BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic activities significantly contribute to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a substantial threat to humankind. The development of methods that allow robust ARG surveillance is a long-standing challenge. Here, we use city-scale monitoring of ARGs by using two of the most promising cutting-edge technologies, digital PCR (dPCR) and metagenomics. METHODS: ARG hot-spots were sampled from the urban water and wastewater distribution systems...

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is considered a social norm in many African societies, with varying prevalence among countries. Mali is one of the eight countries with very high prevalence of FGM/C in Africa. This study assessed the individual and contextual factors associated with female FGM/C among girls aged 0-14 years in Mali. METHODS: We obtained data from the 2018 Mali Demographic and Health Survey. The prevalence of FGM/C in girls was presented using percentages while a multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the predictors of FGM/C and the results were presented using adjusted odds ratios with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs)...

BACKGROUND: The azygos lobe is a relatively rare anatomical variation, and there have been no reports, until date, of thoracoscopic McKeown esophagectomy for esophageal cancer in a patient with an azygos lobe. The azygos lobe can be diagnosed by chest X-ray or CT, and is usually not associated with any symptoms. However, surgeons should be aware that transthoracic surgical procedures in patients with an azygos lobe could be associated with a high risk of complications. CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-years-old man was brought to our emergency room with fever, severe headache, and difficulty in moving...

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and manual tests remain the standard for diagnosing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. Furthermore, the passive knee displacement, also described as anterior tibial translation (ATT), is used in order to make decisions about surgery or to assess rehabilitation outcomes. Unfortunately, these manual tests are limited to passive situations, and their application to assess knee stability in loaded, weight-bearing positions are missing. Therefore, a new device with high-performance sensors and a new sensor setting was developed...

The C-reactive protein (CRP)-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index has been established as an immuno-nutritional scoring system. The aim of this study was to clarify the impact of the preoperative CALLY index on the outcome of patients undergoing gastrectomy for gastric cancer. To address issues of high water content and low calorific value during combustion of municipal sludge, we added water-absorbent, easy-to-burn agricultural waste to improve the overall combustion performance. Cotton straw or corn stover were added to the sludge and mixed at high-speed to compare their capacities for improving combustion performance. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed that cotton straw or corn stover attached to the surface of the municipal sludge particles after blending, while analysis of thermogravimetric curves and activation energies of the blends showed that combustion and exhaustion rates increased significantly when 40% cotton straw or corn stover were blended into the sludge...

OBJECTIVE: The C reactive protein polymyalgia rheumatica activity score (CRP-PMR-AS) is a composite index that includes CRP levels and was developed specifically for PMR. As treatments such as interleukin-6 antagonists can normalise CRP levels, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of PMR-AS, the clinical (clin)-PMR-AS and the imputed-CRP (imp-CRP)-PMR-AS have been developed to avoid such bias. Our primary objective was to measure the correlation of these activity scores. Our secondary objective was to evaluate the concordance between different cutoffs of the PMR-ASs...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging contaminants. Compared with short-chain PFAS, long-chain PFAS are more hazardous. Currently, little attention has been paid to the differences in reaction mechanisms between long-chain and short-chain PFAS. This pressing concern has prompted studies about eliminating PFAS and revealing the mechanism difference. The reaction rate and reaction mechanism of each technology was focused on, including (1) adsorption, (2) ion exchange (IX), (3) membrane filtration, (4) advanced oxidation, (5) biotransformation, (6) novel functional material, and (7) other technologies (e...

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) presents a formidable viral challenge in swine husbandry. Confronting the constraints of existing veterinary pharmaceuticals and vaccines, this investigation centers on Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) as a prospective clinical suppressant for the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV). The study adopts an integrated methodology to evaluate CAPE's antiviral attributes. This encompasses a dual-phase analysis of CAPE's interaction with PRRSV, both in vitro and in vivo, and an examination of its influence on viral replication...
