental imagery and language production. In this study, we examined the relationship between imagery and language use in both novices and experts...

There is limited research on the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in canned seafood. All types of canned seafood investigated in the present study were contaminated. After sample digestion in 30 % hydrogen peroxide, a total of 40 MPs were recovered. Fibers were the most common type, blue was the dominant colour, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) identified polyester as the most common polymer. Considering all samples, an average of 3.5 ± 5.2 MPs/can was obtained, with octopus in tomato sauce and tuna in olive oil presenting the highest contamination (5...

A total of 60 rabbits at 90 days of age were used in the experiment. At slaughter, meat physicochemical and sensory characteristics were measured on Longissimus lumborum muscle. Healthcare professionals should be trained to recognise symptoms of diverse skin tones, and comprehensive, and inclusive guidance is necessary for the safe assessment of all infants. Photon upconversion is a method for harnessing high-energy excited states from low-energy photons. Such photons, particularly in the red and near-infrared wavelength ranges, can penetrate tissue deeply and undergo less competitive absorption in coloured reaction media, enhancing the efficiency of large-scale reactions and in vivo phototherapy. Among various upconversion methodologies, the organic-based triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) stands out - demonstrating high upconversion efficiencies, requiring low excitation power densities and featuring tunable absorption and emission wavelengths...
