BACKGROUND: Typhoid vaccination has been shown to be an effective intervention to prevent enteric fever and is under consideration for inclusion in the national immunization program in Lao PDR. METHODS: A cost-utility analysis was performed using an age-structured static decision tree model to estimate the costs and health outcomes of introducing TCV. Vaccination strategies combined with five delivery approaches in different age groups compared to no vaccination were considered from the societal perspective, using the Gavi price of 1...

In Asia, there are an estimated 12 million annual cases of enteric fever, a potentially fatal systemic bacterial infection caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi (STy) and Paratyphi A (SPA). The recent availability of typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCV), an increasing incidence of disease caused by SPA and growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across the genus Salmonella makes a bivalent STy/SPA vaccine a useful public health proposition. The uptake of a stand-alone paratyphoid vaccine is likely low thus, there is a pipeline of bivalent STy/SPA candidate vaccines...

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a rare pediatric condition associated with significant mortality and morbidity. PVS in patients following heart transplant (HT) has not yet been described. METHODS: Patients who had clinically significant PVS following a heart transplant during the time period of April 1, 2013 to April 30, 2023, at Seattle Children's Hospital were identified. Clinically significant PVS was defined as an atretic vein or a vein with a gradient of ≥4 mmHg across at least one vein by echocardiogram or during cardiac catheterization...

Precision Livestock Farming technologies have increased the availability of on-farm data collected from dairy operations, such as automatic milk feeding machines. We analyzed feeding records from AMF to evaluate the genetic background of milk feeding traits and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in North American Holstein calves. Data from 10,076 pre-weaned female Holstein calves were collected daily over a period of 6 years (3 years included per-visit data) and daily milk consumption (DMC) and per-visit milk consumption (PVMC), daily sum of drinking duration (DSDD), drinking duration per-visit (DDPV), daily number of rewarded visits (DNRV), and total number of visits per day (TNV) were recorded over a 60-d pre-weaning period...

BACKGROUND: The mean 4-h dialysate to plasma ratio of creatinine (4-h D/Pcr) is a vital cutoff value for recognizing the fast peritoneal solute transfer rate (PSTR) in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD); however, it shows a noticeable centre effect. We aimed to investigate our centre-calculated cutoff value (CCV) of 4-h D/Pcr and compare it with the traditional cutoff value (TCV) (0.65). METHODS: In this study, we enrolled incident PD patients at our centre from 2008 to 2019, and divided them into fast or non-fast PSTR groups according to baseline 4-h D/Pcr-based CCV or TCV...

Coal-ash-associated problems seriously limit the industrial application of entrained flow coal gasification. There have been many studies of this issue. However, many problems still need to be fully understood, especially regarding the effect of minor oxides and residual carbon on the crystallization of slag in coal ash systems. Crystals formed in slag affect the slag properties, especially its viscosity. This article reviews the crystallization behavior of coal ash slag and its impact on ash fusion temperature (AFT) and temperature of critical viscosity (Tcv )...

Plants are challenged by various pathogens throughout their lives, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and insects; consequently, they have evolved several defense mechanisms. In addition, plants have developed localized and systematic immune responses due to biotic and abiotic stress exposure. Animals are known to activate DNA damage responses (DDRs) and DNA damage sensor immune signals in response to stress, and the process is well studied in animal systems. However, the links between stress perception and immune response through DDRs remain largely unknown in plants...

In this paper, a diagnostic for the measurement of the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) from non-thermal electrons in magnetically confined fusion plasmas is presented. The diagnostic employs a vertical viewing line of sight that allows us to directly infer the energy of the emitting electrons. Previous incarnations of this diagnostic on other machines have been limited by refraction, which can cause stray radiation to enter the line of sight, polluting the signal. By tuning the toroidal magnetic field on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable, TCV, and by carefully selecting the range of frequencies that are used to measure the ECE spectrum, refraction can be mitigated and background radiation power reduced to below the noise power of the instrumentation...

BACKGROUND: Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is often used as an adjuvant treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). However, the effect of RAI therapy on cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with tall cell variant (TCV) remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the impact of RAI therapy on CSS in TCV-PTC patients by analyzing data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: We identified 1,281 TCV-PTC patients who underwent total thyroidectomy between 2004 and 2019 in the SEER database...

Deep-learning approaches with data augmentation have been widely used when developing neuroimaging-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. To prevent the inflated diagnostic performance caused by data leakage, a correct cross-validation (CV) method should be employed, but this has been still overlooked in recent deep-learning-based CAD studies. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of correct and incorrect CV methods on the diagnostic performance of deep-learning-based CAD systems after data augmentation...

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S): Differentiated thyroid cancer is a diverse disease, with histopathologic characteristics contributing to prognosis and treatment decisions. Tall cell variant of papillary thyroid cancer (TCV-PTC) carries a poor prognosis relative to other histologies, with first site of failure most often in the neck. Several small studies suggest there may be a disease control benefit to adjuvant external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for certain high-risk DTC populations; however, data is limited...

Chagas disease is a widespread neglected disease in Latin America. Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of the disease, is currently subdivided into six DTUs (discrete typing units) named TcI-TcVI, and although no clear association has been found between parasite genetics and different clinical outcomes of the disease or different transmission cycles, genetic characterization of T. cruzi strains remains crucial for integrated epidemiological studies. Numerous markers have been used for this purpose, although without consensus...

BACKGROUND: To date, no studies have identified an optimal metric to match donor-recipient (D-R) pairs in pediatric heart transplantation (HT). OBJECTIVES: The study sought to identify size mismatch metrics that predicted graft survival post-HT. METHODS: D-R pairs undergoing HT in Pediatric Heart Transplant Society database from 1993 to 2021 were included. Effects of size mismatch by height, weight, body mass index, body surface area, predicted heart mass, and total cardiac volume (TCV) on 1- and 5-year graft survival and morbidity outcomes (rejection and cardiac allograft vasculopathy) were evaluated...

PURPOSE: Tunneled central venous catheters (TCVs) are commonly used for pediatric chemotherapy. Recently, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) have been used instead. Although PICC has the advantages of simpler insertion and fewer severe complications, there is little information on the efficacy of PICC compared to TCV in pediatric chemotherapy.
