Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a human right. Young people, particularly from marginalised groups such as migrant and refugees, are vulnerable to compromised sexual and reproductive health and rights. In this study, we aimed to identify socioecological factors influencing migrant and refugee youth SRH decision-making and compare perspectives of youth with key stakeholders. Data were collected using Group Concept Mapping (GCM), a mixed-methods participatory approach. Participants included migrant and refugee young people, aged 16-26 from Western Sydney ( n  = 55), and key stakeholders comprising clinicians, service providers and researchers ( n  = 13)...

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on everyday life and in general, reduced the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of adolescents. In this study, we assess the HRQoL of adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Germany since the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic by using self-report and parent-proxy reports, to identify risk factors, to compare to peers and to examine the agreement of HRQoL between parents and their children. METHODS: A total of 445 adolescents (12-18 years) and 413 parents participated in an anonymous cross-sectional survey conducted at three German diabetes centres from January 2021 to June 2022...

Women of Turkish and Moroccan origin in the Netherlands are relatively likely to have an unhealthy bodyweight. This study sheds light on how ethnic differences in parity, i.e., the number of times a female carried pregnancies to a viable gestational age, contribute to body mass index (BMI) differences between Turkish-born and Moroccan-born mothers aged 35 + and their native Dutch counterparts. We applied a Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition approach to pooled data from four migrant surveys based on national probability samples (n = 2,532)...

Migration is selective, resulting in inequalities between migrants and nonmigrants. However, investigating migration selection is empirically challenging because combined pre- and post-migration data are rarely available. We propose an alternative approach to assessing internal migration selection by integrating genetic data, enabling an investigation of migration selection with cross-sectional data collected post-migration. Using data from the UK Biobank, we utilized standard tools from statistical genetics to conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for migration distance...

Not all mothers and newborns have equal opportunities for a healthy motherhood and a healthy start. Differences exist in various diversity characteristics such as low socioeconomic status, migration background, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability. In addition to a range of increased health risks for mothers and newborns, barriers in the care process, such as lack of awareness of the specific needs and interaction problems between clients and professionals, hinder the utilization of obstetric and maternity services...

BACKGROUND: Although the health of the floating elderly population is an important part of active and healthy ageing, it is neglected in current Chinese society. Based on the general consensus that social interaction can affect the health of the floating population, this study explored whether the interaction type, mode and frequency influenced the health of the floating elderly population in China and investigated the variability of these influential effects. METHODS: This study used the China Migrant Population Dynamic Survey Data 2017 and selected 5239 floating elderly individuals over 60 years old...

Black women in the UK face significantly higher risks of overweight and obesity and adverse pregnancy outcomes compared to women from other ethnic groups. Maternal nutrition plays a pivotal role in influencing the health outcomes of women and their children, especially during preconception and pregnancy. Cultural and environmental factors significantly influence the dietary experiences of African women after migration. This study explored the unique nutrition-related challenges faced by African migrant pregnant and postnatal women in the UK, and their nutrition support needs...

Aim : Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide including Libya, where they account for 43% of all deaths. Sphingolipids are involved in the pathology of numerous diseases including cardiovascular diseases and are proposed as potential biomarkers of cardiovascular health that could be more effective compared to traditional clinical biomarkers. The aim of this study was to determine the sphingolipid content in the erythrocyte membrane of Libyan migrant and Serbian resident women...

Fishing communities around Lake Victoria have among the highest burdens of HIV globally. Growing evidence suggests that high HIV prevalence is partially due to selective migration of people living with HIV to fishing communities. However, the reasons for this preferential migration are unclear. We recruited 60 men and women for qualitative in-depth interviews (30% living with HIV; 70% recent migrants of unknown HIV status) from seven Ugandan fishing communities. Interviews discussed mobility histories and the social context surrounding migration...

Becoming elderly is an intrinsic part of life, and the burden of disease increases with age. However, the early life migration experience and occupational hazards at the destination can lead to serious health problems later in life. This study aims to understand the association between early life migration and the health and risky behavior of elderly return migrants using data from the Kerala Migration Survey in 2018. The results of bivariate and multivariate analyses show that the majority of migrants return due to retirement and ill health at the average age of 51 and suffer from poor health and multiple diseases...

We use a unique data set from Spain and we estimate life expectancy at age 50 for males and females by place of residence and place of birth. We show that, consistent with expectations regarding the influence of early conditions on adult health and mortality, the effects of place of birth on adult mortality are very strong, irrespective of place of residence. Furthermore, we find that mortality levels observed in a place are strongly influenced by the composition of migrants by place of birth. This is reflected in a new measure of heritability of early childhood conditions that attains a value in the range 0...

BACKGROUND: A low educational level and poor economic status have repeatedly been identified as the main risk factors of peripartum depression among migrant women in existing studies. However, there is limited knowledge about a group of highly educated and middle-class migrant women, and how this group of migrant women deals with those risks and which protective factors facilitate a successful transition into motherhood in the host country. This study aims to shed light on the multifaceted psychosocial challenges during the peripartum period for Chinese migrant women in their relationships with intimate partners, mothers, and mothers-in-law...

The number of migrants, which includes forcibly displaced refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented persons, is increasing worldwide. The global migrant population is heterogeneous in terms of medical conditions and vulnerability resulting from non-optimal metabolic risk factors in the country of origin (e.g., abnormal adiposity, dysglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia), adverse travel conditions and the resulting stress, poverty, and anxiety, and varying effects of acculturation and access to healthcare services in the country of destination...

The probability of having multiple chronic conditions simultaneously, or multimorbidity, tends to increase with age. Immigrants face a particularly high risk of unhealthy ageing. This study investigates the immigrant-native disparities in the speed of age-related chronic disease accumulation, focusing on the number of chronic health conditions; and considers the heterogeneity of this trajectory within immigrant populations by origin and receiving country. We use data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe from 2004 to 2020 on adults aged 50 to 79 from 28 European countries and employ both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses...
