The prevalence of atrial flutter (AFL) is increasing among the elderly population, and managing this condition presents specific challenges within this demographic. As patients age, they often exhibit reduced responsiveness to conservative treatment, necessitating a more invasive approach. We present a case of a 93-year-old female who presented to the hospital with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and AFL. A year prior, she was diagnosed with arrhythmia-induced cardiomyopathy. Despite recovering her ejection fraction (EF) through guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT), her EF deteriorated again...

We report a case of a 78-year-old male with a complex presentation that first diverted our attention from the underlying hereditary haemochromatosis (HH). A fit patient who initially came with leg pain and eventually died within 3 months of presenting with several syndromes relatable to HH that uncommonly manifest together. His initial presentation was pyomyositis in the thigh muscles followed by a diagnosis of myelodysplasia - refractory anaemia with excess blasts (RAEB), congestive cardiac failure and liver abscesses...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the absence of a gold standard or scientific consensus regarding the nutritional evaluation of heart failure (HF) patients, this study aimed to summarize and systematically evaluate the prognostic value of nutritional screening and assessment tools used for all-cause mortality in HF patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Relevant studies were retrieved from major databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang Data, and China Biology Medicine disc (CMB)) and searched from the earliest available date until July 2021...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
Lei Cheng, Xiao-fang Tang
OBJECTIVE: To observe the efficacy of levocarnitine in treating elderly patients with chronic heart failure and to explore its impact on cardiac function and endocrine. METHODS: 120 elderly patients with chronic heart failure were randomly divided into observation and control groups, with 60 cases of each. Patients in the control group were given conventional anti-heart failure drugs, and those in the observation group were given 3 g levocarnitine within 250 ml normal saline for intravenous infusion added to what had been given to the control group...
