BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an Epstein-Barr virus-associated epithelial malignancy, which is rare in America but endemic in China. The current clinical gold TNM-based standard for prognosis may not be enough. Although some studies have reported that some miRNAs have a prognostic power in NPC, there is a scarcity of independent validation for these miRNAs. METHODS: In this work, we firstly conducted a literature review of all miRNA profiling datasets with survival information, then integrated miRNA expression data across different profiling platforms and built prognostic models using machine learning methods...

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the exciting emergence of circulating miRNAs as stable, reproducible, and consistent among individuals has opened a promising research opportunity for the detection of non-invasive biomarkers. A firm connection has been established between circulating miRNAs and glycaemic as well as metabolic homeostasis, showing that levels of specific miRNAs vary under different physio-pathological conditions. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we investigated the expression of candidate miRNAs, hsa-miR-191-3p and hsa-miR-375, in relation to biomarkers associated with insulin sensitivity in a subgroup (n=58) of subjects participating to the European I...

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) can be biomarkers for diagnosis and progression of several pathophysiological conditions. In a cohort undergoing total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) from the multicenter Prospective Observational Study of TPIAT (POST), we investigated associations between a panel of circulating miRNAs (hsa-miR-375, hsa-miR-29b-3p, hsa-miR-148a-3p, hsa-miR-216a-5p, hsa-miR-320d, hsa-miR-200c, hsa-miR-125b, hsa-miR-7-5p, hsa-miR-221-3p, hsa-miR-122-5p) and patient, disease and islet-isolation characteristics...

Although many genes and miRNAs have been reported for various cancers, pancreatic cancer's specific genes or miRNAs have not been studied precisely yet. Therefore, we have analyzed the gene and miRNA expression profile of pancreatic cancer data in the gene expression omnibus (GEO) database. The microarray-derived miRNAs and mRNAs were annotated by gene ontology (GO) and signaling pathway analysis. We also recognized mRNAs that were targeted by miRNA through the mirDIP database. An integrated analysis of the microarray revealed that only 6 out of 43 common miRNAs had significant differences in their expression profiles between the tumor and normal groups (P value < 0...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate the expression of genes associated with the development of diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the use of miRNAs to predict T2DM remission has been poorly studied. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether circulating miRNAs could be used to predict the probability of T2DM remission in patients with coronary heart disease. We included the newly diagnosed T2DM (n = 190) of the 1,002 patients from the CORDIOPREV study. Seventy-three patients reverted from T2DM after 5 years of dietary intervention with a low-fat or Mediterranean diet...

BACKGROUND: In order to characterize the various subtypes of breast cancer more precisely and improve patients selection for breast conserving therapy (BCT), molecular profiling has gained importance over the past two decades. MicroRNAs, which are small non-coding RNAs, can potentially regulate numerous downstream target molecules and thereby interfere in carcinogenesis and treatment response via multiple pathways. The aim of the current two-phase study was to investigate whether hsa-miR-375-signaling through RASD1 could predict local control (LC) in early breast cancer...

Despite the availability of screening programs, oral cancer deaths are increasing due to the lack of diagnostic biomarkers leading to late diagnosis and a poor prognosis. Therefore, there is an urgent need to discover novel effective biomarkers for this tumor. On these bases, the aim of this study was to validate the diagnostic potential of microRNAs (miRNAs) through the analysis of liquid biopsy samples obtained from ten oral cancer patients and ten healthy controls. The expression of four selected miRNAs was evaluated by using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) in a pilot cohort of ten oral cancer patients and ten healthy donors...

Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is a promising treatment for refractory chronic pancreatitis (CP). Pathological features of CP include progressive fibrosis in pancreas parenchyma, atrophy, and/or ductal occlusion. Complete acinar atrophy (CAA) caused by chronic fibrosis and necroinflammation results in exocrine sufficiency and may influence islet isolation characteristics during TPIAT. In this analysis of patients who underwent TPIAT at our center, we compared transplant outcomes among those with CAA ( n = 5) vs non-acinar atrophy (NAA; matching controls, n = 36)...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators that play important biological roles in carcinogenesis and are promising biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and therapy. hsa-miR-375-3p (miR-375) has been suggested to serve as a tumor suppressor or oncogene in various tumor types; however, its specific expression and potential regulatory role in malignant breast cancer remain unclear. In this study, the results from noncoding RNA microarray analysis indicated that the miR-375 expression level is significantly decreased in malignant basal-like breast cancer compared with luminal-like breast cancer...

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Pancreatic islets produce non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) that regulate islet cell function and survival. Our earlier investigations revealed that human islets undergo significant damage due to various types of stresses following transplantation and release miRNAs. Here, we sought to identify and validate exosomal miRNAs (exo-miRNAs) produced by human islets under conditions of cellular stress, preceding loss of cell function and death. We also aimed to identify islet stress signalling pathways targeted by exo-miRNAs to elucidate potential regulatory roles in islet cell stress...

Gastric cancer (GC) is a malignant tumor that affects individuals worldwide, and miRNA and mRNA are closely connected to this disease. However, it is still unclear how these molecules affect GC and whether their effects are associated with circRNA in GC patients. Therefore, we obtained the miRNA, mRNA and circRNA expression profiles of GC patients from the GEO database. For comparison, shared miRNAs and mRNAs from the results of microarrays were annotated by gene ontology (GO) and pathway analysis. We also identified mRNAs that were targeted by miRNA through TargetScan 7...
