Systematic transrectal ultrasonography (US)-guided biopsy is the standard approach for histopathologic diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, this technique has multiple limitations because of its inability to accurately visualize and target prostate lesions. Multiparametric magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the prostate is more reliably able to localize significant prostate cancer. Targeted prostate biopsy by using MR imaging may thus help to reduce false-negative results and improve risk assessment. Several commercial devices are now available for targeted prostate biopsy, including in-gantry MR imaging-targeted biopsy and real-time transrectal US-MR imaging fusion biopsy systems...

This study evaluated the effect of initial GnRH and timing of AI in a 5-d Co-synch plus CIDR (device containing 1.38 g of progesterone) protocol on pregnancy per AI (P/AI) and pregnancy loss in beef heifers. A secondary objective was to determine if the effect of initial GnRH on reproductive performance was influenced by cyclicity. Crossbred beef heifers (n = 1068; 301-514 kg of body weight, and 13-15 mo of age) at three locations were assigned to either a 5-d Co-synch plus CIDR protocol with (CIDR5G) or without (CIDR5NG) an initial injection of 100 μg of GnRH at CIDR insertion (Day 0)...

Approximately 20 to 30% of cows diagnosed not pregnant 32 d after timed artificial insemination (TAI) lack a corpus luteum (CL), and cows submitted to a resynchronization protocol in the absence of a CL have about 10% fewer pregnancies per AI (P/AI) than cows with a CL. An understanding of luteal dynamics after synchronization of ovulation and TAI may help refine strategies for reinseminating cows failing to conceive. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 141) were synchronized for first TAI using a Double-Ovsynch protocol...

Accurate diagnosis of pregnancy is an essential component of an effective reproductive management plan for dairy cattle. Indirect methods of pregnancy detection can be performed soon after breeding and offer an advantage over traditional direct methods in not requiring an experienced veterinarian and having potential for automation. The objective of this study was to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) detection ELISA and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) in dairy cows of South Africa using a Bayesian latent class approach...

PURPOSE: Imaging plays a crucial role in ablative therapies for prostate cancer (PCa). Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a new treatment modality used for focal treatment of PCa. We aimed to demonstrate what imaging modalities can be used by descriptively reporting contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI), and grey-scale transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) results. Furthermore, we aimed to correlate quantitatively the ablation zone seen on mpMRI and CEUS with treatment planning to provide therapy feedback...

Persistent mating-induced endometritis (PMIE) results in decreased fertility in horses, thereby causing a significant impact in the horse market. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a modulator of the inflammatory response, has been largely used in veterinary medicine. Here, we investigated the effects of PRP on uterine inflammation, conception rate, endometrial polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) migration, and COX-2 protein levels in the endometrial tissue. Thirteen PMIE-susceptible mares were used for artificial insemination (AI)...

Intrauterine infusion of peanut oil at Day 10 post-ovulation has been reported to prolong dioestrus in mares. However, the effects of peanut oil treatment on the endometrium and whether the technique is painful have not been assessed. The objectives of this study were, (i) to determine the effect of intrauterine infusion of peanut oil on endometrial health, (ii) to determine whether use of intrauterine peanut oil is painful and (iii) to confirm that peanut oil causes prolonged dioestrus. Six mares aged 3-12 years old were used in a cross-over design with each mare administered both 1 ml of intrauterine peanut oil and a sham treatment on different oestrous cycles...

Urethral stones can become impacted in the posterior urethra, typically presenting with varying degrees of acute urinary retention and lower urinary tract symptoms. These are traditionally treated in the inpatient setting, with external urethrotomy or endoscopic push-back of the calculus into the urinary bladder followed by cystolitholapaxy or cystolithotripsy. However, these methods are invasive, involve general anesthesia, and require radiation. In this report, we describe a simple, minimally invasive, and safe alternative technique to visualize and remove impacted prostatic urethral stones under the real-time guidance of transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)...

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the most frequent cancer in men. The diagnosis is normally achieved by a systematic prostate biopsy; however, this is a randomized approach by which a substantial number of significant carcinomas go undetected. For this reason, in recent years imaging techniques have been continuously developed, which enable visualization and therefore targeted biopsies. STANDARD PROCEDURE: The use of systematic biopsies is a standard procedure for the detection of prostate cancer...
