The benefits of radiotherapy for colorectal cancer are well documented, but the impact of adjuvant radiotherapy on early-stage rectal adenocarcinoma remains unclear. This study aimed to identify predictors of overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with stage II rectal adenocarcinoma treated with preoperative or postoperative radiation therapy. Patients with early-stage rectal adenocarcinoma in the postoperative state were identified using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database...

d-Glucuronyl C5-epimerase (GLCE) is one of key enzymes in heparan sulfate biosynthesis and possesses tumour-suppressor function in breast carcinogenesis. Here, we investigated a potential involvement of GLCE polymorphism(s) in breast cancer development in Siberian women population. Comprehensive analysis of SNP databases revealed GLCE rs3865014 (Val597Ile) missense polymorphism as the main significantly present in human populations. According the TaqMan-based SNP assay, allele distributions for the rs3865014 (A>G) were similar in healthy Siberian women (n=136) and cancer patients (n=129) (A0,73:G0,27) and intermediate between the European and Asian populations, while genotype distributions were different, with the increase of AG rate in breast cancer patients (OR=1...

SCOPE: Phytoestrogens (PE) may improve breast cancer prognosis by modifying tumor prognostic markers, such as cell proliferation marker Ki-67 and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Epidemiological evidence linking lignans and isoflavones to Ki-67 and HER2 is limited. We examined associations between the major metabolites of lignans and isoflavones - enterolactone (ENL) and genistein (GEN) - respectively, and Ki-67 expression and HER2 in tumor tissue of breast cancer patients...

Ependymoma is the third most common brain tumor in children, but there is a paucity of large studies with more than 10 years of follow-up examining the long-term survival and recurrence patterns of this disease. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 103 pediatric patients with WHO Grades II/III intracranial ependymoma, who were treated at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and Chicago's Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital between 1985 and 2008, and an additional 360 ependymoma patients identified from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database...

The role of surgery of the primary cancer and radiation in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is still controversial currently, and evidence implied that colon cancer (CC) and rectal cancer (RC) should be treated with difference. Hence we focused on metastatic rectal cancer (mRC) solely to compare the cancer cause-specific survival (CSS) of patients receiving varied treatments of the primary cancer: no treatment, surgery only, radiation only, and surgery plus radiation, based on the records of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database...

The interactions between pregnancy and breast cancer (BC) are complex. Overall, parity is associated with long-term protective effects against BC, however in a small group of susceptible patients, pregnancy can lead to the development of a form of BC with a particularly poor prognosis. Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) remains an under-studied but important and growing clinical problem worldwide. Several aspects of PABC, including risk factors and mechanisms involved in its occurrence and aggressiveness, are incompletely understood...

In the U.S. general population, incidence of colorectal cancer appears to be increasing in younger age groups since the mid-1980s. The objective of this report was to better understand the time-varying elements (age, period, and birth cohort effects) in the epidemiology of colorectal cancer among the active component of the U.S. Armed Forces. During 1997-2016, there were 1,108 incident cases of colorectal cancer among service members aged 20-59 years, corresponding to an overall incidence rate of 4.3 per 100,000 person-years (p-yrs)...

Secondary tumors of the ovary account for 10-25% of all ovarian malignancies. The most common tumors that give rise to ovarian metastases include breast, colorectal, endometrial, stomach, and appendix cancer. The correct diagnosis of secondary ovarian tumors may be challenging as they are not infrequently misdiagnosed as primary ovarian cancer, particularly in the case of mucinous adenocarcinomas. The distinction from the latter is essential, as it requires different treatment. Immunohistochemistry plays an important role in distinguishing primary ovarian tumors from extra-ovarian metastases and, furthermore, may suggest the primary tumor site...

The pathogenesis of gastric cancer regardless of histological structure is a classic example of gene-environment interaction, and an important epidemiological aspect was the recognized association with Helicobacter pylori infection. This paper describes a case of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in a young patient whose first sign of the disease was upper gastrointestinal bleeding and associated hemorrhagic shock. The patient is a 31-year-old man, diagnosed by endoscopy 10 years ago with H...

BACKGROUND: Population datasets and the Internet are playing an ever-growing role in the way cancer information is made available to providers, patients, and their caregivers. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Cancer Survival Calculator (SEER*CSC) is a Web-based cancer prognostic tool that uses SEER data, a large population dataset, to provide physicians with highly valid, evidence-based prognostic estimates for increasing shared decision-making and improving patient-provider communication of complex health information...

INTRODUCTION: Non-small-cell lung cancer outcomes are poor but heterogeneous, even within stage groups. To improve prognostic precision we aimed to develop and validate a simple prognostic model using patient and disease variables. METHODS: Prospective registry and study data were analysed using Cox proportional hazards regression to derive a prognostic model (hospital 1, n=695), which was subsequently tested (Harrell's c-statistic for discrimination and Cox-Snell residuals for calibration) in two independent validation cohorts (hospital 2, n=479 and hospital 3, n=284)...
